BBC News 24 Relaunch

Like the new look alot. The Studio is very nice and the presenters seem more relaxed, the new camera angles make a huge difference. The graphics are good and very smooth, not too sure about the huge title bit though, perhaps they should make that smaller, but the one line info bar thingy is ok, I think you can get everuything you need from that space and its not as if it make s ahuge difference - perhaps it could turn into a two line strap when it needs to ....

All in all I like it, hopefully they'll smooth out some of the things and perhaps when they have a busier news day with proper hard news as the top story it'll be even better!

Rachel Attwell's just been on LBC 97.3's media programme with Matt Wells.

Sadly it was very obviously recorded on Thursday or earlier, as it refers to the relaunch as tomorrow...

Very interesting listening. Interesting how she is not afraid to say how dull she feels the channel is at the moment.

Is it me or does Rachel Attwell sound very much like a man?

I didn't know Steve Martin did LBC travel news, he's gone down in the world!

Yeah she did sound like a man!

Again I thought the interview was interesting, very good that she admitted that News 24 had faults and that this rebrand should put these right. It hopefully shpudl mean that they really do mean business this time and its the actual channel that is going to change and not just the look if the channel.

Top of The Pops Thread

I liked the studio was pretty good, wan't too sure about the features and competition bits though. I like the introduction the Blazin Squad, that was good. TOTO should really be aiming to get artists to do something a bit different, perhaps they could have a show on BBC Three where this could be used further perhaps doing unusual covers like Radio 1 tends to do.

Anyway I really wanna ask what song Kylie performed and if they said it would be her next single?

Cheers!

One thing that hasn't been discussed in this thread (at least not in the last 25 odd pages!) is whether the new graphics set includes a permanent ticker or temporary ticker or none at all?

My total quess would be that they will not have a ticker as it hasn't been mentioned in any of the articles and its a fairly major thing which I would have thought would have been mentioned.

The new set looks really good, well what we;ve seen of it, am looking forward to monday - thank God for flexi huh!

I suppose someone has to watch it!

Whether it's value for money as part of the license fee is totally debatable!

If I was English I would be VERY annoyed that the BBC in Wales dont just broadcast MORE regional programmes on BBC 1 and BBC 2 Wales but also have created a new 'channel' BBC 2W where even more money is wasted.

Surely the Welsh license fee payers should pay more money than their English counterparts?

Shall we ask the Assembly to have three extra hours in the day for Wales as well? You'd find it difficult just binning network BBC programmes in favour of another programme on sailing round the Lleyn.

As for the licence fee, England has 40 local radio stations and local websites, some places get several [unlike Cheshire, which has *none*]. More money may get spent in Wales compared to one of the micro-regions in England, but overall it can't be vastly different, per head.

I really don't understand the point on BBC 2W, its just made up of repeats of programmes on BBC One and Two Wales, which tend to be pretty rubbish anyway, or not worth a second viewing anyway.

The only good thing about 2W are the idents!

If Simon McCoy's going to be doing Breakfast when Dermot's away, then surely this means the end of Bill's occasional weeks with Natasha. I shouldn't imagine Mr Turnbull is too impressed with this apparent demotion to Fridays and weekends only (and nor am I for that matter).

The BBC Press Release actually says:

"Simon will deputise for Breakfast's existing male presenters, Dermot Murnaghan and Bill Turnbull, joining a team which also includes Natasha Kaplinsky and Sian Williams."

So, in fact it seems to imply that Dermot and Bill are equal to each other.

I don't think News 24 are 'desperate' for viewers, they may be beaten by Sky News but they still do well.

What they really lack at the momont is credibility and what this relaunch seems to be about is making the channel more watchable and more up-to-date.

As for the Auntie image, I can see that that can hold it back but look at Five Live compared with Radio Four, there is a difference and each appeals to a different group of people. What News 24 needs to do is do its own thing and stand out from the crowd, in the same way as both Five Live and R4 do.

I suspect though that whatever they do people will complain both on here and in the political scene etc.

I really hope this new look will be worth the wait.

The Politics Show

The BBC Wales opt-out is broadcast from the BBC's studio in the National Assembly builidng in Cardiff Bay, which is used for other political programmes on the BBC and S4C, but not the News.

The studio just part of the newsroom with a curtain that seperates the two, which the BBC have at the Assembly (along with a small gallery and a couple of radio studios.)

ITV Ratings and Schedule Crisis

A may be wrong on this but didn't the BBCs decision to move Trevor';s World of Sport actually help viewing figures?

I don't really support the idea of pulling things just because they don't make an impact straight away but re scheduling something can work if its done well and a move to 10.35 isn't as bad as 11.30 or whatever ITV have done.

The thing is ITV needs to get good ratings and if they don't then it loses them money, I guess thats the problem and I suppose it'll only get more common wth the increased pressure they will be under

Well, if you had to direct a viewer to a 2W programme, but at that point in time you were still BBC Two Wales, how would you do it? You can't point it as a different channel can you?

Which brilliantly illustrates how stupid it is to rebrand a channel within a channel for a couple of hours a night!

Why cant they just have a regional 'strand' rather than totally changing the station name?

Always baffled me that one!!!!!!!

I don't get BBC 2W either.

They either repeat shows that BBC One Wales have shown or they show them on BBC One Wales after they have 'premiered' on 2W. There are some other shows but they seem of a pretty poor standard.

I really don't get it.

And what happens when digital and analogue don't run together - ie, when the switch anyalogue off?

[quote="c@t]I do hope they just drop the "BBC" from it all and start calling it "News 24", it sounds so much better.

Why should they? The BBC make the channel, and so should have their name in the channel name. Would you prefer that ITV News Channel became the 'News Channel', and Sky News became 'News'?

No, don't try to be silly.

I'd much rather the ITV News Channel became the News Channel and BBC News 24 became News 24.

"Sky News" is two syllables. "BBC News 24" is seven. It's too wordy, too long, too awkward to say too often.

Five Live has been an enormous success without the presence of BBC branding, yet all those listening are well aware it is a BBC station.

I agree with C@t, I think they should call it 'News 24' more. The logo and dog could still be 'BBC News 24' in the same way as Five Live's logo still has BBC Radio on it, but the presenters would call it News 24. People would still see its a BBC channel.

Fame Academy - Alex Wins!

He is David number two which is why he really can't win.

He could go this week though if Alex gets saved by the viewers and Peter or Carolyn by the teachers then we only need the students not to vote for him and it'll all be OK.

Saying that I do like him and I do think he's talented but he's no Alex and he is too much like David
