Pope's Death

Snu posted:
This is the moment the Fox News Channel will quickly want to forget from its coverage of the Pope's health.

Indeed, but we weren't the only ones to notice.
Turns out that back in the US, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central picked up on Fox's slight error. See the clip below! Very Happy

Right Click and Save Target As 'comedy-central.zip' (4.55 MB)

(It was streamed on their website, but the streaming there is worse than crap so I chopped it up to get the relevent bit).

From reading some stuff in other places... it works like this...

There is one video stream (carrying 2 hour chunks of various channels) with an MHEG overlay. The application gives you a randomly generated code number. You phone a number which costs you £1 and then enter that code. That code is decrypted into another number, which you then enter into the MHEG application. This will effectively remove the MHEG layer allowing you to view the video.

Clearly then if you turn off the box it will generate a new code number the next time you tune to that channel, but will it not also generate a new number if you change channel?!

It's ingenious, I'll give them that, but I don't think it's something that will work - apart from anything else I suspect the code could be quite easily cracked - though why you'd bother cracking it I don't know as the offerings (2 hour chunks of the Top-Up TV Channels) aren't worth the hassle.

So this is also how the Red Hot channel (No. 61 on Freeview) works then? It's a bit weird, but if you're going to pay £5.99 for one night's soft porn there must be something wrong with you. Plus the 10 minute preview never really inspired me to sign up. It's not very glamourous looking (especially the 'older' ladies. Eww.)

It's still quite amusing flicking through the channels because you can still hear the sound on this Red Hot thing, and it's all panting and groaning. I guess you could turn it up loud every night to p**s off the neighbours.

Mind you.. if the code was really easy to crack, then I doubt I'd say no to some free viewing.

Flashmob - The Opera

It's back! I missed the last one, but it looked pretty impressive so I'll be watching tonight for sure. Obviously they can't give away too many details of the location (though I guess OB trucks and an orchestra must be quite hard to hide). The only clue the website gives is that it's happening somewhere in Sheffield.

The production standards last time looked really good, so I'm looking forward to it. I did think it would've been trailed more heavily across the BBC. I only found out through a chance visit to the website.

If you're going to be nearby you can still sign up by txt to be part of the mob.

More on the BBC THREE website.

They had a lovely piece from Milton Keynes on how WORM-like technology works- I personally think it's quite an interesting concept for viewers as long as the panel size is reasonable enough to make it worthwhile.

Well, thanks to everyone who explained it to me.
I do recall CBS were streaming a graph on their website during the Presidential Election debates but never realised that this was known as using 'WORM'. Cheers.

ITV News Channel- Why Bother?

Andrew posted:
Newsman posted:
ITV News is a commercial channel. To be fair, ITV News Channel is dragging in the ratings behind Sky News and BBC News 24. BUT... ITV NC is almost five years old whilst BBC News is seven years and Sky News is 16 years, .

ITV News Channel is only 2 and half years old. If you counting when the ITN NC started then can we count the start of BBC World as the start of News 24?!

Maybe we should start counting backwards seeing as a huge number of Freeviewers can't see it? Hopefully it might disappear altogether.

It's quite obvious that this thread is only for anti-ITV people to slag it off, most of what has been said is just opinions "the graphics look cheap and tacky"

People would tend to comment on graphics in a TV presentation forum. Most arguments, I thought, were pretty well balanced.
You're not pro-ITV by any chance are you?

Oh....

Anyway, I don't see why anyone really takes sides. I used to be of the view that BBC News was best, and still watch it when I want some analysis. But I like Sky as it's pacy and easy to have on in the background. Plus they do break news pretty fast. Keep an open mind. Plus, feel free to change your opinion sometimes. (ie. stop defending the ITV News Channel.)

I've never heard of any of these terms?! Where have they come from?

Might as well have.
I feel we're seeing the results of some 'blue sky thinking' meetings by Sky News. Seems they are trying to come up with as many gimmicks and 'features' as possible.

Already trailed: "Sky Across Britain", "Sky Interest Index", "The Boulton Factor", "If I Were PM" with top public figures, "Daily Swing Seat" and the worm-polling. Geez. Lingo galore.
(EDIT - Of course, there's the "Reality Check" as well.)

At least the ticker's not burning "Jackson Trial Reconstruction" into my eyes continuously any longer.

Okay, a couple of questions.

What's the Sky News Interest Index (which they seem to assume we're all already really familiar with)?

Scottish have put up this effort on their website:

Hope the logo looks a bit better on screen.

I guess they'll probably be doing shared analysis with Grampian (would make sense really).

There was a hell of a lot of background noise, and yes, everytime another bus passes, you are of course level with the passengers on the upper deck.

Just to illustrate Wink

Don't like these N24 efforts.
Hope they're not going to be a template for various others.

50 Greatest Sketches

Hymagumba posted:
the show itself was appauling though as it hacked the sketches to bits and reoved all humour from them.

I agree. They would whizz through some of the clips (often not showing them in full) yet concentrate on about four 'talking heads' for each clip all making the same points and explaining why it's *so* funny.

My head was starting to buzz after an hour or so becuase of the sheer volume of analysis. "It's funny because Andy is in a wheelchair, but can actually walk. Lou does not know this.. blah blah."

It was a bit insulting to anyone who actually has a sense of humour and could understand why the sketches were funny for themselves. Also, only a couple of people actually said they didn't like one of the aritsts. In this case it was Avid Merrion. It would've been a bit more refreshing if not everyone on the show loved every single sketch so much that it was the funniest thing ever written until the next sketch. Became a bit tiresome really.

In retrospect, I guess I could've watched something else. These shows are strangely addictive, aren't they?
