Jon Sopel's report on the inauguration for Wednesday night's BBC News at Ten:

Michelle made that in reference to her and Barack and their family. Nothing about the media. You overreaching a bit there.

I understood it related to Democrats in general.

Anyway, it's about being classy and I think Jake Tapper has been a bit disappointing today. Taking every opportunity to be petty and keep bashing Trump (almost bitter) with many personal remarks today, and I think it's inappropriately partisan on a momentous day. He's whining that Trump isn't attending, but would equally be whining if he had turned up.

He could easily save it up for any other night of the week. I think it detracts from what should just be treated as a historical day.

Those who got their promotions get to use their new titles today, Kaitlan Collins doing her first live as Chief WH Correspondent.

Former Chief WH Correspondent, Jim Acosta was on Air Force One to Florida with Trump and other press, no doubt trying to get under his skin right until the end.

No sign of a "when they go low, we go high" mantra today re Trump leaving.

Tapper: "Disgraced", Bash:"Small, little man", Blitzer: "Pathetic, tiny little crowd to say goodbye", Jones: "Think of the Muslims right now!"

We all know Trump was worse than awful but they aren't half laying it on thick with this commentary.

At the risk of repeating myself, I think the heavily-opinionated hosts will have to become less outraged once the focus is on a new administration. Other than the upcoming senate impeachment trial (if it happens), they will quickly run out of content as the world is moving on and there isn't a constant stream of new Trump tweets to be outraged about. They can't keep running footage of the storming of the Capitol forever.

I just can't see Cuomo and Lemon having nuanced conversations about healthcare policy or business tax rates. Either they leave or change direction somehow?

It felt more like Don framed it around Don!

Yes, the passage he read didn't feel particularly profound to me, but I guess the whole exercise is primarily to feed the ego. I expect guest appearances on late night and talk shows are in the works.

Should CNN have allowed him to promote his book in this way?

Well, they can of course do what they like and promotion is allowed. They frequently flash up the books being sold by commentators and contributors, even Dr. Sanjay Gupta gets a book plug before he talks about Covid these days.

Don framed this around racial injustice and it's obviously a talking point on Martin Luther King Day, so I guess people will be forgiving.

Makes a change from a monologue about Trump, I suppose.

(Something I felt less comfortable with recently was Jon Sopel mentioning his new book at the the end of the BBC Americast podcast last week, even in a jokey "we don't have time to talk about it" way, but they did and mentioned the title.)

Don’s big announcement? He wrote a book, titled “This is the Fire: What I say to my Friends about Racism”.

"...and now the news at 10pm: My new book! and it's going to help heal America. "

Haha, they let him talk about it for a full 15 minutes. Even I'm a bit surprised.

I've not had an issue with there being so much domestic coverage of late, but I agree that it seems odd they can't even manage to bring back the short 'News Now' updates (formerly World Headlines) for international viewers. It might get messy opting in/out at the top of the hour, but there seem to be plenty generic filler breaks they could slot into.

Maybe it's just too much effort for an audience that doesn't miss it..?

That's The Situation Room finishing up the weekend specials, apparently they only thought they'd do them for a few weeks but, well, news.

As for the other things, I think all domestic presenters are guilty of becoming more opinionated over the last few years. John King, Abby Phillip and people like Jim Sciutto are the most sensible/least dramatic. At the other end of the scale, the biggest ego by far is Chris Cuomo. I can't see him sticking around for long into a Biden presidency, tbh. He just wants to opine about "ReTrumplicans" (his witty word) night after night... ugh.

As for Don's announcement, pure speculation but they did have Laura Coates hosting the first hour of CNN Tonight back in November so maybe that's something to do with it? As it stands, domestic broadcasts from 4pm to midnight live Mon-Fri with only one hour hosted by a female anchor. Maybe they want to address that - the weekend political shows will have more permanent female hosting from next week.
