I happened upon this site a couple of weeks ago. Put simply, there's a few TV themes in a Flash player, and an offer for the full MP3s (if you make them a donation).

I don't recognise that version of the Blockbusters theme - it sounds very American to me, but all the others seem to be the theme tunes used when the shows were transmitted in the UK.

Is anyone able to shed any light on this?

I might be wrong, but didn't they revamp the theme slightly when the show got moved to Sky One in the mid-90s? (With Bob Holness, not the Lisa Tarbuck version)

As far as I know, there were three theme tune changes.

The show started in 1983 (?). Around 1987, the theme tune was slightly revised to go with the new titles - the pitch wasn't changed, but the tempo was increased by around three seconds. A few years later, the theme was more heavily revised, having been upgraded to stereo and with reverberation on the bassline.

As far as I know, the Sky One version used a different version of the theme tune from a KPM library CD, which sounded more 'Yamaha MIDI porta-synth'.

Maybe this was used on Lisa Tarbuck's version? Do any recordings exist on the Internet of this version of the show?

edit : AFAIK, the themes I've talked about are lurking around somewhere on Private Parts.

The Lisa Tarbuck version is file number 3187 (won't post here as it's a library track). If anyone has video footage of that version, I'd be grateful.

Your wish is my command! Very Happy I found a couple of episodes from the Liza Tarbuck episodes in 2000 on Sky One with opening and closing credits. Will upload them soon once my new laptop is set up properly. Very Happy

I wouldn't be surprised if that was an unofficial version of the blockbusters theme from a compilation CD, it has that kind of sound to it.

Ben is absolutely right. I recognised it straight away - the version on that fuggled site is taken from the "ITV Themes" compilation, on the old original Pickwick records label from 1988. ITV commisioned the London Symphony Orchestra (or somesuch) to re-record orchestral versions of all its most popular theme tunes. This version of Blockbusters was actually in medley with a few others (can't remember what at this moment) - but this version was never broadcast on the programme!

EDIT: The irony is that the original Pickwick company was sold to Carlton in the mid-1990s, and so now (whether they realise or not), that recording is now owned by ITV plc Laughing

Gawd help them... but don't tell them.... they'll probably start using it! Laughing
