Peston On Sunday

It seems like a 'big interaction screen' is going to be used and Allegra seems like the host of that. Very much makes me think of Emily at her election screen...

Or Tommy Sandu on Sunday Morning Live?

Channel 5 general discussion

Looks like the EPG on Freesat doesn't use the main channel ID then?

Is there an easier way to get TV recordings to a hard drive?

Just wondering if many people use MediaPortal. I discovered it a while back and it looks very confusing to set up with a TV signal but has the benefit of recording two programmes at the same time if they're on the same multiplex. Any advice?

I didn't really play with TV Portal much. I prefer TV Headend running on cheap Linux platforms. It also happily only uses one tuner to record more than one channel on the same mux. Or you can multicast entire muxes using mumudvb or dvblast (though unicast better for Wifi...)

It has changed on the Freesat EPG back to Channel 5 HD with the space. I imagine Sky isn't far behind now...

I think the ID 'packet' is common to Sky and Freesat platforms, because it's part of the basic DVB-S spec, rather than the proprietary bolt ons that both platforms use ? Might require a re-boot of the Sky box ?

Yep - AIUI the Channel ID is the same on all platforms for a given DVB stream. It's only the extended EPG that is delivered via different routes on Sky and Freesat (though the two platforms also handle subtitles differently too)

Eurovision 2016

I've been looking at this: http://www.eurovision.tv/upload/2016/press/SVT_ESC2016_MediaGuidelines_MediaActivities_0428.pdf

Have a look at Friday 13th, and you will see that it says Grand Final Rehearsal 2, not Grand Final Jury show that is normally placed in that slot. It confuses me because if the juries are voting then, it should be called Grand Final Jury show, not another rehearsal. Anyone clarify this?

The Friday evening Dress Rehearsal 2 is still the Jury voting show I believe. It's the last "Dress" Rehearsal. Historically the Grand Final Family Show in the early afternoon on Saturday is a non-Dress Rehearsal (where presenters and performers don't have to wear full costume, hair and make-up and often perform in casual clothes, so it's not a 'Dress' rehearsal)

I suspect the Dress Rehearsal 2 / Jury Show equivalence is taken as read. If you look at the SF rehearsal schedules there is a SF rehearsal 1 and 3 with the Jury Rehearsal occupying the same slot as Dress Rehearsal 2. I think they are the same things, it's just in the schedule they have swapped which way they describe them between the SFs and GF.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it...

The Sport Thread

Any increase in sport on FTA television can only be a good thing IMO, even if it is on Dave. But as the Breakfast one says (Wink) it actually suits a channel like Dave rather than relying on Top Gear reruns all the time.

And Dave is only FTA on Freeview in SD isn't it? On satellite it's pay-TV on Sky for both SD and HD versions. So no FTA on satellite and no FTA HD anywhere.

Everybody has access to Freeview one way or another if the TV has it, or you have a box or whatever. The resolution of the picture doesn't change the basic fact Dave is technically FTA through Freeview. We're not all interested in UHD/4k or even HD for that matter.

Not everyone has access to Freeview. Dave is on a COM mux, which has less coverage than the PSB Freeview-lite muxes. And there are quite a lot of CATV systems that switched from terrestrial to satellite at (or before) DSO. Lots of people have Freeview. But not everyone.

For satellite only homes, Dave is not FTA.

Dave is also FTA on TV Player, alas in SD.

Presumably because TV Player is a loophole isn't it? (It treats itself as a cable equivalent carrying FTA - Freeview I think - channels)

The hell is that camera body?

Looks like one of those Canon DSLRs designed for video (C300?) with a iPad based TelePrompTer hood on it.

The C300 isn't an SLR (i.e. single lens reflex) design, instead it's Canon's answer to those who wanted a DSLR look but at broadcast quality.

It's a compact video camera with a single, large, sensor and thus delivers the shallow-depth-of-field look, and allows you to use prime lenses (as well as photographic zooms), but without the compromises you get with most DSLRs when it comes to pixel-binning (which causes aliasing/moiré) and poor quality codecs that don't meet broadcast specs. (Plus it doesn't have the EU recording limits and seldom overheats...)

C300s are the work-horses of factual production at the middle-range of the broadcast range (and capable of excellent results), sitting below the Sony F55 and Arri Amira (which are used at the higher-end), and above the XF305.

Certainly nothing to apologise about if you're shooting a show like Points of View on a C300.

The C300 Mk II meets EBU Tier 1 for HD production and Tier 2 for 4K. I think the original C300 meets the original Tier LS that is Tier 1 HD production for Large Sensor cameras.

Is it just me that thinks the Points of View and One Show (studio) end graphics could look more visually pleasing. They seem a bit messy.

I appreciate sustainability is important to the producers, but I don't think the "albert+" badge is doing much for the viewers. You don't see "The BBC is an equal opportunities employer" or whatever at the end, so I don't think this logo is really needed. In fact, when I first saw it I assumed it was a production company/partner or something.

I think the difference is that the BBC is an equal opportunities employer across the corporation. Only some productions are meeting Albert+, and those that do get the logo. Hopefully once all productions meet it, then it will be redundant.

BBC News 24 1997-1999

DTV posted:
One aspect of the flags look did actually last right through to 2013 - the World Business Report music. The music may have been remixed in 2000, but it was the same tune as it was in 1997.

There's one bit that has lasted longer and is still on-air I think. Dateline London was a launch show ('Dateline London with Charles Wheeler') and I think it retains the original 1997 music. Charles is much missed. Amazing bloke.

I'm more confused about why Points of View has a BBC Northern Ireland credit. Is it actually made in Belfast now?

It has been made by a BBC Northern Ireland production team based in Belfast for a while now, but Jeremy's links are shot in London. (Just like Sunday Morning Live is made in The One Show studio in London by a BBC Northern Ireland team)
