I'm on holiday in Jordan... was just listening to the radio on the tv... if you see what i mean... and the lovely Owen piped up reading the news on the World Service. Sounding very authoritative. No mention that it was great to have you with us, but him nevertheless. Terrible shame we don't get to see him - he's deifinitely got a face for tele, but this is clearly a new move for Mr T. Hopefully he'll get on to BBC World soon.
Owen's also been on the Morning news regularly, hasn't he?
Whatever has happened to the likes of Sian Jones, Isha Sesay and Rachel McTavish? And where have all the ex-NC faces gone? I know some have gone to Sky, but the likes of Andrew Harvey, Leyla Daybelge and John Nicholson are nowhere to be seen!
They've all cleared off to places that pay much better money than ITV.
The pay, lack of meal allowance for reporters out on the road, and the dreadfull mileage allowance is hardly an attraction for many people, except for those that want to get into the business and glean a spot of experience. Sadly, the good ones move on very quickly.
Has this journalist actually compared US/UK news reports recently? I watched the 'CBS Evening News' last night and was stuck by how lapse and irrelevent they were when compared with UK reports, particually on the Nepal story. Seems completely illogical and slightly stupid arguement to mount, of course two countries style of reportage will be different, much the same as Italian and French reporting varies vastly.
If you've ever been to the US, and I'm sure you have (after all, who hasn't) and watched any of the US news networks/shows, You can't have failed to notice how obsessed they are with events in Iraq. Just about every bulletin/programme leads, and ends with something concerning Iraq. It's a nation that really doesn't give a damn about anyone else other than itself.
Having been there many times to visit family on a frequent basis, it all get rather dull and tedious hearing about events in Iraq and how it going to effect the great BIG (often wide-arsed) American person.
Maybe we go too far the other way. Certainly the BBC tend to concentrate on issues too much abroad (and you can't beat a good environmental issue on any BBC news programme) I have to say, despite the cutbacks, ITV news have the balance just about right!
I don't think chemistry has any place on news programmes ... just shut up and read the autocue, please.
I agree however that for entertainment shows it requires both people to get on off screen.
What are you talking about you Parrot - Parrot - Parrot??
Of course chemistry has a place on regional news, much more so than ever before. As ITV has just about killed off any form of regional identity, the only way it can keep its head above the corporate vultures is for the news presenters to inject whatever enthusiasm they can!
Nothing for me can beat the Mike Debens and Ron Lobeck combination. Bev and Geoff get pretty close though. Phil and Charlotte border on the cringeworthy
With all due respect to 'Hunchback' Hornby (I noticed someone called him that in an earlier thread! ), I think Charlotte & Glen Thompsett are a good double act. But in the South sub-region you can't beat Fred Dineage and Carl Tyler! I loved it on the ITV50 in the South programme when they mentioned the mic-tug incident following the Hayling Island tornado. As much as I like Gemma, Robin and Martyn, you can't get a better pair than Fred and Carl.
So good to see Glen back on tonights main programme. He and Charlotte look grreat together. More please!!!!!!!!!
In the good old days of course there'd be a camerman behind each one.
I was just thinking that the other day.. I remember watching Coast to Coast (former news programme for the South/East) in the early days and the cameramen - wearing headphones - wheeling the cameras back as the credits rolled at the end. The studio seemed to look huge.
Well TVS had decent studios in Southampton and Maidstone for their local news operations - and they were a high quality studio show. In modern ITV terms the studios WERE huge... Compare them to the tin sheds at Whiteley - which are too small even to house projector backdrops.
Staff at Meridian have been told not to walk too 'heavy footed' behind the camera's once set up, why - because the floor shakes - strange but very true!!
Yes, its all about running telly on a shoestring. Why pay for big studios when you can pay peanuts and delight in the crap that ITV now supply!!
I would prefer them to make funny comments over the end credits than just promote the next programme. FIVE seem to have a mixture of that on the end credits of Home and Away -sometimes they promote whats coming next, sometimes the announcer will comment on the storylines/characters.
Well, what would expent from the likes of Trish Betram and the others at 5 - they know how to do it properly - and my how it shows!
The whole business of becoming more conversational on ITV has lead to many of the announcers sounding very bored - and because they no longer 'project' what they say - the music tends to drown them completely. ITV's past presentation success has in many instances been down to its announcing staff who firlmy believed in 'selling the product' and 'talking it up'....now all they do is 'talk it down' - over those ghastly idents.
My guess is that whatever bright spark initiated the new style, it'll flop by the end of the year and revert to what ITV
has
been good at for years - selling its goods in an upfront way to a mass market.
Yep, still doing the lacklustre ITV Local forecasts. If you compare her ITV Local forecasts to those of Martyn, Robin or even Philippa, Gemma's are always brief. I like Gemma, but I wish she'd do the Local forecasts with the same depth as her colleagues.
Well with the ITV NC looking doomed, I believe it is of paramount importance that this thread be started. We don't want Owen Thomas to be a casualty of the impending (apprently) closure of the ITV News Channel, so the only thing to save him is if he were to become a permanent feature of the news on ITV1.
We NEED Owen to do a shift on ITV1, just to prove what a fab presenter he is and how capable he is of handing a mainstream bulletin. I urge you all to do what I have done and email ITV News at news@itv.com and tell them just how fab Owen is and how deserving he is of a higher profile position.
You KNOW it makes sense. Together, we can make a difference.
YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING. I THINK HE SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF OF TELEVISION AND PLACED FIRMLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NORTH SEA.
Any other notable spelling mistakes on captions by the way?
I say Corruthers - standards have been slipping over at ITV Towers for some time! Promos/Continuity/Presentation is all pretty bad.
You see - they don't want experience any more.
a) Its too expensive
b) You can boss the kids around much more and they won't answer back.
c) The Young 'uns don't pose a threat.
d) The whole place is run by DAMN Granada anyway - they might have produced some of the best shows for the network, but look at the damage they've done to it now!
