Al Jazeera English | Refresh 2020

Looks to be a very basic virtual setup — no tracked movements in three-dimensional space. Just a basic background chroma key.

There is more than a basic chroma key going on there - as there are background reflections in the desk that match a realistic desk reflection of the background (rather than seeing more of the background cut through the desk)

Either the backings have all been designed statically but with built in desk reflections that demand precise camera framing - or there is more than just basic chroma key going on.

Naga Munchetty | BBC DG Overturns Ruling

Ofcom have also published their correspondence with the BBC over the matter - some of it from Kevin Bakhurst, a former bigwig in BBC News, and now director of content and media policy at Ofcom.

Yes, Kevin is a former Editor of the Ten O'Clock News, and I think was the editor who relaunched BBC News 24 as the BBC News Channel, before moving to RTÉ where he was Head of News and Current Affairs and latterly Deputy DG I believe.

Ah, so he's to blame.

I didn't say he took the decision to rebrand the channel - just that he was the editor who relaunched it with the new name...

Good Morning Britain

The BBC World News Thread

Such a pointless change. Business Live was far punchier.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00098kc/worklife-07102019

My guess is that audience research suggested that Business Live felt too 'hard business' and was appealing to too narrow an audience. Softening the approach may well be an experiment to see if a wider audience can be appealed to ?

Good Morning Britain

I would expect Ms Arcuri to have been paid handsomely for this interview (which is something Breakfast wouldn't be able to do) so they want to maximise their investment...

Presumably she knows that if she confirms or denies a relationship, that will reduce her value to other news outlets who will buy stories. She's going to maximise her income and her time in the public eye I suspect - and is no doubt waiting for a decent sum from a tabloid still?

Studio 14: Being used temporarily (started yesterday). Will still be used for Inside Story, Counting the Cost, and Planet SOS.

Studio 12: this studio has been out of commission for a while. Formerly used for Inside Story and Counting the Cost a few years ago. It's being turned into a virtual studio... similar to ITV News and BBC News’ Studio A, where only the desk is real (in fact, it's the one from Studio 11) but everything else is virtual. It will LOOK like Studio 11.

This will be used until the real Studio 11 is done, with Studio 14 as a backup.

Although there will we new graphics and visual packages, I’m not sure if the AJE music will be updated or refreshed. I quite like the music as it is, to be honest.

Am I understanding correctly that the new look will be premiered, then, as a ‘temporary’ virtual studio first? That’s fairly unusual isn’t it – usually it’s a temporary studio with the OLD look, not the new one. Of course, I’m quite possibly reading this wrong – in which case, apologies.

Doesn't the above post say the VR studio will be using the desk from Studio 11? That sounds to me like the VR studio will be emulating the old/current look?

Astra 28.2 8K test

Just had another try I got an IP feed of it and VLC was able to read the video it is SDR strangely.

Yes - it's odd. The content seems to be identical in editorial terms (violin workshop etc.) but last time it was Rec 2020 HLG HDR , this time it's Rec 709 SDR.

Are there any 8K TVs on sale that don't support Rec 2020 HLG?

The decline of BBC News online

On the BBC News front page, two of the stories currently on offer

A story that you’d usually find in a local rag

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-49941400

Given the recent allergies cases that have caused changes to major food chains' policies, it strikes me that is a very valid news story, with wider interest than just East Kent. It was published on a BBC local news page, and I guess it was picked up by the national front page because it was of wider interest....

Peacock ....

The vast majority of users though, are on Roku based devices, adding confusion with a switch of 'home platform' will take years to settle, consider the move from BTTV branded boxes to BT YouView and the multiple years of dual running. Moving NowTV doesn't really have a technical reason, as BT did, as well. Now TV Roku boxes and sticks are user property too, albeit cheap, people will object if the service was discontinued on the devices they've bought. As I said SkyX is the, in my view, only move to initiate such a change.

I think you're missing my point. There is no reason why you can't support multiple platforms relatively easily if you have a well implemented API or similar platform. My point is that you don't have to assume that Sky will continue to be fully Roku based, but that doesn't mean they'd have to deprecate their existing Roku users.

Well they got more than a million people watching so that don’t surprise me.

Yep - though their ratings aren't as high as you might expect for a country with a population of 5x that of the UK. The US morning shows rate less than 4m at the moment. (Pro rata for population that's not far away from what GMB gets, and a lot lower than Breakfast)

The ratings for the five main US networks are much lower in general per capita as compared to the five main UK channels.

Yes - that was kind of my point.

International News Presentation: Past and Present

I always like it when broadcasters recreate old sets using VR.

ZDF's Heute Journal did something similar for its 40th anniversary:
