How long have the new look alerts been about, with sound effects etc and a BBC World Style dog in the bottom of the screen?

That has been around for ages. A few months after the channel relaunched if I'm not mistaken. It's useless though. It breaks stories on your desktop about 4 hours after they break. In some cases it doesn't do nothing. Mine hasn't made a tinker of a sound for weeks.

Works fine for me, and generally breaks news within a few minutes of it appearing on TV.

Does anyone know if such software is available for Macs?

I'm sure there was a link a while ago to an "and if you are on mac" version
