Wimbledon HD HTTP Streaming Trial

I'm Andy Armstrong, technical architect for Programmes and On Demand here at the BBC. We investigate new technologies for online video and audio delivery looking for ways to enhance existing services, provide new services and streamline the way we handle media content on the internet.

Important sporting events like Wimbledon are great opportunities for us to test new technologies. This year we're testing a number of things including high definition HTTP adaptive bit rate video streaming.

Great, I was thinking that, of course, the BBC stream all channels apart from HD, so perhaps this could lead to live streams of BBC One HD and BBC HD channels. Wimbledon get live HD streaming and 3D this year! Very lucky!!

Very good on first examination, the adaptive transmission rate moved effortlessly up to HD standard in under 20 seconds on my connection, still picture elements detailed as expected, movement however still somewhat jerky.

Some more work required.

Yeah it sort of frozze for me at certain times then it looked reasonably 720p HD.

Regions should be in the pipeline too, I think.

It's hugely encouraging, that unlike so many BBC Blogs, that there's a genuine two way communication exercise on the one related to this test. If only the other Blog writers would follow suit.

Yeah, I figured that if people were kind enough to help with the trial I should do them the honour of answering their questions.

I'll try to get a follow up post out next week with a brief report on how the trial went.
