Check your output settings: Press Services -> Right to Settings -> HD Resolution Output. You can set this to Auto for switching between 4:3 and 16:9/HD or leave it on 1080i which will upscale everything...

The DVD recorder which I used to record was also a Freeview receiver so I'd often record programmes from Freeview on to DVD. That recorder I no longer have as it stopped working a few years later.

There are lots of cheap knock-offs around. They are fine for just controlling a Sky+ box, but they aren't as well made, and don't all have the same database for TV control.
