Joint BBC / ITV (and others?) Announcement due before the end of the month
ITV confirmed they will launch an SVoD platform with the BBC (announcement later this month), showing ‘Best of British’ content. This supports ITV’s ‘more than TV’ strategy. When this is announced, it must have specifically loaded top quality versions loaded onto it. BBC Store fell foul of selling off air streams which grated with those who forked out for it. It must be ALL HD with some UHD from the start. There’s no excuse for anything other. Price? No more than £5.99 per month unless it carries everything from everywhere. Loads of questions which I understand should become clearer on 27 Feb 2019.
Maybe once the BBC and Discovery finish the UKTV break-up, the UKTV name could be repurposed for this? It would kind of be a closed circle, as UK Gold started out as a partnership of the BBC and Thames, the latter of course being a former ITV franchisee.
The name seems fine to me. Given that they already have some traction in US & Canada and the ambition must be to become a global brand you don't want to detract from that by creating a different brand for different territories.
I think this further shows that the BBC as we know it currently wont exist past the end of the charter.
