So a couple of weeks on I am really hooked to this new news site, more so this afternoon with all the commotion in Tottenham Court road, it's so useful and easier to use then sky. Do miss the full programme though.
It's possibly the best thing about ITV.com. However as you mentioned there are still some things they could improve, namely overhauling and integrating Weather into the site, improving the top navigation and including the ability to watch full bulletins. I'd also like it if we could have a hybrid feed that incorporates national news with news from your region.
Made by Many called it a minimum viable product and said changes according to visitor feedback would be implemented, so hopefully we'll see some tweaks. I'd love to know how the site is doing from an analytics perspective.
Crucially ITV need to work on a similar site for ITV Sport; I'd like to see the same design as ITV News' site. Similarly, ITV Player needs a ground-up revamp with the top priority being a viable
alternative
to linear TV, as iPlayer is. This can incorperate the planned pay models, too, so viewers can store/download/access content that has expired out of the 30 day window and/or remove advertising. Overall, we're talking higher quality streams (including HD for HD shows), the ability to watch live within ITV Player (rather than through itv.com/itv1) and improved navigation/discovery.
ITV would do well to also integrate social more tightly with its online stuff, perhaps offering an ITV account that works site-wide and allows easy connectivity to Facebook and Twitter so as to allow viewers to 'like' or 'follow' shows, set up a system of favourites on ITV Player and tailor the site on a regional basis.
By personalising and refining the user experience of key sites, like ITV Player, Sport and Weather, ITV will be preparing itself much better for a future that does not rely so heavily on traditional TV sets. The trends are already evident, and ITV needs to be leading the way in innovating to stay ahead of the game.
I'm hoping for some large-scale improvements to ITV.com by the time the network rebrands this year.
