Hopefully this Sign in will herald Store Purchases on the iPlayer on Connected TV at last. The sign in tests on YouView worked well I suspect the AppleTV update a few days ago also had sign-in but that's currently cloaked.
Worth noting that France Télévisions have relaunched their catch-up service which also requires a sign in. They require date of birth, email and postcode.
I wonder what the reason is behind that page being hosted on the BBC.com domain and whether it's caused any confusion from people thinking it's trying to spoof the .co.uk site?
They say this is to do with signing you in on both .com and .co.uk.
This is more important than in the past as sites such as Future and Capital are now available in the UK.
Wonder when the BBC plan to update the weather website to a responsive layout, as presumably they intend to keep that site despite cutbacks. Looking at the mobile weather site though it's using a responsive layout it hasn't been updated in ages.
I think it's a shame that the BBC Weather website has never been more 'fleshed out' as it were. I remember the beta which had the Ferris wheel image in the background gently swaying, and how every weather condition would have a different background image - in the end I think we ended up with a grey clouds image and the aforementioned Ferris wheel!
iPlayer compulsory sign in could launch tomorrow ..... Personal speculation as Store purchase access due to be revoked tomorrow. Two changes together would seem reasonable.
Compulsory sign-in for iPlayer didn't appear to launch today but I spotted that you will only need to sign in for certain parts of it - its not a total blanket requirement. CBBC and CBeebies appear both to be exempt.
I suspect the TV non requirement to be temporary whilst manufacturers cooperate or not. YouView already incorporates it satisfactorily for it's programme portability, next programme and recommendations functions, only one more step to incorporate for access. The recent new iPlayer payload on AppleTV has been reported to be ready too,
Give it the usual cycle and manufacturers will need to amend or lose the service.
I suppose it could also depend on your definition of watching iPlayer via TV - such as via a built-in App on a Smart TV, YouView, Sky, Virgin, TalkTalk, BT, console, etc. Could get a bit messy if sign-in is enforced that way.
