Could ITN News Channel rise from the ashes?

Londoner posted:

I think you're misunderstanding the idea of ITV News being produced ''in-house''.

AFAIK, ITV aren't saying ''we will create our own ITV News division and not bother with ITN''. They are saying ''We will buy ITN and thereby gain control of our own news producer, in the same way that other commercial operators do''.

There's no talk that I know of, of ITV abandoning ITN... quite the opposite, in fact.

It's a bargaining tactic rather than a realistic suggestion, but Charles Allen has said that if the other ITN shareholders won't sell their shares to ITV, he would bring ITV News in-house, thus pulling the rug from under ITN.

Sadly, Mr Allen and his shareholing buddies realise that news makes them no money whatsoever. Ask anyone in the ITV sales team and they'll tell you - "you can't sell avertising around the news"
Any money that's floating 'in the kitty' would be better spent on programme making - flying Ant & Dec out to Australia for "I'm a celebrity....." etc.
Why do you thing that regional news lost it's centre break in the vast majority of the country - they couldn't sell air time around it!

So you see - the ITV news channel is a dead duck. Its NOT earning ITV any money. Very sadly, its not about credibility - its about pandering to ITV's core audience - the C2DE's (lower -end audience demongraphic)

Is ITV1 sounding a bit muffled to you?

Juicy Joe posted:
Don't know if its just me but for the past week, ITV1 on analogue has sounded very muffled and not very crisp. All the other channels sound fine and on digital, it is fine too. I am receiving ITV Central from the Sutton Coldfield/Lichfield transmitter.

Now is it just my set, or has anyone else noticed this? If it was a national fault, you would have expected this to have been put right by now... Rolling Eyes

I think you'll find it all depends on who the duty 'continuity announcer' is. Sad Some sound as if they have a sock in the mouth.!!

Meridian TV/BBC South East

Meanwhile on Meridian East they had their problems. Helen James fluffed her lines repeatedly and kept trying to read Ian axton's lines.

The link to Sports girl Sarah Saunders failed so they had to do the sports stories themselves.

Why can't we see more of Glen Thomsett on the east edition of Meridian Tonight when the resident anchor Phil Hornby is off. He was a regular before the whole thing moved to its new base, he's local, knows and IS known in the area and comes over as a likeable guy. It now seems to be a complete free-for-all with every Tom Dick and Harry having a go. Basics of telly and radio - keep up the continuity - people DON'T like change - just watch those audience figures take a dive - that is if they haven't already!!!!???

I may be wrong, but I've always been led to believe that news presenters are not allowed to appear in adverts. Perhaps someone decided that No Wet Wonderfoam causes a conflict.

I surf a few of the shopping channels and haven't seen the No Wet Wonder thing for a few months now - maybe they ran out of soap suds!!
Just goes to prove that Glen is quite versatile in what he can do - at least he has the abilty to ad-lib his way out of a paper bag.

Who could replace Jenny at HTV?

I really think they should give Jenny's position over to a great female presenter/reporter used by Meridian East. Her name is Lis Spieght.

Give it to Fiona (dizzy as can be, but great on air) or poach one of the Points West talent pool. Any one of their female presenters could out do the Hull. (Imogen Sellers looks great but no doubt will be overlooked in favour of Amanda. And Sally Challoner or Susan Osman are both well known and off-screen at the moment. Either one would be a great coup!)

Take from the "TALENT" pool of Points West. What talent? Lis far outdoes any of the people on the Beeb or ITV West News - you just have to give her a chance to prove herself. She's a great all-rounder, can lend her hand to the light-and-fluffy and more serious stuff - and as far as studio presentation is concerned - wow - have you ever seen her present a programme? She at least comes across as having the 'human' touch - some people just don't like to smudge there make-up or move there head for fear of messing up a hair-do.
Come on - be fair - move over old farts and let someone new have a go!!

Who could replace Jenny at HTV?

