2019 General Christmas election.

Do they still need lots of journalists and number crunchers on set in 2019? It's not as if they're gathering the information and handing bits of paper to the presenters these days. Most of the work takes place in the hub and as has happened recently this can be miles from where the presentation is happening.

AIUI the Hub is really only used for outside source production - it isn't used for results production and show production, nor for the teams working on the psephology aspects of the show. One of the major benefits of the TC1/Elstree D set was that it avoided needing lots of temporary office space for these roles. They still need to be housed somewhere if they aren't in the studio (and don't have space in the hub) - but they don't need to be physically within a studio (or even the same building I guess)

Quote:

The Elstree hub is permanant, as was I believe the one at TV Centre. Some bits of equipment are hired in as they're too expensive to have sitting around for months

Yes - some elements are permanent - but there is still, AIUI, a lot of bespoke rigging to be done and kit installed. It's still a non-trivial exercise, even though the space is permanent.

X Factor

Cando posted:

500k an hour was not huge even by 2012 especially for a massive shiny floor show. Around what The Apprentice cost back then and less than what Strictly did as the show was mainly pre recorded in chunks.

At the time the format purchase costs got a significant amount of negative press, and it became clear that the BBC wouldn't be in the market for another big-ticket format rights purchase any time soon, and instead would be more likely to develop or commission new formats.

Politically it might be toxic for the BBC to do so.

Yeah, nothing is as politically toxic as showing a frivolous talent show. Hell, this could lead to the abolition of the license fee.

Just the poaching from ITV - remember how much criticism airing the Voice got the BBC. Oddly Syco made Greatest Dancer did not get the criticism.

The Voice was a case of spending a huge amount of money buying a format (that I suspect other broadcasters were also interested in - as confirmed by ITV taking over the rights) - separate to the production fees of the indie who made it.

I don't think there were huge format rights costs of the same magnitude for 'The Greatest Dancer' - that was just a production commission from Syco in reality.

What about shows that may already be booked in there... It may not be that simple.

The Sport Thread

Assume we'll never get ratings for Amazon coverage but suspect the audience has pretty much collapsed for the ATP.

Would be interesting to compare the number of BT Sport subscribers with the number of Amazon Prime subscribers (though lots of the latter go nowhere near the streaming video proposition I suspect)

In reality I suspect Amazon not having a channel on Sky and Virgin means viewing is much more deliberate than BT Sport on a linear TV channel where you may surf through and stay. In behaviour terms, OTT for a single channel is a very different viewing pattern.

Brexit Dramarama

Why is the 12th completely out of the question, but the 9th is perfectly fine? I assume they are all just playing silly buggers.

A couple of reasons I believe. They include the following - but others also probably also apply.

A later date could still allow for passage of the Brexit bill potentially I believe, plus the later in December the election is held, the fewer students will still be in their university towns, which benefits Labour and Lib Dem candidates more than Tory.

AppleTV 4K and Apple Video Services.

Of course the Sony, could be sending a I don’t understand you silly Roku message back, which then countermands the HDR manual setting, without telling me, but that’s taking technical tautology to almost B***** they extremes.

Yes - that's how EDID is supposed to work, and usually does. The only time I've got a Roku SS+ to output HDR to an SDR TV has been when watching iPlayer UHD stuff. (Desaturated and slightly odd highlights as per a Rec 2020 HLG EOTF signal displayed on a Rec 709 display in SDR)

Netflix and Amazon stuff has only been the SDR stream when watching shows that would normally be available in HDR on an SDR display.

AppleTV 4K and Apple Video Services.

The Roku is manually forced, overriding the automatic setting, to send 4K HDR to the Sony Bravia, which is taking the content in that format onboard and displaying the content wonderfully. I presume the Bravia is doing any processing required to display the alien content.

That's unusual - I didn't think SDR TVs currently on sale would accept Rec 2020 and ST.2084 content and do anything sensible with them (like tonemapping/gamut conversion). (Though there are 1080p HDR Sony TVs on sale now that will happily display that format in HD, but they won't accept it in 4K AFAIK)

I've got a SS+ - I'll have a play on my non-HDR Sony UHD TV when I get a chance. (I know that the Roku will output iPlayer UHD HLG HDR stuff on HD SDR displays without conversion - but because it's HLG the EOTF doesn't cause many issues as it's backwards compatible, but the Rec 2020 gamut displayed Rec 709 looks very off)

AppleTV 4K and Apple Video Services.

Back to Apple TV being an App on Roku.

Tested this out with 'Wonders of the Monsoon' EP1 tonight which is a HD programme, I'm sending 4K HDR from the Roku SS+ to my non HDR Sony Bravia, so upscaling on the SS+. Dare I say that it's looking better than the same programme on AppleTV4K. Stunning video.

I suspect that the usual practice of Roku sending brighter and heavier contrast at base level is helping. There's still some horizontal judder on horizontal pans which has to be looked at carefully to notice too.

I don't understand "I'm sending 4K HDR from the Roku SS+ to my non HDR Sony Bravia"? What do you mean? Do you mean your Roku is letting you play HDR content to an SDR display and the Roku is tone mapping down to SDR, or that your TV is tone mapping down to SDR, or that you are watching an HDR Rec 2020 gamut / ST.2084 EOTF (i.e. HDR10) video output unprocessed on a Rec 709 BT.1886 (or 2.2/2.4 Power Law gamma) SDR display? (The latter would look flat, desaturated and with very odd black and white levels)

LBC News Discussion

Does anyone know what the bitrate/codec is for Global Player’s ‘HD Audio’ streams? I assume they’re better quality than 128k MP3.

Music stations, 48kbps AAC+ non HQ, HQ 128kbps MP3.
LBC - 48k regardless of format.
LBC London News - As above, however the new LBC News will have a UK 128kbps feed.

If these are the bitrates for online streams - then they contrast poorly with the 320k AAC of BBC radio streams online.
London Lite and Colorman gave kudos

I wonder if Strictly will go back to a Saturday results show too?

Strictly only copied X Factor to compete with it in the schedules. A live results show would also help combat spoilers.

I think the ratings boost on Sundays for BBC One is still a very strong reason for the BBC One team to keep a Sunday results show. (Countryfile, Antiques Roadshow and Strictly Results are a really strong block)
