BBC NEWS CUTS

Let's not forget why these cuts are happening, which is for the most part because the government refuses to fund universal free TV licenses for the over 75s, but still insists that the BBC provides them! So this is a massive cut to the BBC by stealth, for which the government wants to blame the BBC itself.

The BBC might just survive until the mid-2020s but if the Conservatives get into government again in 2024 I think that might be the end.

The BBC are the ones choosing what to cut though, and time and time again it’s always stuff that nobody else does, whilst ringfencing populist mainstream output that everyone does

The populist mainstream stuff is what keeps the argument for universal funding in place. Making shows that nobody else makes, that few people watch, really doesn't help support the argument for everyone paying for it. Making popular entertainment and drama shows justifies the BBC's existence, and allows it to do the more niche stuff.

BBC One Record Low Rating

The Secrets She Keeps, 9pm BBC 1.When was the last time BBC 1 had an overseas produced TV drama in primetime?

Not in the spirit of the question but wasn't technically Killing Eve a BBC America only production for its first series, or at least when it was commissioned?

I don't think it was overseas produced though? Although BBC America commissioned it (I don't know what BBC Three's initial involvement was in the commissioning or acquisition process), it was made by a UK Prod Co?

BBC News nostalgia, including BBC World

Oooh that's a gem! Tim Sebastian reading the news and a BBC Prime ident! Who is the voiceover announcing the newsreaders?

I think that sounds like the late Alastair Yates, but I might be wrong.

Coronavirus - Impact on live/recorded shows

Cando posted:

The bake off and Masterchef spin offs have all rated well. Bake off 'The Professionals' is probably the only ratings disappointment but that still rates well by C4 standards.

I think the problem with that variant of Bake Off - both on BBC Two and C4 - is that it lacks the warmth and humour of the other Bake Offs. It's a lot more negative and critical - without any balancing 'niceness'.

Freeview - Spectrum Clearance and Technical changes

Josh posted:

Because COM7/8 carry BBC News, and BBC 4 in HD, they are used in our home almost as much as PSB3

I'll miss C4+1 HD, pre lock down it was an easy way to watch C4 News at 8pm, because I didn't normally get in before 7pm.

It was a surprise yesterday that COM 8 closes in just 10 days from now, I'd thought it would limp on for a few more months

Yeah, I quite liked Channel 4+1 HD because you could start watching Come Dine With me at 6pm, The Simpsons/Hollyoaks at 7/7:30pm then come 8pm it'd be primetime so you could turn over to the PSBs, basically avoiding the news.

Yes, I used to think +1 channels were pointless, but I've used C4+1 HD quite a lot, because it's HD, All 4 isn't, and I've got two PVRs both 99% full!

What platform are you using for All4?. It's gone HD on some platforms for VOD stuff.

Good Morning Britain in 2020

He didn’t say they were close to beating Breakfast.
He hasn’t said anything misleading.
Not sure why people find his tweets so difficult to read.

I wasn't responding to Piers's tweets, I was responding to the forum post here. I don't follow Piers on Twitter.

The Times’ Radio Station after “BBC News Stars”

House posted:

‘Studio 14C’ - where are these broadcasts originating? I didn’t realise the Times Radio Group had so many radio studios?

Could it be the numbering scheme is based on something like floor numbers rather than total number of studios ? (So 14C could be the third studio on the 14th floor?).

NOW TV

I know the channels on both packages have different EPG numbers. However, the underlying encoding and multicast stream may still be the same, given that there is a lot of duplication - especially in the Entertainment and Cinema channels.

Hard to tell without being able to take bitrate measurments on both packages.

I guess I'd be breaking out Wireshark if I were a BT TV subscriber...

BBC Breakfast close to being beaten yesterday according to Piers Morgan

Monday 22nd June overnights

BBC One 0600-0900 1.3m/40.1% Breakfast
BBC One 0900-1000 1.4m/29.4% BBC News

ITV 0600-0900 0.9m/27.5% Good Morning Britain
ITV 0900-1000 1.1m/23.0% Good Morning Britain with Lorraine

Breakfast had nearly 50% more audience than GMB between 0600-0900 when both were on-air?

Piers is telling porkies again.

Unless he's decided to compare GMB with Lorraine and BBC News - which were closer (though BBC One still had more than 25% more audience than ITV in that hour) - though that's not comparing with Breakfast...

I do wonder if people are justing telling him what he wants to hear at ITV Daytime, rather than him just out and out making it up...

Eurovision 2021 - Netherlands - NPO/AVROTROS/NOS

The end of this contest really was a masterclass in how not to shoot fireworks. They look bloody awful. All of the inserts that they left to the local broadcaster were really bad.

All of the direction and camera coverage inside the arena was handled by the Swedish (with Serbian heritage) director Sven Stojanovic, who had directed a number of ESCs and Melodifestivalens by this point. The production facilities were hired in (and probably Swedish)

The OB inserts from the city square and the fireworks were handled by the host broadcaster using their existing, SD, facilities.

This Morning

Why is a live show automatically better than a pre-recorded one?

It isn't, and the audiences for the BBC daytime offering from 0900-1430ish are usually higher than ITV's. (This Morning often wins a few 15 minute slots - but seldom wins its whole slot)

There are times, like now with the current Corona Virus situation, where a live daytime shows helps BBC One reflect what's happening in the country, and makes the schedule feel a bit more reactive, hence the current presence of shows like Health Check UK Live, Daily Kitchen Live, Your Money and Your Life etc. - but often pre-recorded shows do well for the audience, offer an alternative to This Morning (and are financially more sensible as they can add repeats into the mix, without them feeling too obvious...

Quote:

What about Doctors, which is offering original drama on daytime BBC1 nine months of the year? That has a massively loyal audience and is often the highest rated thing on daytime after the news. And there's no equivalent of that on ITV. That's in addition to shows like Father Brown and Shakespeare and Hathaway.

Precisely - the BBC Birmingham-produced daytime drama is a very good alternative, and a genre that ITV have kind of abandoned since the days of High Road... (The BBC daytime drama operation is a really good training ground for new talent too - directors, writers, actors all get good experience working on these shows)
