BBC Four to become archive channel (p15)

Just wondering out loud but any info out there on the budget for all of Sky's new channels and their entertainment slate in general? Would just be interesting to compare.

Approximately £700m across their entire entertainment slate and it is increasing due to Comcast investment (well, it was before CV). In excess of £6bn in total but a lot of that is for sport rights...

Gallery request - minimalist news graphics

The white areas of space at the bottom of both BBC News and Sky are a particular hate of mine.

Sorry, slightly off-topic... The white spaces at the bottom are for the safe area. What would you have instead?

The Sky News Thread

No silly thought, but a silly virus...

What?

I alluded to the probable case that there already had been a relaunch under ''normal circumstances''. If sources were understood correctly, the rebrand would have already happened (potentially on 4th May). It was planned that the Westminster studio gets a refresh (as alluded to in Kay Burley´s Instagram video in March) and to coincide with this and probably the new logo a rebrand would have very likely taken place. But then there was C.....

Yep. Millbank temporary set (basically just the desk from the GE coverage which came from Abingdon Green) was supposed to have been put into use whilst the new set was built, and I believe we should have been on the new set by now. Obviously none of that has happened (although the temporary set was put in before this all kicked off), since set building/rigging/lighting/camera tests/look-see/etc require crew and close proximity working...

Coronavirus - Impact on live/recorded shows

Doing it from home is likely to involve similar levels of resources, just shifted to different roles and places.

I was just thinking having staff close together in studio could have been a problem, since the host himself contracted COVID-19 and has since recovered and is back hosting, would have given an example of how it could be a problem if they continued hosting from the studio.

Obviously I don't know the production details in this case, but it is possible to have staff spread out in a studio & gallery. Spread the cameras out (probably need fewer since there aren't as many guests in the studio); have talent do their own makeup; have the director also doing the vision mixing; have the LD also doing the console operation (maybe from the studio floor so there's only the vision supervisor in the lighting gallery); sound supervisor also runs grams, etc etc.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

I read elsewhere that all of last week's WWTBAMs had no right channel audio !! ?

Did anyone notice ?

Yes.

Certainly, I noticed there was a lack of volume from my Dolby Surround Sound setup from the early 90's from the back speakers last week during the shows, especially the right side. I thought it was my Freeview box as if you turn it off/on, sometimes the surround sound is restored. However, this was not the case on WWTBAM, I checked other channels at the same time and the sound was normal. Definitely a lack of stereo sound during the programme all week.

What would have caused this, would this be a transmission issue or a technical problem that no-one was aware of at the time of recording?

Hard to say ! It's a worry (within the scope of technical standards) that it persisted all week on playout ! And actually it's also a worry if it was a production cock up.

It's very odd! If it was a studio issue then it would've been fixed in post (it is very rare that individual tracks are not ISO'd on pre-recorded shows nowadays), and if there was a post issue, then it would've surely failed compliance?

Channel 4

They seem to be everywhere this week - they've got a new Sky show as well.

The Sky show was supposed to be their pub-based, football-themed “Weekend Warm Up” which was postponed for obvious reasons and this was commissioned as a temporary replacement.

The Sport Thread

It seems to be quite difficult in the UK to make sports rights cover their costs on their own. Sky make it work because it's part of a bigger entertainment package, BT do it to sell broadband, and Amazon just want you to buy more stuff via their website. The likes of Setanta and Eleven have shown that it's not always easy to be a pure-play sport subscription service. I guess local market conditions are more favourable for DAZN elsewhere.

Indeed.

I agree that it would be challenging in the UK. Stand-alone services seem to struggle rather a lot here.

DAZN - The next snake in the grass for Premier League rights..

They already have rights to air it in Spain and Canada. It is interesting how they have no presence in the UK despite having been founded in London and their HQ is here I believe.

The Sky News Thread

I find it interesting that Sky News has the manpower and people to put into developing these "innovations" (Yet they cant turn a profit). The first full remotely produced broadcast (ok... Neutral ), SkyNews Raw (big whoop...), etc and all these other things. Yet for its "innovations" it all still comes off as its all been produced by a robot. Ehh. Whats the point. These last few years it always the same dull stuff they always do. Whoopty doo! Doesnt feel like the spunky lively channel it used it be. Sorry not sorry.

What sort of things do you think would make it more lively?
London Lite and Whataday gave kudos

Eurovision 2021 - Netherlands - NPO/AVROTROS/NOS

dvboy posted:
Is YouTube stream got Dutch commentary? How on earth would the BBC have a copy of that?

It's not from the BBC, it's from the EBU. Presumably the BBC only have a copy with their own commentary on it.

Presumably people were confused by the video description

"We are happy to announce that broadcaster BBC has made available the Eurovision Song Contest 1974!"

Which would be a rights-related statement, I imagine?

BBC Four to become archive channel (p15)

1.7. BBC Drama (including Eastenders)
1.8. BBC Comedies
1.9 BBC Documentaries (including history)
1.10 BBC Style (Homes Under The Hammer et al)

That would actually be pretty similar to what Sky is doing now with their genre channels. I can't see the BBC going down that route as it may just look like they're copying, but it's certainly an interesting theory.
