What was the official reason for the BBC closing BBC CWR back in 1995
and how did it square with their decision to launch BBC CWR in the first place?

Were there any special shows marking the end of BBC CWR?

Trivia Question: Which was the first BBC VHF local radio station ever to be closed down,
and now that BBC CWR is being revived, the only one to stay closed down?

no idea about the close of cwr, but was the first station to be closed bbc surrey?

Bit of good news for those of you listening in C&W land.

Greg Dyke came to call & said, 'Hello my name is Greg Dyke, & I'm director general of the BBC ! Bring back BBC CWR ? Well alright then, but you're moving to a new building!'

(Well, seeing I don't live in CWR land, I can only guess at the conversation, but have a look hereBBC Coventry site )

Wonder how the interview ended?

'Oi Yentob, stop chasing after that Lady Godiva & bring me a coffee'

As you see, script writing is not my speciality !

what lovely news, im so glad - although with possible commercial talk competition in the offings, i think the split is as much designed to improve wm as it is cwr. on the other hand there is no getting away from the fact cwr listeners were robbed back in 95.

i cant wait for "94.8 104, 103.7 BBC WM across Coventry and Warks" to be replaced by "94.8 104, 103.7 BBC CWR" on kay's system - its at that point that cwr will have been officially reborn.

wm related, that lovely ed doolan promo was shown again, the only one to be using the local radio corporate design - i have to say its one of my favourites.

i thought doolan went out on cwr as well as wm - yet no mention of the cwr frequencies

and central are off to see how many midlanders enjoy lovely north wales and angelsy, apparently.

Suzanne seems to be struggling to make herself heard today, as her voice is very croaky, and is getting very faint at one point. We'll have to see if it lasts out until the end of the program, and there isn't a relief presenter available as there was when Anna Ford's went on the One O'clock news. I suppose Nick will just do the show on his own.

awww i think the spirit of kay got suzanne through the programme. i suspect a few of her links were don't by nick though, she didn't seem to say much after she had done that news-round- up early on.

and peter plisner has to be commended for his fabulous reports - they've all turned into little pop videos and everyone seems to include toy cars and lorrys speeding around the screen. the lovely 80s effects really make them complete. we may laugh, but i bet it takes ages to edit - i really admire them for going to so much effort. i demand more peter plisner content!

over on central they had an exclusive with michael shirley's release - he was in the london studio - and he had an on air reunion with his parents in leamington spa. i feared it would be tacky and esther-rantzen-esque, but central pulled it off quite nicely.

apart from the graphics.

Regional news in England gets worse and worse.

Fact is, is that there are too many regional newsrooms!

and what exactly is wrong with such news? i'd sooner watch fatima whitbread saving the day and faulty street lamps than tin-pot provincial politicians.

Errrrr... right.

Anyway, tonight's top story on Look East was as bizarre as any I've seen. A mother lets her 6 year old boy fill their car up with petrol, needless to say he manages to dowse his face in the stuff. He runs about complaining it stings. Luckily, Olympic javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread is nearby. She runs to the boy's aid by covering him with milk.

No, there are no spelling errors there. That really was the top story on tonight's Look East.

Six year old boy + petrol = Fatima Whitbread + milk

ROFL!! that does sound a fantastic story!!! who needs po-faced self important programmes with content like that.

shame i missed the thing about the suicide - not that im morbid, well, it just like trisha but better.

and tsk @ them not putting out an advert on bbc one about the show's return - i bet tons of people turned off during the shabina period - i never realised it was back till tuesday.

on central charlie popped in to let us know shes after 10 midlands schools to send in actual weather readings to compare her forecasts with.

tonight on MT suzanne was off ill, shefali on hols - so that meant a replacement had to be sought.

usually shefali covers for suzanne, if not then cath mackie, and of course in the past there was sue beardsmore on hand too. but tonight we had the pleasure of sarah falkland.

its a great injustice that it wasn't our kay, but that doesn't take away from the fact sarah did a damn fine job! to my knowledge she has only previously presented midlands breakfast once or twice and of course countless live reports.

but anyway, they had an announcement by normal announcer at 6.30 (which i'm surprised they had). no slip ups and you wouldn't have guessed it was her first time - you can only imagine how nerve-racking it must be to present *the midland's premiere news programme*

i would have thought alison marsh figured in the backup presenter dept, being a senior broadcast journo who's forever covering weather/sport and sometimes midlands breakfast - but she never appears.

so it must mean the presenter seniority is as follows:

nick owen
mike collie
steve clamp
giles latcham

(surely mike kilbane is considered too, former *midlands breakfast supremo* and surely david gregory deserves a shot at it too)

suzanne virdee
shefali oza
cath mackie
sarah falkland

(obviously kay deserves to rank at the top - and i bet sophie long would have been pretty high if she hadn't left)

and theres the fabulous midlands weather idol trailer running at the mo:

mike collie and the midlands today weekend team went on the road today- the entire show came from the royal show in warwickshire.

