GMTV (1993 - 2010)

Yes, relaunch is official
Yes, graphics and set being looked at.
Yes, it's expected to be a a dog's dinner, like previous attempts, because management are split on what they want, and the people who have been charged to oversee it have no experience in doing it before.
Bitter? Ask me a question.

BBC Breakfast

Turnbull and Williams posted:
It's fascinating IMO that during July and August, when Bill Turnbull was presenting Breakfast almost every day, the programme was ahead in the ratings. Then bring on September and the return of Dermot Murnaghan, and the programme's ratings fall. Mere coincidence I wonder?

I still maintain that Dermot, while a relatively competent news presenter, is not suited to the style of Breakfast.

Actually, it's to do with audience. GMTV's audience (young families, mums, kids)go on holiday over the summer, and return in September for school.
Breakfast was ahead, becasue the old and the infirm haven't learnt how to change the channel off '1' yet.

GMTV boss quits

Roger Mellie posted:
I think Eammon Holmes had a point when he said that GMTV had gone downhill in terms of its journalistic output, the ostensible reason for his departure to Sky.

And he's much happier now right?
I think you'll find Sky News execs are far from impressed.

I only watch BBC Breakfast for the paper reviews and for the business stories with Declan between 630am and 7am (UK Time)

Gosh. unmissable. I wish I was so dedicated. But then I'm into girls, cars, and tut tut...booze.

GMTV boss quits

ITV, of late, are now trying to compete and are actually gaining viewers (i.e. Saturday Cooks, the new Sunday morning schedule etc...) so it does seem to work so why is it pointless????

It's like trying to communicate with a mute deaf person.
Lets try another approach -
At different times during the day, different people and different numbers of people watch television.

Lets look at the GMTV Newshour, and the charge it's full of competitions and lifestyle programming.
A typical running order -

0600 HEADLINES + WEATHER
0602 TOP NEWS STORY
0603 NEWS BULLETIN
0607 MORNING PAPER REVIEW
0608 SPORT ITEM
0612 NEWS ITEM
0615 NEWS HEADLINES
0617 AD BREAK
0620 NEWS ITEM
0625 NEWS/SHOWBIZ ITEM
0627 WEATHER FORECAST
0629 TOP NEWS STORY
0632 NEWS BULLETIN
0635 COMPETITION (30 to 50 seconds long)
0636 LOCAL NEWS OPT
0639 PAPER REVIEW
0640 MAIN NEWS STORY OF THE DAY
0643 HUMAN INTEREST STORY
0646 NEWS HEADLINES
0647 ENTERTAINMENT STORY
0655 AD BREAK
0657 WEATHER FORECAST
0659 START OF GMTV TODAY

So where I ask is the froth exactly?

GMTV boss quits

You people have lost the concept of why commercial television exists.
Do you honestly think that people at GMTV don't understand their audience and don't pore daily over running orders and overnights?
I'll tell you for free, it's a razor cut operation with items and sponsorship placed at strategic times to maximise viewership, hold on to viewers and generate revenue.
And for the plonker that asked 'What is wrong with having a newshour programme on at the weekend?', THERE ARE NO VIEWERS THEN. Why the hell would a company pour their money on a pointless operation like that. THat's a stupid suggestion, and just underlines the fact this whole forum is FULL OF AMATEUR TELEVISION WATCHERS.

I don't think it should be hard hitting all the time, but if a News Hour is called that, then that is what it should be.

I've never understood why we don't get wall to wall cereals, bacon and eggs, and of course toast with BREAKFAST. Twit.

Typical BBC Breakfast viewing family
Moderate/high income, father is probably a teacher, lawyer, accountant or manager. Most likely to live in the home counties and drive a Volvo estate.

Couldn't agree more, GMTV know their audience and play to them.
If you Gideons hate GMTV so much, try doing what Breakfast's audience can't do without a stiff gin and a crossword first - c h a n g e t h e c h a n n e l

GMTV boss quits

intheknow posted:

Sorry, but recently at least, that is ****. BBC Breakfast has been trouncing GMTV for a couple of months, and even now when you would expect GMTV to recover after summer, it is either a dead heat or Breakfast is ahead.

That's utter b+llocks, and the same diatripe spewed by the Tristrams at White city during the summer months.
Last week share of individuals:
GMTV: 28.7%
Breakfast: 27.9%

The week previous
GMTV: 29%
Breakfast: 28%

GMTV's audience is young families, specifically housewives and kids. The type of people who go on holiday when the schools are off, leaving behind the old, the infirm, the people who can't work their remote, let alone change the channel from... 1 which turns on when the telly is on.
Housewives and kids share:
GMTV: 34.4%, up 1.1% on last year

To clarify, the oldie pensioner p!ssy knickers and lavender core audience of BBC Breakfast - the same people they plot their contrived camaraderie and 'explainer' graphics too.
Hence the 'lead' over summer, and hence the return to a ratings trounce from September...and make no mistake, it's a drubbing.
Why?
GMTV's Newshour programme last week has more viewers than Newsnight, the Channel 4 News at 7pm, ITV Lunchtime News and Channel 5 News at 7.
Go do some research before spewing.

Face it, re-launch, re-hash, Breakfast is more boring than two bald people argueing about wigs. And it's why people want to wake up, be informed, and be left with a smile on their face.
