In this case, the 'tutor at college' are wrong. Web 2.0 is an unofficial term to describe web services that embed interactive video <snip>

Or an excuse for big businesses to catch up on what other firms are doing when they realise they've been left behind ...

Web 2.0 is a load of rubbish - don't be fooled.

It's not a load of rubbish. It's a philosophy web developers use to create a better website FOR the visitor.
As an occasional webdeveloper myself I can see the benifits in Web 2.0 - it's not just about content, also the way it's coded.

For example - this forum uses table's for its layout - they shouldn't, tables are strictly for data, for example organising the posts is an appropriate use of tables, but positiioning the logo isn't. They should use CSS and XHTML.

So don't go off on one moaning about something which has revolotionised the internet... Youtube, MySpace, Flickr are all results of the Web 2.0 philosophy.

No - those website were created BEFORE Web 2.0 was ever mentioned by some management cronie somewhere. There is no reason for this website not to use tables. It works, doesn't it? The page displays, and you can use it, doesn't it? So why start tarting around with something that doesn't need redesigning for the sake of being part of the "Web 2.0 revolution"? I'll tell you why - to make money! Web designers everywhere are making a fat pile of cash from nieve people who believe their website needs to be redesigned because of some "philosophical remake of the internet".

FlickR - online picture galleries have been around since Mosiac.
YouTube - online video has been around since Real Player v1
MySpace - Combination of ideas that started with 'build your own website' applications.

I'm not knocking those sites - but my point is the ideas for them have been around for years. It's just clever marketing makes you believe they are something new when they are not.

And that's coming from someone who works full time on the interweb, and has done for many, many years.

Digital Spy's my homepage

My God.

I didn't realise that there was anyone in the world who was that sad.
Beg pardon? What on earth would make me having Digital Spy as the first website I see when I launch my internet browser make me "sad"? I find the site very useful and I use the forums a lot, so why not have it as my homepage? Would you like me to change it? I would just hate to hurt someone's feelings. I'm sure I care about what you think, so give me a suggestion. A search engine perhaps? Well I must say, I don't require such a tool each time I log on. But since I must keep up my reputation of not being "sad", I'll change it to that, just for you. Because your opinion means so much to me. Thank you so much for the advice. It's so great to receive such constructive criticism.

That has nothing to do with web 2.0

Also the current design of this website and the software it uses it old and crumbling. There is a new thing in the works which apparently will be ready at some point this year.

Web 2.0 is about user-content and ajax apps. Not CSS positioning. Fool.

Even then it's a buzzword applied to crap.

May I ask what's wrong with tables? They do the job, and IMO there's nothing wrong with using them. If a paperclip can have multiple uses, a table can.

Table's are fine - but are not designed for layouts, simple as. They do the job but just weren't designed for it.

And to the person saying it's not about CSS it infact is, Web 2.0 "applications" rely on CSS and AJAX specifcally - Web 2.0 probably wouldn't be possible without these technologies. For example - new drag and drop on pages like iGoogle or Windows Live Hotmail.

Don't take it so personally, I'm sure Mr Nick didn't mean any harm Wink Traditionally a very low opinion is held of DS on TVF and Metropol, so any association with it is likely to draw derision.

not in the way you described. You wanted a simple php driven message board site to use CSS for a bit of decoration and seem to think that would make it web 2.0

All this AJAX has made me drag and drop too many times, so much so it f**ks me off now. I don't want to have to "learn" what to do every time I visit a web-site - I haven't got time to piss about re-arranging things to make it look pretty.

Surely not everything in life has to be a free-for-all pinboard-esque type of graffiti ridden filth.