Nick Harvey posted:
Lisa Aziz and Glen Thompsett, now THAT would be a team.

Nick, I hadn't thought of that double combination, but yes, what a good idea. Glen is no stranger to the West, having broadcast on a number of radio stations during the 1980's and early 1990's, namely Severn Sound, Wiltshire Radio (which became the giant we all know as GWR) and didn't he start his career at hospital radio in Moonraker country??
I've watched his career closely - it would be nice to see him back in the West, could certainly inject a spot of personality into what is fast becoming a very dull programme.

Someone's been rumbled at work, by the looks of it.

I really think they should give Jenny's position over to a great female presenter/reporter used by Meridian East. Her name is Lis Spieght. She look lovely, very personable and is the sort of girl who wouldn't turn you away for an autograph. Go HTV (or should that be ITV West News) give her the gig.!!

celeb love island?

ITV have overdone this whole 'celebrity' thing. I'm getting fed up with seeing them just in it for easy money and the attention! i.e. Rebecca Looser and Abi Titface! Rolling Eyes Mad How long before Celebrity Wrestling is shunted?! Evil or Very Mad

Here Here. It's Boring, predictable, tacky and doesn't even get a very good audience. Just when will ITV realise that reality is dying?
Sad thing is, I don't even give it a chance anymore. Like many people on this thread, if it has "Celebrity" in the title - I'll go and watch something on Discovery Channel. Who are those so called celebs anyway?

I think ITV should have a new show entitled - "I'm a Continuity Announcer - get me out of here"
They could all be stuck in a voice booth - decked out like a jungle - trying to 'outdo' each others continuity links - the worse link gets voted out by the great un-washed - what do you think????
Question is - who would you put in the Jungle voice booth?

Crap Continuity vs Fab Continuity

Square Eyes posted:
Yes, another anti-ITV thread I'm afraid. Even as a fully paid up member of the ITV Lovers Association, there is only so much a man can take.

Anyone else sick of ITV plugging their latest reality celebrity flop at every single junction, at the expense of actually bothering to tell us what the next programme is ?

Case in point just now, the whole purpose of the anno was to tell us about the 12 singleton celebrities (yes singleton, not simpleton) who we'll get the chance to vote off the island come Monday. It's Saturday afternoon, who cares ? No mention of what was coming up now, nothing. So I had to flick to teletext to find out it was a film I had no interest in viewing, before switching off. (maybe that's there ploy ?)

So, who's bright idea was it to turn ITV's continuity department into an extension of the marketing department ? By all means, mention it, cross promote, but don't take over the whole flipping junction. I don't blame the individuals particularly (although not a patch on the golden days), but what they have is a very narrow remit to flog this latest desperate attempt at ratings short termism, with no room for any improvisation and creativity. Do they actually need an announcer there today, just trot out the same clap trap at every junction, that's another salary saved surely ?

On the flipside, Five's continuity is fab. Especially the likes of Trish, her anno's through the night before delights such as Sons & Daughters are fab, warm and witty, actually making references to the programmes. I don't care if they're pre-recorded or not, they engage the viewer as a lead into the next programme, surely this is the purpose ?

ITV take note, but they won't.

Well, what can one say. ITV1 continuity DOES leave much to be desired. Why come off the back of a promo (any promo) and mention it again. Yes, pick up from it, but use it to link into your next programme. An art, I'm affraid that is not used by the current crop of announcers (with the exception of Mr Seed and Mr Rogers)
How many of you have noticed that ITV1 no longer promotes anymore than 24 hours in advance. If linking into a blackbuster movie (ie something that Sky would have shown months in advance) and another BIG movie is scheduled later in the week - why not promote it. No, instead they promote as much reality crap that is rapidly losing them an audience.
Continuity on ITV1 is brash, crap and lacks any sense of imaginitive writing skills. Please Please bring back the people that know how to do it, and whatsmore have got a PASSION for it.
