BBC News 8pm 90 seconds slot

You may want to read the BBC Editors blog from Craig Oliver about the new summary
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theeditors/2007/07/a_new_bulletin.html
And also it's interesting that no one says that Newsbeat is dumbing down in its short summaries when it does celebrity stories written in a less formal way but when it comes to TV everyone shouts out "dumbing down".

Because Newsbeat is on Radio 1...a radio station generally aimed at a younger audience. BBC ONE is mainstream - aimed at everyone. Therefore, it has to strike the right balance.

Which is exactly what it is trying to do by introducing this summary. The One, Six and Ten is there for people that want 30 minutes bulletins and the 8pm summary for people that just want a quick fix.

Its obviously going to be presented by either a Six or Ten presenter and probably it'll be interchangeable, it certainly won't be Natasha EVERY night, so saying that it'll be **** cos of her is just nonsense.

I agree that they need to be careful not be make it patronising, something which Newsbeat often succeeds at, but I think on the whole this is a good thing and I'm sure it'll develop overtime.

Recent Terrorist Threats

Brekkie Boy posted:
Probably not worth a new thread, but how stupid are the BBC to go ahead with a staged explosion in the centre of Cardiff yesterday (for Torchwood), which due to the current climate caused some concern amongst the locals.

The police may have been notified prior (perhaps they should have stepped in), but the BBC only informed people by putting a message on local radio an hour before - and there would be no chance of everyone in Cardiff hearing about it.

Once again it's the BBC behaving in such an obviously stupid manner and then apologising after the event.

Equally we shouldn't let the terrorists disrupt our normal life... in the current climate a balloon bursting would probably cause "concern" to some people. We need to continue with live as normally as we can to make sure these ******* don't beat us.

Sky News

And here's the other thing, and I may have missed something here, but they seemed to have lost the Sky.Com/News which use to alternate with the logo, I thought this would have stayed as it was recent change anyway and why couldn't they have incorporated the "MORE AT sky.com/news" which has always looked odd and will now continue to, I would have thought that these two things would have been one of the reasons for the new on screen look.

Sky News

I'm no fan of Sky News, but I've always thought their on screen look as been pretty good, although I think teh ticker has always scolled too fast and when "Breaking News" is scolling on the newswall its unbareable. Anyway, I was expecting something pretty good from them today and I actually can't believe how bad they are. This seems to be a massive step backwards and why on earth does the tower have to rotate, its just pointless and why include the date?

Sky News - what have you done?

The One Show with Adrian Chiles and Nadia Sawalha

gilsta posted:
Have they used ONE Life before or was that Radio 1? If they're going to do a pun that could be the one they use. Rolling Eyes

Both used it. Radio 1 use One Life as the health, sex etc advice. The BBC One show "ONE Life" works with that title because its about one persons life etc, not just cos its on BBC One - I would have thought anyway.

The One Show does sound a bit odd IMHO, Nationwide would be a better name.

I think C4 used it for something aswell, just after the BBC used it for Planet Earth - can't think of the C4 programme though.

Radio1 - Chris Moyles fails to show

(Quote removed)

Thats not the same thing at all. Commercial stations get paid to play ads so that people go out and buy the products, Radio One and Two get paid nothing to play the records they choose to play.

Selling off Radio One and Two is a completly stupid argument that shows that these people don't actually know what they are talking about.

As someone has said it would have a terrible effect on the advertising revenue of all commercial radio because R1 an R2 would take a huge chunk out of it.

Secondly both do things that the commercial sector just would not do. They pay music and have shows that would not servive on commercial radio. The sepcialost shows would all disappear because as a commercial station R1 would make more money continuing their daytime lineup 24 hours than they would having Zane Lowe et al on air.

A commercial station could not hold an event like The Big Weekend for free and attract the bands that it did and have a stage dedicated to new music.

R1 an R2 will always get it for being too popular and for damaging the commercial sector but what real advantage would the commercial sector have if R1 and R2 weren't owned by the BBC, the truth is none at all. Not really, it wouldn't actually benefit the listener in any real way.

BBC News 24

I don't think you can call the News 24 attempt a failure, it wasn't the best interview and there were some problems with understanding and an obvious language issue, but its good that News 24 can own up to this and take the piss out of itself... I think it had to do something as it seemed to be all over the papers and TV.

I very much doubt that it will damage the BBCs reputation or that of News 24s

Sky News

They're so against advertising at the BBC, aren't they?

Would be interesting to see exactly what Sky do with the channel if, in a few of years, they are still behind in the ratings by a bit, or slip even further down. If the Beeb are intent on making News 24 their main source for TV news (inevitable in the future that all news will be on the channel, and off BBC One/Two, surely) then Sky realistically could not compete unless they a) got a share of the licence fee for news production, or b) found the cash another way to improve their output.

BSkyB wouldn't sustain Sky News if it lost influence (and if it loses viewers, it would) particularly to the Beeb. They'd either have to pump even more money into it, and given that it's a total loss leader they probably wouldn't be too keen. News Corp don't like losing money - the only reason the Times is still going is because its readership is so important... just loses a sh!tload of money in the process though.

If by the time of the digital switchover Sky News is way behind News 24 in the ratings, it wouldn't surprise me to see them shutting the channel down. BSkyB is primarily about making money, and News was only folly and gave them some political influence. If News 24 has substantially more viewers that influence will fritter away and they'll be far less happy to keep on shoving cash into the hands of whoever is running it by then... way, way, way off though!

I agree that News 24 will be the main home of news and that news on BBC One and Two etc will be the BBCs appointment to view news programmes - I would imagine that the One, Six and Ten would change substancally to focus on viewer stories and issue much like NewsNight.

As far as Sky is concerned, and where they have failed with the relaunch thus far, is that people don't know when they can see a full run down of the news on it anymore. The advantage that the BBC have is more channels.

It would be a shame for Sky News to be shut down, they have shown perfectly well, how they can compete with the BBC to produce news on a smaller budget, they just seem to have lost some focus and if it continues to fail (they of course need time to establish the new schedule and make changes) then they should simply revert back to a rolling news channel.
