The Sky News Thread

Personally I don't agree with live coverage of trials in order to protect witnesses, and I do think in this case live coverage could inflame a fragile situation, especially as the nature of trials can often mean they are very one sided for a period and then flip to the other side of the argument.

Out of interest, some of today's witnesses will not appear on camera as they are underage.

The DOG seems to be duplicated at the moment. (Sky News HD - NowTV on BTTV)

During the pre-recorded documentary? That’s the norm for some reason.

Still don't understand why Sky Sports aren't using a small steadycam rig, or a gimble for the PSC cameras.
The argument was that a steadycam rig would take too much space in the pit lane, but with the broadcast media presentation mostly having to decamp to the paddock, there's now plenty of space to use one and stop the bouncy shots.

And (one for commseg) can you do the focus pulling on a steadycam remotely from the gallery/vision control in the scanner, to reduce the bodies in the paddock even further?

Just using handheld cameras gives them a wider pool of operators to draw from - and it’s less intensive than Steadicam or gimbal work for longer periods.
And yes, you can do longer distance remote focus pulling but it’s a bit of a faff. Many Steadicam ops can and do pull their own focus; you can get dual focus/zoom demands or a separate focus wheel which you clamp on the handle.
Here’s one example: https://www.g-zoom.com/shop/g-zoom-controller/g-zoom-custom-edition/

Indeed, here are a couple of before and after shots for comparison...

Now they've done that, maybe they can work on turning down the saturation... the orange-ness of the Palace of Westminster is just too much and looks awful in my opinion. I understand entirely it's meant to show it at 'sunrise', but it looks a bit silly at 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

I just wish they had a live shot to be honest. Surely it's not beyond the realms of possibility considering they seemingly have one for Ian King Live.

The IKL one is a pre-existing camera (used by CNBC as well I believe) mounted on the roof of the building the studio is in. For the Breakfast shot it would require a new camera and infrastructure installed - presumably they like this angle, so that would mean you'd need to mount a high-end camera (to get adequate resolution) on Lambeth Bridge, install power & fibre, and make it safe from idiots who want to be on TV.

Possible? Sure. Cost-effective? I highly doubt it - you'd have the situation where you have a foggy day or rainy day and you'd revert to the backup shot so why install a dedicated camera in the first place? Would you even get permission from TfL who own the bridge?

VERA, Logogen etc

I assume Valley meant a royal death. Diana died just before the Balloon look and the Queen Mother died just after Rhythm & Movement launched so if it was also intended for this purpose, it was never used in that fashion.

Even if it had happened during that time, they wouldn't have broadcast the National Anthem with the balloons! It would have been with the appropriate flag (and they were on tapes, kept ready in a safe location). They definately wouldn't have a button on the desk for something like that

Thanks! Interesting.

Guess who's got the one from NC1

Presumably the Anthem one was for certain "events"?

That is so much better. Was it not said the diffuser was mostly for the benefit of Kays 'soft news' show? Makes sense to get rid of it since she is away.

The diffuser is to stop moire effects caused by the pixels of the LED screen. Think the weird lines and circles you get if you try and take a picture with your phone close up of a computer monitor, except constantly moving.

The downside of the diffusion is that it also blurs light from the front, so when working close to the screen any light shone (or bounced) into the diffuser will be visible, reducing the contrast of the actual screen.

It may be that they've experimented and found that with the camera settings and distances they're actually using it's not as bad as they expected when the studio was designed, so have been able to remove them.

Correct - some positions for talent have been changed as a result of the diffusion removal. There are still moire issues but it is not terrible.

I do feel like a lot of these stories are leaked to the media in order to encourage competing (particularly pay-TV) broadcasters to up their bids.

I don't think there have been any rehearsals yet with new branding, only a few tests, so definitely not happening next week.
