I've got two concerns about upgrading to Windows 10, it's a great idea and I'll definitely do it if I can be sure on a few things!

When I upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium, will I have to move all my files to an external storage device and will all my paid software be removed, e.g. Office and AVG?

Nope, you should be ok - the transition from 8.1 to 10 has been seemless, and I'm sure that Microsoft will make sure that the same is the case when upgrading from 7.

Okay, thanks for your help!

Microsoft have decided to go down the constant update route for Windows 10, according to BBC News

Quote:
Windows 10 is going to be the last major revision of the operating system.
Jerry Nixon, a Microsoft development executive, said in a conference speech this week that Windows 10 would be the "last version" of the dominant desktop software.
His comments were echoed by Microsoft which said it would update Windows in future in an "ongoing manner".
Instead of new stand-alone versions, Windows 10 would be improved in regular instalments, the firm said.

For me, it's a welcome decision. It also means, for companies, no more having to discount hardware just because it comes with an old version of Windows.

As long as you don't run things like Windows Media Center that is. (It was standard in Win 7 Home Premium, an optional upgrade to Win 8 Pro, and is being pulled entirely in Windows 10)

Apparently "Free" Windows 10 has a high cost and will turn into a subscription...

If this happens, I'm switching to Linux.

That article is pretty speculative:

Right now we don’t know
Quite frankly we don’t know

And there are no numbers given to this "high cost."

I wouldn't be surprised if they consider launching a 'Windows 365' subscription edition similar to how they've done with Office. However I'd still expect a non-subscription Windows edition(s) to be available, not least because of all the business & corporate customers. As already pointed out that article appears to be based more on speculation than facts.

In the mobile, tablet and laptop space they'll need a free option to compete with Apple and Google. (Which is where Windows 8.1 with Bing fits in currently)

If it's a case of having to pay for Windows = you going to Linux, why haven't you done so already? Confused

A Windows logo in my notification area alerted me to the impending launch - I didn't expect it this early.

They must be on a hell of a development schedule for it to have a stable release for the end of July. It's still very buggy at the moment.

I haven't bothered installing any of the preview releases, so I've no idea how it'll run on my machine. However, I will expect it will run better, simply because Windows 8.1 has always been slightly problematic on my laptop (on the Modern UI side of things).

I should say that my laptop came with Windows 8, and it ran well at first - a few attempts at repairing my installation after it refusing to start up seemed to cause the issues I still have now. I've not bothered fixing it because only things I have little use for stopped working.

In general, I think that the worst issues will be solved - 2 months is longer than it seems at first. However, there may be more bugs than with previous versions of Windows, because of the current attitude towards releasing programs with bugs still present being much more relaxed.
