Sky need to look at themselves square in the face, watching BT Sport on the NOW TV App in 4K it's gorgeous, showing up all the negatives of Sky Sports on NOW TV, even more galling is that this is a Sky platform I'm watching on.

They can't make NowTV too good - they need to be able to charge more for SkyQ still. Introducing 50fps streams has made that trickier. BT Sport is different as it's platform agnostic?

If I recall, the BT Sport app used is a NOW TV exclusive? I don't think it's on Roku branded devices.

Indeed. BT's model nowadays is to sell as many subscriptions as possible, by providing their service on every platform they can reasonably support.

Even NowTV via BT TV (which is ultimately a service encoded and distributed by BT themselves) is better than regular NowTV, as it has 50fps for all the channels instead of just the handful of Sports ones.

Does Now TV on BT require a separate app or are the channels accessed through the regular BTTV EPG? I’ve always assumed it was the latter.

If you subscribe via BT, then yes - they are regular channels through BT TV's guide on the Youview box. They are effectively broadcast channels, and can be paused/recorded as such.

Regular Now TV subscribers can still watch on Youview via the separate app, but these are the same streams as used on other devices.

Do BT distribute them as multicast services like their own TV channels ? I guess if they are encoding them themselves they do - rather than streaming the OTT feeds as unicast?

Hi Noggin,

Can't confirm as I'm still on the Legacy Pack. I believe they are being multicast, but to the same specification as their own BTTV HD channels, not the enhanced specification that Sky insisted on for SS1 and SS2 HD when they were launched on the platform. So viewers on the legacy pack with the SSME bolt-on switching across to the NOWTV based new packs could well see a deterioration of some sort in that channel's quality. I'm using YV's NOWTV App tonight for SSPL to see what a prolonged watch on the platform via YV looks like.

The multiple platform choices available add to the mix in scheduling viewing now.

One would think that for efficiencies sake, SSME might use the same stream for both packages. I suppose it depends what the long-term plan is for handling legacy subscribers.

Is Sky Sports Extra still a channel on the legacy pack nowadays?

SS Extra still exists and will be used for the dual PL games later this week. SSME has two separate EPG numbers now, one for the Legacy version and the other for the NOWTV service as happens with all the content that is used across both products.

I know the channels on both packages have different EPG numbers. However, the underlying encoding and multicast stream may still be the same, given that there is a lot of duplication - especially in the Entertainment and Cinema channels.

Hard to tell without being able to take bitrate measurments on both packages.
