New ITV Player launches with pay mechanism (January 2006)

The sites next main priority is most likely to be micro-payments, they are already behind a
planned schedule and I read somewhere that the ITV Player needs to be brought up to scratch to roll out the whole micro-payment system.

I'm not saying for a business, it's a bad idea. But how many people on here would pay for programmes on the ITV Player?

I wouldn't, not unless they offer a revolutionary product which would change my viewing habits.

You'd hope that for the fee, a minimum of being ad free would be in place.

I just don't see how they can push into the pay to view market without massive programming appealing to a young audience (who I presume would be most likely to use such a service), and especially in the current climate & with the competition not asking for payment (albeit with the BBC & Sky receiving payment through the license fee & services provided).

The only bit of information that I have been able to find is that the new site looks amazing on a Nokia Lumia, that is according to a tweet by Julian March who is head of ITV digital.

Another tweet says that the site will launch within the next two weeks, but the fact that is launching in mid-March could be a guess.

I'll try and search the web tomorrow for more. Smile

How long has the CITV website been integrated with itv.com? It's taken on the standard header etc. I haven't seen any comment about it here, unless I missed it.

It's a bit simple for kids IMHO, although some of the (limited) show pages are an improvement.

I like the fact that they have got vaster amounts of content for sites but there simply are not enough shows. There is also a lack of interactivity and fun design elements which really a children's channel site should contain. But then again who actually visits CITV's website?

As regard to the new ITV News site @mazi posted, "Had sneak preview of the new ITV news site, impressive. Thx& look forward to launch @JulianMarch". The team are obviously still in the states at SWSX so I wouldn't imagine a launch until at least next week, would be nice if they could launch in time for Wednesday. Would be interesting to see how they deal with live events like the budget.

The website along with the channels design is a aimed a lot younger than it used to be, even through the 2006 red era. There isn't much to distinguish the current branding from mini CITV, something that the blue & red did well.
The output including website must run on a tiny budget, especially as on tv, the same
Announcements are heard all of the time.

It's a shame that the branding has become this, especially after the late 90's, more so early noughties of big impressive presentation & amazing website updated daily with forums. I suppose the same has happened across the board for children's channels & presentation, it's a shame that the nearly 30 year old brand has suffered.

What do we know about the new News site so far?

Struggling to find anything online.

"Adam Crozier, ITV chief executive, said: "Online, we have a lot of work to do. It's very clear that we've fallen behind. We have a six-point plan to improve our online position and we need to get fit for purpose.

"We've got a pretty much completely new team managing digital, video-on-demand and YouView. We want to improve the ITV Player and give a wider distribution to our free ITV player, and we’re investing in the technology and systems."

Last year, the broadcaster announced plans to expand ITV Player to PS3 and Freesat. Crozier said: "We will hopefully see ITV Player on mobile phones and tablets shortly, and on more TV and games consoles."

He confirmed plans for a paid-for ITV Player and said ITV.com will relaunch with a new design and better navigation and content. The first step will be the trialling of paying mechanisms for content online this year.

In addition, Crozier said ITV News' presence online needed to improve."

From an old article.

So are we expecting a full ITV.com relaunch? If so, the News site could be a sort of preview of what to expect later in the year.
