The profit gained/viewer loss ratio

Not saying every viewer is fickle enough to switch off a channel just because of the ads, but if this was the case, I just wonder how many viewers ITV would be prepared to lose before they'd think of not showing the Crazy Frog ad.

In a way, if viewers actually did switch off due to the ad, Jamster wouldn't bother advertising, so it's a bit of a Catch 22. I suppose no-one can say that ITV isn't popular.

The profit gained/viewer loss ratio

Is this an anti-ITV thread in disguise? I agree that the advert is annoying though, but I wouldn't go as far as to say I'll be ditching ITV1 in the near future.

Not at all, I'm a staunch supporter of ITV1. I prefer its drama, its news presentation, local news outshines the BBC without question, and generally I like the feel of the channel.

It's just that, these 30 second chunks of crap used to be confined to sh!te music channels such as TMF and The Hits, but now they're on prime-time ITV1 - it's not right. They're unbelievably crap, they really are. And even on the adverts that do not involve the frog, it's something stupid like £2.50 for a boIIocks tone that sounds absolutely NOTHING like Little Britain. "Answer the phone, go on then - I don't like phones" - what utter sh!t, I wonder how long it took them to come up with that.

But without wanting to talk about the ringtones too much, it really is gutter stuff, and although some people place ITV's programmes in this "gutter" genre already, I do not.

However, I just feel that any more of these rubbish ads will just bring the general quality feel of the channel down to rock bottom, and maybe, subconciously, I'll start to join the anti-ITV bandwagon.

The profit gained/viewer loss ratio

I've just come back from football, and I came in, sat down - and my Mum was in the lounge. I heard the theme tune to The Bill in the background as it went into a break, and then the Crazy Frog advert came on.

Suddenly the old dear shouted "This bloody advert, turn the sound down Ian, this advert drives me nuts, I'm not going to watch ITV if I see this advert again".

Now, I'd see my mother as quite a sane figure - she's not one to lose her rag easily, so I just wonder how many more tempered people across the UK are thinking of ditching ITV1 because of this stupid advert?

I mean, how many people need to quit the channel before ITV will think twice about showing this kind of 30 second tripe?

Am I the only person to NOT find Lenny Henry funny?

Completely agree. I don't find him funny whatsoever. I try, I really do, but I just can't find him funny.

Election 2005 -Pre-Election discussion here

Please let's not make this into one of those nightmarish clique threads, that goes off at tangents, namedropping random members that only a select few have ever heard of.

I think this "worrying trend" probably prevents people like me contributing more often! However, it is not taken so personally though, as I'm quite happy jusy to read and be amused at the same 10 or 11 posters more than anything.

re: ITV Lunchtime News - does anyone have a capture or s(!)screenshots of this debacle? Sounded entertaining stuff.

I'm going to be watching it, for the only reason that I like large OB events.

Must agree with this, something very appealing about it. I take it this thread will be the place to be for Screenshots etc?

Election 2005 -Pre-Election discussion here

You must be if that's your idea of the definition of patronising...

Well unfortunately even with a Grammar School and University education I'm still none the wiser about how the hell the political system works, which is quite a shame considering I'm interested in it. Perhaps I need to take time out to learn about it, but then I can just choose to watch coverage which will explain as it broadcasts.

Thats why I like Alastair Stewart who recently picked up some award (God knows what it was), whenever news breaks, he manages to explain the stories behind the stories to the viewer in an engaging way.

I just feel that on BBC News 24, for example, there are often times they'll say "and now back to the something-or-other dossier story, and to our political correspondent.....", where they completely gloss over the foundation of the story.

Not being someone who is very "newsy", perhaps it's my own fault for not being in the know, however, i just find there are some channels that help to paint the picture better than others when it comes to the viewers it serves.

This is however not cursing the BBC's coverage, as it looks excellent, and there are many people I know that prefer it. It definitely beats ITV in terms of content, a comparison of the nightly bulletins will confirm that, however, I just want the news in a way I want it.

That's why I'm saying I'm sure each channel is targeting a different niché for this election, as that's what they do with their news. Each channel is using different ideas to accomplish this. Should be interesting which ones work and which don't.

I think it'll be the Beeb and Sky on the TVs, because ITV's coverage sounds like it is going to be targetted at possibly the most stupid viewers they can find. Cartoons and celebrities... wayhey.

Didn't Sky's coverage of one of the recent Budgets feature a key presenter wearing overalls? And aren't the BBC cartoonising their election promos?

I think essentially they're all as bad as each other!

I'm choosing ITV as they've got a very quick service from what I remember from the last election, and not being all that clued up with the logistics of politics myself, they'll explain stuff to me in a way I understand, unlike some other patronising channels which think I know everything. Or perhaps I'm just thick... Embarassed

Essentially, every element of the different channels' coverage has a slight niché market - and ITV's is the "average" viewer that is not a news junkie but wants the election details devliered in a format which doesn't bombard them with technical jargon. Thank God for Alastair Stewart!

I also can relate to presenters I know, and would feel pretty lost watching the BBC's coverage to be honest. The only reporters I know/have heard of for them, are Andrew Marr and Guto Harry (sp!).

Sky's Adam Boulton meanwhile, I have to agree, is superb.

People's Court UK

On the contrary I thought it was well presented, a great set, and easy to follow - however you're right, they shouldn't talk over each other - it's a court.

I see this having a limited shelf life.

ITV

I think the thing that annoys me the most about ITV today is the general 'feel' of the channel, especially between programming. Everytime I hear an announcer talking in a 'gossip-like manner' instead of formally introducing a programme, I want to punch somebody!

Got to agree about this. It annoys the hell out of me, especially the Scottish bloke and the girl with a weak voice who can barely be heard above the jingle.
