Poor technical quality of TV ads

One really bad example was in December, when Kellogg's ran their Christmas Corn Flakes ad with some serious interlacing/combing issues. Okay so it was an old advert they'd dug out and tried to modernise, but how anyone could have ever thought the end result was good enough for broadcast is a bit of a mystery.

TV Whirl - Celebrating 20 Purple Years

Continuing our whistlestop tour of Europe this March, we've been to Sweden for several days with coverage from TV6 and also TV4, and if anyone with a greater knowledge of their Swedish landmarks wants a challenge to recognise the locations in their stings go mad!

* *

Since then we've moved over to Germany. Long time visitors to the site may remember we started coverage of children's channel Super RTL waaaay back in the early days of the site in 2002. Not much has been added there since (although we do have a few things stacked up to be added from the mid years). But we're back in 2019 as part of our celebration of our European broadcasting neighbours. With stings, break bumpers and even some rarer seen In Vision Continuity from the German station!

Whatever happens with the UK this month, we're going to be continuing the celebration of our fellow broadcasters up to the end of March... in between our own upcoming 18th birthday celebrations!

E4, More4, Film4 and 4Music Rebrand:

Another new ident from E4 has appeared, marking their first new one for 2019. As far as I can tell it premiered before Baewatch last night at 10pm, but I will review some more junctions this evening just to see if it popped up any earlier.

This time round it's all action figures set up on a battlefield, filmed in a 'frozen moment in time' style. Almost feels like this could have worked as a special one for Adult Swim, given the similarity in style to Robot Chicken.

[adult swim] on E4 & All 4

Seems like use of the special Adult Swim stings has been largely dropped already on E4. They were in full use weeks 1 and 2, I couldn't tell you about last week due to some reception issues, and then by week 4 last night they've mostly been replaced as they now have a sponsor for the whole thing instead. A single one of the stings was still used before the first show in the strand, but before the rest a Peperami sponsor sting has now taken its place.

I suppose if they've managed to get a sponsor it at least means there's more chance of this lasting longer term. Although it would really still benefit with being a bit more consistently placed in the schedule.

BBC Oneness - idents and presentation

You can get the network version from Asa's thing, but the new ident as aired in the 9pm junction on Northern Ireland.

Video

Oddly having checked my recording of the junction from BBC One Scotland, it doesn't seem they aired their own copy of this, and just fell back to taking the network feed instead. Although the 8pm and 10pm junctions were both local as usual. Alongside the Three Time ident on Monday, that's two things they've missed out with having local versions of on BBC One Scotland this week.

European Channel Roundup - 2019

As a site, I normally steer well clear of the politics for sensible reasons as it often brings out the nastiest in society. However it's hard to completely ignore the fact that March is going to be a bit of a crunch month for the UK and it's future relationship with Europe.

In a break away from all the political arguments though, I've decided this month to do something a little more positive on the site. So throughout the whole of this month, there's a feature going to be running on the site as a celebration of neighbouring European broadcasters, with a whistlestop tour of presentation across Europe. Starting today with TV6 in Sweden (mainly as I'm already out on tour in the Nordic country this week), one of many channels which despite being targeted to another country was licenced by Ofcom in the UK. With updates across other countries both new and from the archive to follow over the next 4 weeks.

BBC Scotland - the launch

Another ident aired in the 3.15pm junction. It's another variant of the 'Rain' one, just this time the logo isn't coloured pink but a bluey-green instead.

Local TV

They could even divert the money to the struggling print industry instead. I mean, the pennies currently being spent on That's Scotland would surely buy at least 5 copies of a local newspaper! Wink

BBC Scotland - the launch

Definitely loving the new ident set which comes across as well executed and looks quite classy. Although it seems very jarring against the more garish graphics used elsewhere. I can see what they were going for, but perhaps that'll end up being toned down a bit for some 'technical reason' as happened with those BBC Two idents shortly after launch. Wink

Video of the fourth ident as aired in the 10.30 junction for anyone who missed it too. Presumably we're going to have to wait until tomorrow to see any more now.

STV Main Thread:

Also it's only just registered with me that they've *finally* dropped the HD part off the channel DOG at some point in the last month too, only a mere 6 years after ITV. Got a bit of a gap in the recordings for STV so couldn't give an exact date, but it was certainly still there at the New Year, and gone by February 11th so ahead of this mini-refresh. I'm surprised it still lasted this long really after they'd already dropped it from the idents last year.

Latest Updates - January-February

I'm going to try and rattle through the occasional roundup quicker than usual as experience tells me if it's not a full episode of something being uploaded to Youtube, interest is quite limited. However recent updates in the last few months have included:-

Server Move
At the start of February, the main server suffered from some Russian Bot hacking. However as I'm not one to allow that to disrupt the daily updates to the site (currently at over 300 days since one was missed), the site was just decamped for a few weeks to the always running backup server and continued as normal. Things have since returned, and have been running back off a fresh, new and faster server since Mid-February.

New Presentation
2019 has seen a few new things appearing already pres-wise, with lots of coverage from E4 for both their new Adult Swim block and special programme break bumpers for Shipwrecked and Celebs Go Dating. And just this week, the mini refresh/rehash from STV. Every Monday has also seen running coverage throughout the day of the latest ITV Creates ident, with fully edited clips usually up within 10-15 minutes of first broadcast.

* *

Old Presentation
A lot of content has been added for Yorkshire's News and Weather sections. As well as quite a few clips from CITV both in the 90s and from early doors after the second cancellation of invision continuity in 2004. There have also been a few lesser-seen things from BBC2 from the 90s, including the second variant of their 'Car' ident and a special 'Affairs To Remember' film strand.

* *

Teletext
A few mammoth collections of pages have gone up courtesy of some software improvements I've made (it does mean some extra correction errors will probably slip through, but also means more pages more often). There's the site's first service from Central Television, from a summer bank holiday in 1995, and a Yorkshire Television service from 2000, where you can relive the news from the first series of Big Brother.

STV Main Thread:

I guess this is STV's attempt at a quick little freshen up ahead of the BBC Scotland launch!

The competition must be terrified! Wink
