Would it be possible to do something about the speed of the adverts on here? I'm not sure whether it has to do with the DDOS attack that Doubleclick had the other day but every single page now freezes while the advert loads before the rest of the page appears. It's really infuriating.

Would it be possible to put them onto the site in a different way or turn them off until either Doubleclick or Advivia speed up?

I do belive you are missing a D.

I don't see any ads, using Firefox and Norton something that blocks them, all of TVF loads fine for me, when I let the ads appear. Although Asa do you actually make much/any money form them? I know I've never l clicked them, they just get in the way of that lovely blue. Perhaps they could be banished. Or do what some forums do and make them appear only when you are not logged in. Just an idea.

I do believe you're right.

I'm one of those poeple who leave adverts as occasionally you see a gem of one (those BT Yahoo ones at the moment for example).

Google ads supposedly are less annoying (true) and apparently make the webmaster more money, have you considered using those?

Also, can the adverts on here be sound-free? It's a bit annoying when I'm listening to a CD and suddenly sound from the adverts comes on and ruins the track....

Please, can we ditch the flash adverts with music and pointless animation.

I found my computer was a bit iffy the other day as everything took a long time to respond - and guess what - it was one of those bloody stupid animated flash ads causing the problem! Evil or Very Mad

Maybe not noticeable on the latest computers, but please spare a thought for those of us who don't have the latest 3GHz processors.

And no, I'm not going to change my browser, my ISP or firewall

Seconded, gif/jpeg only no flash ones. They take longer to load and are twice as annoying (when sometimes they get past norton) Please.

They are run by a company called "Adviva" and as far as i know they give you so much money per month depending on how many people use your website etc.

The adverts must be giving the forum a lot of money, considering the amount of pepole that visit the forum.

Well probably not really - generally you get paid on a "click through" basis - every time somebody clicks an ad Asa will be paid something between 1 and 5 pence.

Sometimes you can earn comission with things such as tesco.com - you can earn 10% of a visitor's first online shopping trip.

But all in all they won't earn much.

Sorry for the problems everyone. Which ads have sounds? Are they still running? If they are, I'll get in contact with the company and ask for those to be removed - I appreciate how annoying they can be.

I must admit I've never had a problem with them freezing the page - the page often loads first with white space in its place before the ad eventually turns up.

As to their existence, they've been a nice little help along with my contribution each year to the hosting. The site guzzles bandwidth and I'd certainly remove them if it really wasn't worth anything - it's not my intention to frustrate visitors!

I haven't noticed one with sound in a while.

I think it's the way Firefox loads javascript things in pages actually, I've noticed it happening on el reg too.

Would it not be possible to put the advert in an absolutely positioned <div> and then stick it at the end of the HTML?
