Maximum temperature of an hdmi tv stick?

Another flaw I ran into with running these sticks off a television USB port is that it can hide other problems it's causing. I spent months trying to track down why several muxes on Freeview were either breaking up or disappearing completely, even powering off everything else in the room except the TV to try and rule out any device interference. It eventually turned out to be the vanilla Roku stick causing interference with terrestrial (how exactly I'm not sure, as wifi frequencies are quite far away, and you'd expect everything else on them to be shielded given where they're intended for use). And although I thought I'd cut power to everything else, as it was drawing its power from the set at that time it remained active!

ITV 2019 idents and presentation - ITV Creates

What doesn't help with a lot of these I think is that they always launch it with what appears to be the most 'news-safe' version of the ident, which is also nearly always the dullest one of the set and shows off very little of the art's potential. Unless GMB is covering some particularly sensitive topic, it seems unnecessary to start with the plainest one every week. And then to give it as much airtime as it gets throughout the rest of the week.

The second ident from this week, as shown into the 10.30 junction, is a prime example where the lighting and angles of the camera really brings the piece to life and looks so much better. We could still do with some more soundtracks though!

ITV 2019 idents and presentation - ITV Creates

From the stuff shown so far, the ITV logo on this one does almost seem like it was tacked on as an afterthought rather than being an important part of the work. Although looking at her gallery a good chunk of her work seems to be the exact same 'triangles on glass', so I'm guessing she wasn't willing to deviate too much to try and form something that was actually specific to ITV.

TV Whirl - Celebrating 20 Purple Years

As we start another Monday of throughout-the-day coverage for a new week on ITV Creates, this also marks an important milestone in terms of website updates...

*

Yes, it's now reached an entire year of having an update every single day on the site! I'm planning to keep going for the time being, although I won't lie given the general lack of interest from folks in seeing an update *every* day and the need to spend more time on developing new features, I won't guarantee there'll not be an occasional day or so skipped in the future. 365 days is still a proud target to have reached though!

Updates on the site most recently have included more for our March European Channel Roundup (which got extended slightly to April obviously) with coverage from DMAX Germany (so you can now compare it to the UK) and RTL II, BBC Four's 'Born Digital' season, and archive stuff for Channel 4 Nightime from the 80s, Tyne Tees from the 90s and ITV in the early 2000s.

You can always follow the newest updates on the latest updates page, which also has an RSS feed available if anyone still uses those!

BBC Four

I spotted they've continued using the paint on speaker ident several times too lately. Although given how fairly generic and completely unreferencing to the web the batch of 'satisfying' idents were, it's not a huge surprise they've seen continued use well past the original Born Digital season.

With the way budgets are these days, I suspect this is the closest BBC Four will ever get to a rebrand now - by officially latching things onto a season of something instead (does it then count on a spreadsheet somewhere as general promotion rather than rebranding spend perhaps? Razz) and then just 'keeping' them afterwards.

Ident Central

Whilst this has come about rather suddenly (especially given Rob only migrated everything to new hosting a few weeks back), I can understand it being abrupt if the domain has just expired. If you were already considering the future, shelling out money just to renew a domain for another year or so probably doesn't make much sense.

I can totally appreciate this decision too. The amount of work that goes into running a pres site far outweighs the thanks you get from many folks, with others making constant demands under the impression you actually owe them something. Ultimately the whole thing just ends up being a huge drain on your life and takes a lot to keep going against. I definitely wish Rob all the best on his continuing projects though. Hopefully they'll allow you to relax a bit more, and can continue to go from strength to strength.

I've fixed that signature now anyway. I always miss out something!

Happy 18th TV Forum

I very rarely pop my head into the Mocks Forum (not for any particular reason other than habit either), but just occasionally something attracts my attention enough and this is one of those such times. Excellent work, and a lovely touch for the day! Very Happy

Happy 18th birthday

I've already said it elsewhere, but why not here too. Happy 18th Birthday TV Forum, and don't do anything too wild today. So many people are always keen to write off traditional forums in a world of big 'soshal meedya' platforms now, but this place continues to be a great place for information and discussion and I hope it continues for many years to come.

(Now, everyone get over to the Mocks Forum if you've not already for pip2's latest contribution for the day. Certainly beats a picture of a train!)

Celebrating 18 years online

*

March 22nd 2019 marks the 18th year the site has been online (and save for an occasional week or so where hosting has caused issues, that's actually properly online). It's been a long road getting to an age where the site is finally old enough to drink and vote in elections, as well as probably now having been around several years before some forum members on here were even born.

The site continues to expand more than ever, so as we move into our next year online, a few stats on what has changed since the 17th birthday:-

* Not a single missed day of updates in 348 days now. We're just shy of a full year with a site update every day
* Around 1160 new clips added, or about a third of the site total
* 7655 high resolution images, taking the total to over 16000
* 2303 frames from various Teletext services across the years
* Coverage from 4 new ITV regions and 8 new channels elsewhere
* 8 new DVB-S2 tuners pointed at UK satellite on Astra 28.2 and 3 DVB-S/DVB-S2 tuners permanently pointed at Europe on 19.2

A lot more is planned for 2019 to bring new features to the site and improve the speed of updates, and once again I'd like to thank the regular site visitors for their continued support throughout - it's ultimately what makes all the hard work really worth it!

TV Whirl - Celebrating 20 Purple Years

Oddly enough all I keep seeing in the TV6 logo is the current Ident Central one. Despite the fact that apart from being circular and using a similar colour palette, there aren't really *any* other similarities!

*

Rob's so going to hurt me now... or possibly replace his logo again tomorrow! Wink

(This post would have worked so much better if the forum software hadn't decided now was a good time for a page break too!)

BBC Four

The ident as aired at 9pm this evening - essentially the same as what was in the preview vid on social media, just in the correct aspect ratio.

A colourful cake for an ident though? I'm pretty sure that idea will never catch on...
