International News Presentation: Past and Present

WSB in Atlanta has done a 22 Box for a snow storm expected to leave 2" of snow. In the past they've been recorded - they ask crews from the field to send a prerecorded stare. However when it's time to go to the reporter it's Live.

So for each live they just overlay one reporter box in the pre-recorded mosaic with a live shot? If the boxes are static and flat that's a pretty straightforward (if slightly dull to set-up) re-sizer or DME job.

International News Presentation: Past and Present

Also worth pointing out that TV2 Fyn Nyhedskanalen is effectively leveraging existing production for a well resourced regional news show on TV2.

This is much more like ITV News London producing London Live I guess - in the same way that STV are in Glasgow, Edinburgh etc.

International News Presentation: Past and Present

TV2/Fyn Nyhendskanalen; TV2's news channel for the island of Funen, Denmark; 2017 -- with an unusual countdown:

So an island with a population of less than half a million can manage a news channel but London can't.

Yep - looks like TV2, which unlike DR (the BBC equivalent in Denmark), has regional news operations (DR doesn't), has expanded TV2 Fyn (the regional news operation for the Fyn region) to do 6 hours a day of rolling news. http://www.tv2fyn.dk/node/57451 Looks like this is approaching its second anniversary?

TV2 have invested heavily in Mosart automation systems for their news operations - nationally, regionallly and for their main nationwide news channel. I suspect this has allowed them opportunities to generate more output for less? Behind the scenes at TV2 Fyn for their main bulletin for TV2 is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2gFA2C14fw

SD channels - when does it become viable to replace them?

Think there are multiple things to consider here :

1. Simulcast of HD services in SD MPEG2. Once the UK has migrated to all DVB-T2, all terrestrial receivers will be able to receive HD and SD channels using H264 compression. That means there will be no SD MPEG2-only receivers, so the simulcasts can stop. As of this month all Freeview branded equipment must be Freeview HD DVB-T2 compatible. (This has been true since Jan 2016 for >32" displays) Effectively any new Freeview device sold now is Freeview HD (suspect this doesn't include old models/stock)

2. SD-only services. Some channels still only show content largely shot in SD, or have budget levels that mean SD is more appealing. (SD is still cheaper in terms of storage, distribution etc.) These will be able to use H264 compression (as the DVB-T2 SD channels currently do) which is a lot more efficient/better quality. There are still commercial reasons to broadcast in SD. Also - if you currently have an SD production and/or distribution infrastructure, the costs of upgrading to HD end-to-end are still not insignificant, particularly if you are sweating assets.

NOW TV

I'd take this with a pinch of salt. Now Sky aren't confirming this, but it's alleged that Sky are trialling NOW TV in Ireland.

Would make sense - I suspect they buy rights to the Republic for their content for satellite DTH and Sky VoD services - so may well already have OTT rights to most of the stuff ? (Sport may be an issue)

The Freeview Thread

The last time I've had to retune was when the Craft Channel was removed

Why did you need to retune, for something that had vanished ?

Some sets will retain the EPG channel entry, and as you surf through you'll get an annoying error message. Much better to remove the channel from the EPG.

Cancelled Sky sub now reduced to BBC 1 & 2 please help !

Terri posted:

Finally #chinamug thanks for your pointers : I can't access Other Channels now that my sub has lapsed. I've scoured the Sky menu but the only remaining active interface is Services - and it doesn't seem to be an option there. I'll investigate the option of getting an old Sky box further but yes the Holy Grail remains how to manually tune in... Cool

Depends on your Sky box model - but the Add Channels option is in Services. On a Sky HD PVR it is in Services->Options. You add them in 'Add Channels' and watch them in 'Other Channels' ISTR. You may not get an 'Other Channels' option until you've added some.

This might be helpful : https://elfknowsit.com/sky-channel-codes-all-you-need/

You won't be able to get the Irish PSB channels that way though - as they are pay-TV only on Sky I believe. (I don't think there is a FTV option for them in the Republic).

If you want RTÉ - then presumably you can watch via their web-based RTÉ Player, which has a watch live option I think? It will be on DTT FTA in Ireland (aka Saorview), and so any cheap DVB set top box you can get in a supermarket for a tenner or two should receive it I think via a reasonable aerial feed.

In the Republic Saorview is DVB-T (though it uses MPEG4 not MPEG2 so don't expect a basic UK Freeview SD box to work), in the North the RTÉ channels are on a DVB-T2 Freeview HD mux (though in SD)

As for Sky - what you wanted from them was a 'Freesat from Sky' card (it used to be called a 'Solus') - though that may be UK only and not available in the Republic (for the same reason the Irish PSBs aren't FTA or FTV)

(Apart from Pick TV - are there any other FTV channels these days - even in the UK?)

I think London Live is, (and only viewable on London registered post code cards?)
Similar for some of the other locals ?

Think it's FTV across the UK - but only EPG mapped to cards in the London postcode. Think you can probably add it to view via other channels if you have a FTV (or active Sky) card but are in another region. I was able to add the STV Local services that way to have a look ISTR.

Yep - much better off with a Freesat box which will give you a UK EPG, than the pain of Other Channels on a Sky box...

Amazon Fire TV and Stick

Review of the Westinghouse Fire OS Smart TV. As the article states, all three brands are badges of Tongfang Global.

Interesting. Looks like they don't offer any USB recording functionality for the OTA tuner, just live Pause. That feels like a missed opportunity - though I think that's less of a feature in the US than Europe, where it's becoming standard.

North American Affilliates/Network Set Design

Ridiculous, honestly. Quite significant expenditure (over $300,000) for a state-run school to waste on a niche industry with no presence in South Jersey. Nearby Atlantic City is in quite an impoverished state, so seeing a de-facto segregated town like Ocean City (92% White) get this allocation of resources is pretty insidious. Is there truly a need for these students to use anything other than a green screen?

Not sure I see the relevance of the location of the school to providing educational opportunities in media. TV employs people from across the nation - most people I know working in TV have relocated to get their jobs...

I do however, totally take on board the issue about it being an ethnically homogenous area. It would definitely be better for facilities like this to be shared by multiple schools, and a lot more cost-effective.

Beware - the situation is different in the UK and Ireland I believe.

RTE and TV3 aren't Free-to-Air or Free-to-View are they? So if you are in the Republic I don't think you'll get the without a subscription?

You may also find that other channels that are FTA aren't included in the FTA/FTV EPG for Ireland, even if they are in Northern Ireland (or does The Good Friday Agreement have a role in this?).

(Apart from Pick TV - are there any other FTV channels these days - even in the UK?)
