North American Affilliates/Network Set Design

Could it be the audience are their for the DWTS announcements. I can imagine you'd want some studio atmosphere for that kind of item.

2016 Paralympic Games

Looks like the US coverage is anchored (think of the Bob Costas segments opening/closing Primetime) back in Stamford but with crews on the ground. I'm not sure where the the opening ceremony commentary was called from.

C4 are all on-site in Rio, pretty much like the BBC. They presented in-vision from the Maracana stadium for the opening ceremony last night, and are in their studio in Rio for main presentation, with reporters trackside/poolside etc.

They are anchoring athletics in-vision from the same stadium position today, with a presenter and guests.

I think C4 are very keen not to send a message that the Paralympics are 'second best' - and are keen to send a message of equality, working within the parameters of what OBS can provide (I think OBS are also host broadcaster for Paralympics) We have the usual multiple live & catch-up web streams in addition to live TV on Channel 4 and More4

The BBC had loggers in Salford in the UK - not sure whether Sunset and Vine are doing the same (S&V are C4's chosen production company for Paralympics coverage - as C4 doesn't have a production arm. In 2012 it was a joint operation between S&V and IMG)

I think many other European broadcasters are anchoring from back at home - with just reporters in the venues (possibly even off-tube commentary from back at base)

NOW TV

Been playing, still find the interface illogical but am impressed. It's iInteresting that the Smart Box rendering of Freeview SD channels is exceptional, and beats my 4K Bravia and YouView tuners.

How odd - MPEG2 is MPEG2 all decoders should deliver pretty much identical results give or take some maths truncation. Either the Smart Box or your Bravia are doing some additional post-processing which is making stuff better or worse...

The C4 beach studio looks familiar...

Did you watch Japanese TV then?

AIUI C4 are using the control room facilities previously used by the BBC at the IBC, but are using a studio previous used by a Japanese broadcaster (not the BBC) off-site.

London Live

mark posted:
My understanding is certainly that they do have limited live presentation on NY1 - but not all the time.

I'd like to think that Ofcom wouldn't stand in the way of a channel like London Live replacing live news with innovative 'jukebox' output if it meant an improved service. Clearly in London Live's case there's a slight issue with the name - although a relatively moot point given how little live output they have anyway.

My point wasn't about Ofcom - it was that the original suggestion that generating 5 hours of live news each day would be a good fit for the NY1 model. Which isn't live news.

London Live

mark posted:
NY1 and many of the local news channels in US run a tight wheel format and I believe they use a digital video jukebox system. Part of the program is looped and new segments are inserted continually throughout the day. Breaking news and the morning program are fully live. Updated weather and other news stories are added as they occur and inserted constantly throughout the day. To keep the channel cost effective they are usually single presenter broadcasts.

Yep - NY1 is a very efficiently-run channel. For anyone not familiar with it, it's certainly not the kind of lavish affair we're used to from US news channels - the set is pretty basic, for example. The information is very much the star of the show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGKcqd-CP_4

With the right kind of thinking, output like this might have been possible for London Live. One of the many, many issues, though, is that the thinking behind the channel has been very old-school. Their original Head of News, for example, came from a well-financed linear news channel rather than somewhere that delivers great things on a tighter budget.

If I was setting up a channel that needed to deliver 5 hours of live news a day on a limited budget, I'd be recruiting people with experience running similar channels. You'd think that would be a no-brainer.

Isn't NY1 pretty much entirely pre-recorded? ISTR that they have a playout operation, which plays out pre-recorded links and inserts on a loop. They were early users of Omnibus Systems playout gear, like Columbus, to do this (late 90s?)

Or have they now gone for live presentation. The pre-recorded structure was more cost effective for them, as the anchors could produce their own content, record it, then produce more content, and only had to read the story once.

If it were live on a repeating basis, the anchors would have had to read the story multiple times, and someone else would have needed to write the content.

Whilst NY1 may be a good model for local news, it may not be a good model for local live news, unless their production model has changed.

International News Presentation: Past and Present

WDR, Germany; regional news from a temporary set in the foyer of WDR's facilities in Dusseldorf while a new "giant" news set is being built:

Nicely done for a temporary set-up. The Germans appear to have very healthy funding for their PSBs. (That temporary set-up looks - though doesn't sound - better than most BBC and ITV regional news permanent set-ups, though they are obviously experiencing some 'window' issues...)

International News Presentation: Past and Present

It's been a while since the revamped Studio S2 in STV (Shanghai Television in Shanghai, China, not to mess up with Scotland TV) Mansion debuted. Six daily news programs in STV News & General Channel (local channel) have moved into the new studio. Motion Magic, a subsidiary of SMG (Shanghai Media Group) cooperated with N3 Design of Moscow, Russia to create intros for these programs.

The following are news themes for five news programs.
Good Morning Shanghai (morning Mandarin news program debuted on February 1, 1993)
moved into Studio S2 on April 18, 2016

Shanghai Noon (midday Mandarin news program debuted in 1984)
moved into Studio S2 on March 28, 2016

News Town (Xin Wen Fang in Chinese pinyin, evening Mandarin and Shanghaiese news program debuted on January 1, 2002)
moved into Studio S2 on January 18, 2016

News Report (prime time Mandarin news program debuted on October 1, 1958)
moved into Studio S2 on June 6, 2016

Nightly News (or News Night, night Mandarin news program debuted on January 1, 2007, merging two previous night news programs)
moved into Studio S2 on May 3, 2016
News Theme - Version 1

News Theme - Version 2

The music is similar to Central News:

Perhaps it's been sampled from the library track?

Definitely feels like a 'lift' from the Central News theme - though whether it's a sample or a sound-a-like rearrangement I'm not qualified to tell. The quality of the YouTube rips make it tricky too - but it does sound a bit 'off' around the Central-y bits...

Eamonn Holmes to leave Sky News

Let the speculation on his replacement begin!

I would guess they'll get the chequebook out and look elsewhere - other than Dermot Murnaghan or Kay Burley, I don't really think they've got anyone big enough take it on.

Given the cost cutting at Sky News at the moment - I wonder if that is as likely as it once was... Sure they may well recruit from outside Sky - but whether it will be a 'star signing' in the same way - I'm not so sure.

Good Morning Britain - 2015 Refresh/Tweaks

When Susanna jumped ship to ITV for Good Morning Britain, wasn't there talk about her doing other stuff (possibly a factual show) for the channel? Did anything come of it?

New Meridian, BBC South & South East Thread

Are the English regions's subtitles live captioned or taken from the ENPS/TelePrompTer feed? I ask because in the US you see the most delay (and some times dozens of lines of automation codes) when a station takes the TelePrompTer output vs having it transcribed professionally.

The script in ENPS is available to the subtitler - but VTs and live interviews have to be transcribed by an operator 'live'. (These days via ReSpeak but previously stenographically)

The scripts for the national news are put into the subtitler though, aren't they?

Yes - the script for the studio links into VTs and into interviews (and which will appear on prompt) is in ENPS and thus available to the subtitler. ENPS is the Electronic News Production System that BBC News use to script their shows.
