It simply doesn't pass the 'would people say it in casual conversation' test though, therefore this new name is not fit for purpose.

Neither does "oh we'll just watch it on 4OD instead", unless you know what 4OD means and are used to hearing it - it can't pass the casual conversation test until it's been in casual use for a notable amount of time. 20 years ago Google wouldn't be a name fit for purpose under your test.

I don't agree the vast majority of the people who'll be impacted by the change will be those comfortable saying 4OD and know what it means. For those who don't care about on demand services then their lives will continue as normal.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say, but if it's you think that that all4 doesn't pass the casual conversation test because people are used to saying 4OD , then that's entirely my point. You can't say the new name is rubbish simply because nobody would say it today in preference to the old name, because nobody knows the new name or is trying to use it in casual conversation.

Just like any brand name, it won't be used in casual conversation until people are talking about it casually, which is never just after the brand launch.

But the reason 4OD can be used in casual conversation is because when you talk to someone who used on demand services they know what you're talking about. I'm sure those who don't could take a guess at it being something to do with what it is too. The brand "all4" has absolutely no association with what it is. The whole musketeers reference someone said is a bad thing IMO, if you go "I'll catch it on all 4" it just doesn't sound as though the sentence is complete. It's clear you don't agree but I personally don't think it's a wise move to ditch this well established name/brand etc.

Really? Prior to 4OD becoming popular, "OD" was used more in conjunction with drug use than video catch-up services.

So what you're saying is the new name's rubbish because it's not the old one.

Right. Let's not have any new brand names or companies ever again.

Actually, I agree that it's a bad move to ditch an established brand. I just don't agree with this "you wouldn't use 'all4' in a conversation like you would '4OD'", because it's patently nonsense.

Or maybe people aren't as f***ing thick as you seem to think they are and will just get it and carry on with their lives? I don't understand the OTT hysteria....it makes sense to me. 4, E4, Film4, More4, 4Music and All4. It's seems like a more natural fit for the portfolio to me than the rather bland, generic and increasingly outdated "4OD".

Edit: My post was in response to declan not dosxuk.

I think the point he is trying to make is that 4oD doesn't sound syntactically odd - it's hard to make a sentence where you could misconstrue it, you'd just not understand the initialism.

All4 could cause a small level of confusion, but I think it works in its favour - to get people talking about it; they might even play on it themselves.

This is something I'd never noticed before; I imagine it was chosen on purpose going by their history of wordplay with "four".

It's not about people being thick. It's about them not being bothered enough to notice. All 4 doesn't really denote video in the way the other players do, it doesn't really role off the tongue and it seems like a long term solution to made up non-existent problem. Going back to dosxuk's post I think 4OD stands becuase it sounds distinctive and that's why it's memerable and more so than ITV's service which I imagine people might assume is just called ITV iPlayer or they might just say on 'Catch Up'.

All 4 is a bit generic and doesn't really sound like a video service.

Exactly Jon - as far as catch up services are concerned it's iPlayer, 4oD and that's about it. ITV Player and Demand 5 aren't in the conciousness as much, while Sky seem to always be rebranding theres. It's just a stupid move for the sake of it - everything they're planning to do could easily be done under the 4oD brand, and indeed most of it already is.

When using on demand services I don't use any of the "proper" names, I just say catch up. Naughty me Sad

I can imagine majority of people being the same outside of anorak circles.

I'd wager that most non-technical people would say iPlayer. Mary Berry mentioned it in a recent interview, and it tripped off her tongue just as easily as "soggy bottom". My parents say it despite having barely ever used it, to my knowledge.

Yes I've heard iPlayer and 4oD used by plenty of commoners and other lesser peoples in everyday conversation, iPlayer especially.

I use 4OD all the time, a great resource. Hopefully the re-branding won't negatively affect the archive TV programme service.
