New Look Sky+HD Menu / Interface Refresh

Is it possible to purchase a Sky Q box and own it - last time I checked it looked like they were going down the 'permanent rental' solution?

Don't think so, apparently the principle is already in place in Germany and Italy where they own the boxes, so applying it to Sky Q makes logical sense.

Of course with the SkyHD+ boxes, there was nothing to stop you taking it to pieces and putting a bigger hard drive in it. That won't be an option with Sky Q, though that being said HD video takes up an obscene amount of hard drive space (350hrs on a 2Tb drive, supposedly) and Ultra HD recording will take even more.

I can see a 2Tb drive filling up fairly quickly when UHD becomes the norm, and when you need/want a bigger drive because you don't own the equipment you have to go back to Sky to get new equipment. Nice future little money spinner?

Plus if you have a mini-box you will need to schedule recordings for both UHD and HD versions of content in UHD, as the Mini box can't play UHD recordings (it can't output UHD nor can it downscale internally - suspect it is H264 and MPEG 2 only)

Is it even in Ofcom's interest to intervene? I doubt there is anything they can do.

Is there still a 'fit and proper' aspect to a licence?

The Andrew Marr show

I think the Midlands opt out of The Politics Show used it, but they've moved to the studio now for Sunday Politics opts.

Yes. ISTR The Politics Show opts were originally live - so being from an open plan office on a Sunday wasn't a major issue (most people weren't in), but now most regional opt-outs for Sunday Politics are recorded on a Friday I think, when the office would be much busier.

AIUI the backdrop isn't that great in the hours of darkness either.

Wasn't there a point in the early 00s when TVNZ veered much closer to being a normal PSB?

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Didn't they remove a media correspondent role not that long ago?

There may be a difference in letting a media correspondent take redundancy, and not instantly replacing them, and removing a role.

The BBC has been making DQF savings for a while now, which include reducing headcounts in certain grades. A person in a role may take redundancy, without the specific post they held being closed.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Worth noting BBC News is advertising internally for a Media Editor to 'deliver exclusive stories and cover the major developments in the world of media – from global deals, to digital advances, to the future of the BBC'.

Interesting brief, especially given it's an editor-level role which I find bemusing.

Not sure why you find basic journalism for an editor role bemusing? It sounds similar to the Home Editor, Sport Editor, Business Editor, Economics etc. editor roles. Effectively a senior correspondent responsible for breaking stories and being across their brief in detail.

Doesn't really roll of the tongue does it, and it's the sort of revamp that would probably be undone slowly over time. I see they launched a Dave style channel called Duke earlier this year, which doesn't really fit easily into a generic TVNZ brand - wouldn't be surprised if it became TVNZ3 before long.

Up until 2012 they had TVNZ6 and TVNZ7, however they were axed due to cutbacks.

Weren't they axeed when TVNZ effectively ceased to be a PSB? ISTR New Zealand is quite unusual in having no real PSB these days.

The Andrew Marr show

Marr live from the BBC's Mailbox canalside studio this morning - lovely backdrop. No idea why Midlands Today don't use this all the time.

Probably for the same reason The One Show didn't. It's in the middle of an open-plan office...

Grand Tour

I always assumed it would, the ratings on linear TV will far outweigh those who watch non-linearly

Quite. Particularly as Amazon and Netflix don't really publish ratings...

As for piracy. If you can play it over HDMI, it will be pirated. HDCP or no HDCP.

BT Sport - Launch of BT Sport Ultimate

It's actually upscaled HD - but the Leicester v Porto Youth League game is proper UHD.

I thought I spotted the timeline truck heading up the M1

That'll be OB16 - which is an HD truck that can also be coaxed into UHD.

UHD1 has had a busy few days: Wrexham v Chester in the Conference on Saturday, Man City v Chelsea in the WSL on Sunday, and providing pres facilities at Celtic v Man City last night.

Yep - OB16. Former SISLive combined uplink truck and small OB truck that Timeline bought when SIS closed their OB division. Nice little truck. If you can park it where you can cable to it AND see the right satellites it's a great solution for locations where parking is tight (as the uplink is built in - which is really unusual for a 'proper' OB truck)

BBC loses Great British Bake Off

I haven't read a good word about Love or Jay Hunt on Twitter from former employees so perhaps the pair are well suited.

Because Twitter is a really reliable medium that gives you all sides to a story... I'm always wary of 'former employees' views. The fact that they are former can often mean they have an axe to grind...

Actual former Love employee here, and no axe to grind.. Although I left after two weeks because it really was THAT bad.

I've heard not-great things about Love Production from people who worked there too, but these are not via Twitter.
