BBC loses Great British Bake Off

A number of users on Twitter reporting of terse exchanges between James Purcell and Jay Hunt at the RTS conference today with Jay Hunt essentially blaming the BBC for allowing its relationship with Love to deteriorate so badly.

I haven't read a good word about Love or Jay Hunt on Twitter from former employees so perhaps the pair are well suited.

Because Twitter is a really reliable medium that gives you all sides to a story... I'm always wary of 'former employees' views. The fact that they are former can often mean they have an axe to grind...

"BBC World" Ident

Off topic a bit but a PBS channel in the states showed the balloon ident with original music when introducing Keeping up appearances. Had old BBC America ident.

Sounds like the BBC America balloon ident was edited onto the master as delivered?

Coronation Street

Not sure I agree. I doubt an Irish or British actor would have been 'given a good talking to' if the tweets had been about Northern Ireland and similarly offensive. Kashmir is a highly contentious subject for India and Pakistan. Anyone tweeting about it would know the impact their posts would have.

I don't think this is political correctness, particularly if you read the tweets in question.

BBC Holographic TV

Can't see this mentioned anywhere but nice to see some classic idents taking centre stage.

That looks like 4 modified prompt glasses mounted above a single large display with custom rendered content... Hence the quotes around 'holographic' I guess - as no holography involved...

International News Presentation: Past and Present

Certainly in the UK we've seen a downsizing from such things now.

Not sure what you mean?

If you're talking about BBC and ITV regional production centres moving to smaller studios, this is not really related to news production. It's more related to a move to location rather than studio production for non-news regional content, and ITV's regional franchise structure being consolidated (so rather than every ITV regional centre having network production facilities to make drama, music, entertainment etc. shows there is now no need for them)

Crimewatch with Jeremy Vine and Tina Daheley

As I understand it as of now TC2 will be used for set storage. There is no permanent control room planned only 1 & 3 are to have money spent on the refit. Things change from month to month so its a wait and see.

Have heard that - but also heard other rumblings. Sharing a control room with TC1 or 3 would also make sense.

After all TC2 was never really properly upgraded to HD - and relied on rigging additional HD gear in it for much of its life. Shows booked into TC2 would regularly move to the HD TC4 if it was available because it avoided the requirement for installing the rented in HD gear, saving S&PP money, and was a nicer space for production to work in. (The other small studios TC5 and 7 were never HD)

I'm sure the option of parking a scanner to allow all three studios to run simultaneously would also be an option, as it is in PQ where they have more studios than galleries.

However being a small studio (relatively speaking) it almost certainly won't get the level of demand that TC3 gets.

Quite surprised they're launching a Scottish, UK and international news service, however, I thought the BBC would get in there first and STV would play catchup.

Will they have access to any ITV News/ITN content on this show though, given that it is going out on a non-ITV outlet? Will be interesting to see how they make it.

Yes, it says that they will use the resources of STV News and ITV News Worldwide. As STV 2 is not part of the ITV network, I take it STV have negotiated a deal with ITV to use their news gathering resource.

Yes - on re-reading it they talk about ITV News resources UK and Worldwide. Wonder what kind of deal they have done with ITV plc and/or ITN for this, and how extensive their access will be.

Interesting development...

STV to launch integrated Scottish and International news programme. Also renaming the local channels to STV2.

http://stv.tv/news/scotland/1367651-stv-to-launch-integrated-scottish-and-international-news-show/

Will STV 2 be available to all of Scotland? Or just the mentioned cities?

It's just a rename of the existing STV run local franchises - so if you receive one of those you'll just see it renamed STV2. They aren't putting it on PSB2 AFAIK (not sure they can) If you can get one of the current STV Local services on satellite or cable, you'll get the renamed version.

Crimewatch with Jeremy Vine and Tina Daheley

The Merton operation rebranded as Wimbledon studios didn't it. They had a small amount of success, but then closed. It was expected that the site would be repurposed, but unusually a Persian broadcaster, who had made shows there, decided to take over at least some of the site and make shows there. (Tricky to make shows in Iran...)

It must be a pain to set up all the telephony on location each week. They would be better off filming it in a police station incident room.

You'd need a "clean" Incident Room - police are not keen on evidence / photos and the like being spotted on TV.
I suppose they could dress up a press conference to look a bit more interesting.
Phone centre comms are not a problem as they don't take any live callers - they'd just pass on information as they do now.

Ah yes I was thinking more along the lines of a training facility maybe.

Suspect finding such a location that can guarantee not to be used 1 day a week may be a struggle.

They could move the operation to Pacific Quay in Glasgow or MediacityUK in Salford if there is a concern for studio space. TVC's remaining three studios should be opening back up for use in a years time so they're always an option but granted three is not many.'

Crimewatch used to be one of the few shows, along with Watchdog and Strictly It Takes Two, to be small enough to fit into TC2...

As many have repeatedly said before, whilst it may be technically true that TVC is reopening with 3 studios, they are the wrong 3... (But the 3 that remain are very convenient for carving the building up) TC2 is far too small to be useful for the majority of studio shows the BBC curently make - and TC1 is great, but far too big for most shows. TC3 is perfect for a lot of stuff. As were TC4, 6 and 8... The BBC should have ended up with something like TC1, TC3 and TC4...
