To give the Fire Stick some credit, for general viewing with Kodi, it does the job. I've used it with the Zattoo add-ons and the streaming quality is excellent using Kodi's built in 'dvdplayer' software and in my personal opinion performs better than the LG Smart TV app.

Netflix is reasonable via the stick, but I prefer to use my Smart TV which has an Ethernet connection.


Last time I checked the Fire TV stick didn't do refresh rate switching and was dreadful with interlaced content. I tried it with Kodi briefly and then gave it to a family member for iPlayer and Netflix duties...

The Kodi team are less worried about people selling stuff with a clean Kodi install on it, than they are about people selling devices with streaming add-ones that use pirated content, and calling that 'Kodi Fully Loaded' etc...

Blatant rip-off merchants. They are using the Kodi trademark though - so hopefully the Kodi team will hit them with a cease and desist.

Whilst Kodi is Open Source and GPL3 (I think) licensed, meaning anyone can redistribute it, sell it commercially, and modify it (if they provide their sources to buyers) - the Kodi name itself is a trademark.

If you want to do what KodiDirect are doing (breaking the law if they are based in the UK - as recently police have started to raid suppliers of this kind of product) you have to remove all traces of the Kodi brand.

Checkout the Kodi forums for box recommendations. There are probably better boxes than the Zidoo.

Probably, but none of them have an old-school LCD clock! It's on its way now anyway, so I will report back on Monday.

The reviews for the Zidoo X9 on Amazon are positive, unlike the cheaper Android streamers.

As are a pile of YouTube vids I've seen on it, it's good to actually view it in action.


EDIT. Incidentally I haven't retired the WDTV completely, it is now connected to our bedroom TV and closer to the router, and the performance seems a little better. Range must be an issue there....even using the wifi extender it was laggy. 2.4Ghz only though...
