The Sport Thread

The new government advice is that as part of Phase 2 (which will commence no earlier than 1 June):
Quote:
"The current planning assumption for England is that the second step may include as many of the following measures as possible, consistent with the five tests. Organisations should prepare accordingly... [removed for clarity] Permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed-doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact."

Coronavirus - Impact on live/recorded shows

The 100,000 potentially infected cards were a great idea too. No way should he be considered for SPOTY.

He didn't open them, they were opened in a village hall or something similar and then he was shown them digitally...

I think it might be noticed when a fleet of OB vehicles and crew, let alone all of the other required staff, turns up at a football ground.

Sky... again

Hmm, I'm not sure that works well as an animate on with that zoom. Maybe try it without and see if that is perhaps slightly more aesthetically pleasing?

I quite like the zoom, to me the zoom emphasises that it's supposed to be a piece of glass, whereas without it it's just a coloured rectangle and I don't think it fits with the glass bar at the top either. And it's more inkeeping with the original graphic that inspired it.

Hmm yes, I think it looks nicer on that wide shot compared to on the MCU of Beth Rigby. I still prefer the non-zoomed version, but personal preference for certain!

Eurovision 2021 - Netherlands - NPO/AVROTROS/NOS

I don't know about 2019 though, but I wouldn't be surprised if KAN heavily relied on outside help considering it only came to be in 2017. Also since 2017 the local broadcasters logo was missing from the end credits and online branding. Maybe because of their limited involvement?

I know Christer Bjorkman and that Ola guy worked on it but Israel has one of the most advanced TV industries in the world so I would have thought it was many KAN. They certainly gave themselves enough namechecks during the show!

There were a LOT of imported production and crew. Madonna's interval act was directed by the main Melodifestivalen director (who shared directing duties of 2016's ESC with the staff director I mention above). Al Gurdon lit that element too.

AIUI there were largely Israeli HoDs - but with a lot of support...

A lot of support! Yeah, Robin Hofwander directed Madonna's interval act. Noticeably, Florian Wieder was the production designer but yes, largely the primary HoDs were Israeli.

One of the Steadicam operators and his focus puller were Swedish. Most of the engineering crew were from NEP Sweden since they provided the OB units, the senior vision supervisor was from the UK, OperTek provided specialist cameras and crew from Ukraine, Litecom lighting crews from Denmark, Pyroman SFX crews from Finland, etc. etc.

Sky... again

There is a 10% zoom, however that picture is technically inaccurate, I forgot to change the image behind the straps so... you're seeing Beth Rigby with Adam Boulton's body, and therefore that one appears quite a bit larger than the others.

Eurovision 2021 - Netherlands - NPO/AVROTROS/NOS

If anyone's interested in some behind the scenes of this contest, the Beeb's Naked Eurovision documentary is good. And it's on YouTube...

Sky... again

Great stuff, interesting to see! Would be nice to see your interpretation of 2/3-way boxes as well perhaps?

The ticker, and the live bugs, seem rather small compared to what is currently used on the channel. And the blue on the ident is very SSN, but I like it.

In terms of the election graphics, I think having the vertical strips on the straps doesn't work with the colours below them. Seems a little cluttered in my opinion. And having the turnout slightly below the top of the box with a tiny bit of colour above it doesn't look too pleasing.

Election 2010

How did they get the live pictures from Kirsty Wark on Nick Clegg's train to London?

Could something like LiveU. It was probably available then.

4G wasn't, that launched 2013, however the Beeb covered the Olympic torch procession around the UK using four bonded 3G carriers in 2012. Not sure that was possible in 2010?

BBC News definitely used LiveU's in 2010 for the US midterm elections, so a LiveU is certainly an option. The LiveU HD60 (which could support 14 uplinks and I think 12 of those could be 3G or 4G - 4G was available in other countries from ~2008 onwards) launched in April 2010.

I guess there are other sets semi-permanently rigged in there? Graham Norton's green screen and desk for example?

Surely Graham is doing that from home?

Yeah, it's not in TC1. Graham is recording from an "isolated place". https://www.procam.tv/news/case-studies/procam-helps-so-television-keep-the-cameras-rolling-remotely-on-the-graham-norton-show

Plus, how many millions were spent upgrading connectivity to the site ?

The connectivity at Elstree was still used for the 2019 GE. And it is also used for programming such as Children in Need, I believe.
