BT TV full launch

I know it took ages to get to proper HD on NOW TV but have heard a reasonably credable comment today that indicates that SKY 4K content may be incoming in 2021.

Was this for on-demand or the live streams?

If 4k comes to NowTV in any form, that'll automatically put it second fiddle in the Sky line-up without question, since its probably safe to assume by now Sky+HD either doesn't support 4k from a hardware point of view or its a deliberate omission from the options, although since all that hardware is no newer than 2014 I think it was, probably more likely the hardware doesn't support it.

Next question has to be much closer they'll let Now get to Q down the line. It'll always play second fiddle to Q, that's a given.

No information about what content would be offered, suggestion was that some 'testing' was in process with a commercial offering likely next year if it was successful. I suspect the issue is that BT, a tenant on the Sky operated platform, is offering 4K, and as a result NOW need to replicate that offering rapidly.

I had an update on the NowTV box the other night and there's an entire new homepage that's come up for the NowTV content which now launches by default. Previously you'd be stuck at the Roku style homepage with the settings and list of apps. This new NowTV app seems to have its own screensaver which is full screen images of forthcoming/other content separate from the bouncing NowTV logo one. Entire experience seems a bit more integrated. Very boxy, very reminiscent of Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+. Sideways scrolling must be a big thing these days.

I tested the new interface before it was launched. It does look a lot more professional and I like how they have hotlinked to certain shows on other apps including iPlayer and My5. Luckily the Streaming Stick and the 4K Box remotes have the TV Guide button, so you can still get to the live streams as fast as possible.

The only negative is that because the new home page bypasses the old Roku style app page, it's slightly slower than before.

Another downside is the light on the front of the box (at least the earlier black box) now takes ages to go out as its within the now tv app and that seems to have different power saving settings to the native ROKU OS home screen. normally it used to go out after about 5 mins on the old homepage. Hopefully this gets fixed in a later update, with the box in the bedroom its quite bright at night.

Apparently it can take up to four hours for the 4K box to go into standby. The trick is to not leave the box on the home page, for example leave it on the app store page and the old style Now TV screen saver appears and the light goes off in 5 mins.

NOW TV also have their own screensaver loop promoting tv shows which may be the reason why the box doesn't go into standby straightaway?

The original white NOW TV box is being retired in early October 2020. Users are being advised that it will no longer get updates from then. A 'discounted' Stick is being offered to users at £9.99 to enable continued access to the service.

Some Sports catchup has appeared on mobile devices this week. No news about an extension to Connected Devices and crucially what quality of output will be offered to these users.

EDIT

If you start watching Catch-Up sport on a mobile device and then stop, the Content is reflected in the Continued Watching section of the NOW TV Player on the NOWTV boxes. It is then accessable via the player via the appropriate tile. Looks as though it's not been boosted though.

Sports catch-up officially announced. (odd capitalization of 'action' there Very Happy)

Can't see it on the main menu on the Youview app... but content does appear in search. Still doesn't appear to be boosted.

Looks like a 7-day catchup window (at least on the F1)

Any sign of a season ticket for Sky Sports yet?
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

Ouch. Will be interesting to see how BT react, given they lock their TV subscribers into a 24 month contract.

Their current base packages are:
Entertainment - £10pm (£1 more expensive than current NowTV pass)
Entertainment+Cinema - £20pm (£1 cheaper than current pass)
Sport - £40pm... £15 for BT Sport; £25 for Sky Sports (£9 cheaper than current month pass, ignoring BT Sport)
Entertainment+Cinema+Sport+HD - £60 (£13 cheaper than the current equivalent passes, ignoring BT Sport)

Some good value there already if one is willing to lock-in, but I suspect their Entertainment+Cinema pricing will need to increase. I suspect the £9 difference in Sport is them overpricing BT Sport rather than under-pricing Sky Sports.

Bolt-on passes are at the usual NowTV prices, so I expect these will rise to match the new prices.

Just to follow on from this... BT's prices did change at some point in the last month - the Entertainment packs have both increase by £2, making them more expensive than the comparable NowTV passes. VIP increased by £5.

Not to mention the additional 3.9% + CPI at the end of March going forward for new and recontracting customers. Shocked Previously, TV was not subject to any annual increase, and broadband/landline was just subject to the CPI, which was fairly reasonable. Trying to justify a 3.9% increase as to cover the increased running costs is a bit of a stretch...
