It's the right move although too little, too late IMO

I’ve logged in for the first time in ages and I have to say the site is almost unusable these days. The sponsored posts and ads makes it look like a clickbaiter’s dream.

That place turned into a toxic cesspit several years ago. My banning was a blessing. It was only a matter of time before something was done as the moderation was way-off skew favouring certain members allowing them to run amok. Good riddance.

What are you on about Asa? I'd definitely like to go to a read-only forum! Spouting my political nonsense into a void where nobody can hear me, bliss!

There's already a place like that... it's called Twitter. Wink Wink

Before Twitter came along the closest alternative was probably writing pompous letters to The Times, because if they didn't pick your letter to be published the only void it would ever see was the bottom of a postbag, probably followed three days later by a one way trip into a shredder.

Does anyone remember the network of sites which eventually formed together to become Digital Spy?

I really liked it back then and probably for the 10 or so year after the merger because there wasn't anywhere near as much fluff on it as there is now.

I must admit I haven't been on the DS forum since trolling breaking news that Shane Ritchie had died on the set of EastEnders. It was fun for about an hour and then I was found out.

Trolling used to be so much fun - yeah there were times when people used to make insulting statements but it was more about the wind-up.

Yes, although I only got the internet a few months before the Digital Spy forum was formed, for those few months I had been visiting one of the predecessor message boards, the ONfaq forum. When DS launched, their successor ONdigital message board was one of the main parts of the forums - it's still there as the Freeview forum but has since been shoved much further down the page in favour of more of the 'fluff' boards.

These days I mainly visit for the radio forum simply because if you want to talk about radio, as far as I can see it's really the only active place to do so.

Looks like the lock has been fastened... didn't take long between them announing it and doing it. I thought we would have had a few more days at least, not just announce and then pull down the shutters barely 24 hours later.

They’ve even deleted the thread that was discussing the changes, so people don’t even have chance to discuss alternative arrangements

The thread IS still there, though I wonder if the negative reaction had something to do with why they shut everything so quickly:

It's all been done so quickly that many people won't even have visited the forum between the announcement and closure, so the first they'll know is when they log on and find they can't post on those forums any more. I admit it all feels a bit rushed and unprofessional. Some of us have been there for 20 years for it to just end so abruptly and unceremoniously. They could have been like TV Forum and given us several weeks notice.

Would be typical digital spy to shut something down because of the negative reception.

It’s such a shame all in all that Support constantly let down the users.

Maybe you should change your username to ihateDS1? Wink

They've even closed down the threads people have tried to start in advice about discussing coronavirus. Seems incredibly ridiculous they don't even want people to try and discuss it in there or at least try and get advice on it. At the very least there should be a place for that on the forums right now, being such an important issue, as long as the toxic arguments about the lifting of restrictions (from both sides of the debate) and the likes are avoided.
