Agreed - I got the forecast info spot on going to the gym. Said it would rain over Boston and it did. Put on the waterproof and all was as described! I know the system they based it on in New Zealand can show isobars, so maybe that'll come in the not-too-distant.

Yeah they will Helen Willets (not Young) on Breakfast said they could do Isobars too...

But then the Welsh don't have quite the same identity crisis and complex that Scotland does, so they don't feel quite the same need to kick up such a huge stink. Yet.

This isn't a case of the Scots getting their knickers in a knot because of some nationalist issue - I simply want a clearer map on the forecast. To use a needlessly squewed image of the UK making things *less* clear is nonsensical.

But thanks for making me feel like somehow it's my own personal identity crisis at fault.

Helen Young on Breakfast on Monday responding to a comment about Scotland said that they can tilt the map whatever whay they wish so expect to see Scotland tilted differently as we see the graphics used more and more in the future.

Personally I like the new system, much more clear about what weather we will actually be getting instead of having to guess which symbol represents what area. The BBC obviously aren't showing us all it can do at this early stage as it would prbably be to much of a shock but I think give it time and people will see what a great system it is.

Recent Sky News/News 24 ratings

Do people really think that a relaunch of any channel will have a dramayic effect on the audience figures. What I mean is will people who currently watch news 24 really switch to Sky news just because of a new srudio and some new programmes. I doubt many would even notice. Its just a thought.

With regard to Freeview and News 24 figues, I think Cat has a point, however I think its also got something to do with the fact that people know the BBC News brand more than Sky News and so will naturally turn to them and not Sky.

what will happen to the news?

James_h292 posted:

we all know about the disaster and are all wanting to help, but it is taking over our lives. This sort of thing is an occupational hazard living in that part of the world - it goes with the territory.

say that to the poeple in South East Asia that have lost their homes, jobs and famillies.

Seriously, you've answered you're own question really, up until Tuesday there really was little else in terms of news to report. From Tuesday things have changed with the political parties starting back up again and other news items of importence taking place.

This news could have been reported,, as you said, like a running commerntary of the death toll, but the coverage I have seen has been much more than that, looking at how peoples lives have been effected, the aid effort and the politics of it all.

And I think if the death toll was only rising by three each time we all won't be so touched by what has happened. The number of people that have died is enormous and that makes the story one of the biggest that has happened in years.

Kaplinsky

Moz posted:
When will that woman get off our screens?

She was on the Royal Variety Performance last night lapping the attention up and trying her best to be a celeb. She was in the audience at Sports Review (why for God's sake?). She's all over Come Dancing (not that I watch that).

Journalist or celeb. Make your mind up Kaplinsky.

She's not even any good as a newsreader.

Don't talk such sh!t.

She was not 'all over Come Dancing' she presnted Come Dancing because Tess was off having a baby and then when Tess came back you didn't see here again.

I don't think being a journalist should stop someone being a normal well-known face, its not as if she's the only newscaster to do other projects. Even Sir Trevor does other things like present the TV awards and plentt of others have done entertainment shows - Jill Dando, Kirsty Young Micheal Burke.

I if you think she's everywhere, which I would dispute, then maybe you watch too much TV

Come Dancing v X Factor

Both programmes have done very well for their respective channel. The X faxctor got ITVI a young audience which advertisers like and a lot of money from phone votes and Strictly Come Dancing gave BBC One a huge Saturday night hit for the whole family and a great example of what sort of enetertainment the BBC should be producing.

News 24- Evening Format Change

cat posted:
tsunami__active posted:
Caught this Newswatch programme with Snoddy for the first time tonight....basically one of their pieces had a guy in the studio (the average viewer) complaining that News 24 repeated too many stories, devoted too much time to minor news stories and didn't cover enough stories from their correspondents across the globe.

Well in true PoV style, the editor-in-chief of News24 was in the studio responding- the comment of relevance was that he agreed that perhaps the channel could make more use of its correspondents across the UK and the globe.

He revealed that they would shortly be trialing a new format for some of the evening hours, when the anticipated breaking news levels are lower- rather than covering the usual 12 stories/hour (i.e. with reports/interviews), the new evening hour would be more pacy- covering about 25 stories/hour with less in depth coverage after the half hour. This would utilise more correspondents from outside London and the UK.

Sounds like an interesting plan, and something to look out for trials of soon.

Is that not a completely obscure way of looking at things?

When the 'anticipated levels of breaking news' are lower, this surely gives them more time to look in depth at particular stories, not give 3 minutes to each one because nothing exciting is happening.

I thought the new News 24 was supposed to be MORE in-depth... not less.

He wasn't talking about the whole evening just a certain time in the evening, he said that News 24 needed to go into stories in-depth but I think this idea would be for one hour where they would have the best reports from the whole of the BBC.

Coming 'NEXT' on BBC1 and 2

On Points of View today they did the usual thing of taking complaints and saying your wrong.

Their justification was that many viewers contacted them wanting to be better informed of schedule changes and new programmes - so these are designed to highlight those and programmes on other BBC channels.

My Point of View is not objecting to these promos - but how badly designed the BBC one is.

They do talk a load of crap (in my opinion). How can a banner telling us the News is up next at 10.30pm be telling us of programmes on other channels and schedule changes. They don't help their cause at all.

I think on that occasion (during Dirty War) it was because the news is normally on 10pm on a Sumday and if people were switching on to watch it.... well they needed to be informed when it was on.

Are BBC 1 News Presenters Credible?

Its not new for a news presenter to present a non-news programme. Micheal Burek presented 999, Jill Dando did Holiday, Huw Edwards has presented things for BBC Wales which are non-news. Whats the programme?

As long as these presenters can still present the news well, whats the issue? I can't understand why we can't see the personality of news presenters and still see them as being serious presenters - we can all be serious and fun at different times and I would imagine that people won't have a problem with Natasha doing Come Dancing and Breakfast.

Oh Dear ITV

ITV have jumped on the property bandwagon far too late, just as people are getting fed up of this particular genre.

Well five's new show with Justin Ryan and Colin whatsit is also late in the day bandwagon-wise, but is enjoyable. I will admit that its mostly saved by that brilliantly sardonic voice-over, but my point really is that ITV's shows have been plain lousy.

Although I can't stand Justin and Colin (one needs a good slapping), the show has been fairly sucessful, but, its a very simple format. It'll standout a bit cos of the fact that Justin, or is it Colin, is a drama queen and the sardonic voice-over, as you put it,

The problem with ITV property shows is that they are just too complex and not about property at all but the reality aspect (which isn't that great ) so it looses out on both counts.

No the papers said Brucie wasn't doing anymore and thats the difference.

Should be good if Ruby Wax is on the next series, she was brilliant on Celebrity FA.