twas a rather nice bulletin and mike seemed at home seeing as he's done his fair share of countryfile. there were no graphics/astons used at all (i think) apart from the copyright notice super-ed at the end.

i wonder if it was live - if so, surely they must have had someone standing by on-set back at pebble mill to take over should they lose touch Confused even if not live it must have been recorded/edited close to tx looking at the clouds in the sky which only appeared at around 4.45 ish - and stoneleigh is more than 45 mins from pebble mill (in the event of mike having to abandon the ob and present from brum)

but anyway, nice touch, shame central weren't as adventurous. i bet yvonne or michelle would do a lovely weekend update out and about - especially yvonne.

BBC ONE English Regions on DSAT

what about the newer regional progs, like Look North Hull. They can't transmit on analogue BBC 2, can they

Not sure what that's got to do with the price of fish.

Okay, so a few minor regions don't get their regional programme because of a high interest tennis match.

I suspect the twenty-three viewers for the minor regional programme don't count as high as the thousands of Henman fans in the great scheme of things.

Quite reasonable, I should think, even if I HATE tennis, personally.

my sentiments exactly. i cant believe how short sighted some people seem to be. its an extremely MINOR inconvenience that the viewers in the bbc's smallest regions lose their programme or sub-opt on 1 or 2 days per year due to a rather larger audience wishing to watch a rather large *event* on the corporation's flagship network.

why should one of the nation's sporting highlights be shunted to bbc two? i mean the local news hogs the 6.30 slot on bbc one all year - would you rather bbc one moved the local news to late afternoon - or jump around the schedule during wimbledon, *just* to accommodate the viewers in oxfordshire, lincolnshire, channel islands and cambridgeshire? - bearing in mind, doing that would no doubt do viewing figures of local news no good as people lose track of the times day-to-day.

ive never seen sameena on east midlands - but then ive never watched their breakfast show. sameena *sometimes* appears on midlands breakfast (some would say even that is TOO often) and sometimes weekends.

but yes, it wouldn't be that strange if she popped up on bbc east midlands as her proper job is host of the bbc asian network drivetime show - and the network broadcasts from both bbc pebble mill and bbc leicester.

Tonight's MT had Lorna 'BBC WM stand in presenter' Bailey on weather, but the most interesting thing was ' Sexy Specs' Suzanne Verdi !

I assume Suzanne normally wears contacts, & she's got a infection of some sort, which is why she's wearing them, unless someone knows different!

Noted in tonight's 'Evening Mail', Shabina's column now refers to her as a 'Midlands Today' presenter.

God help us !!

rofl, as if its not bad enough reading shabina's column, but then to go and admit it ... well, i'm shocked. Laughing pure drivel i tell you.

I read Doolan's column too, for your info too !! (What does 'ROFL' stand for BTW?)

Anyway Blondie stand in aka Alison Marsh did the weather on Thursday, then Lorna came back tonight, bearing in mind she is supposed to be up early tomorrow for the 5am Early Show on WM.

Suzanne left her glasses off yesterday, & commented on various cures that the great Midlands public had sent in for her hay fever, but she was wearing them again tonight.

A quick plug for the repeat transmission of WM's 'The Other Side Of Nick Owen', currently on at the moment(7pm to 8pm).

The regional trail after Sophie, was Shefali plugging Weather Idol !

i used to read doolan too - before the paper went down hill with that supposed 'relaunch'. rofl = roll on the floor laughing.

shame we haven't seen more of james mc donald on the weather during shefali's holiday, i mean lorna seems a nice enough girl - but i don't think she's cut out to be a weather presenter. and alison ... well, shes harmless, but james always adds some comedy - be it breaking the computer or tucking his shirt right in his trousers and pulling them up to his armpits. btw, has anyone else noticed that lorna *never* uses a weather clicker to move the charts on- i wonder why?

and yes - ed doolan interviewing nick owen was a damn good programme.

for anyone who missed it, here is a snippet where he talks about the current success of midlands today:

The Other Side of Nick Owen - real audio - 1 min 10 sec

oh and nick owen's cats are called dusty (after dusty springfield, of whom nick was a big fan) and freddie (after freddie mercury)

yes the 4 logo would have worked, but that's completely irrelevent.

in my opinion, its not *that* irrelevant, because replacing the logo would also remove the huge brand awareness built up over the last 20 years. in an era with tin-pot companies and brands popping up all over the place, the vast majority of which have little brand awareness - and even the most basic platform has 26 channels, would it really be a good idea for channel 4 to start a fresh?

especially as the channel has successfully managed to capture it's fair share of the crucial 18 - 30 market under their current guise.

but thats just my opinion anyway.

that aside, nice mocks.
