BBC.co.uk - site cutbacks & beyond

The point of closing it isn't to save money, it's so that the BBC aren't treading on the toes of other travel information sources.

Yes - though if the BBC have stopped publishing the information online and are now only broadcasting it, there may be a reduction in the contract cost, as fewer rights are being exercised. (For many broadcast deals you pay extra if you publish online content you buy.)

Eurovision 2017

The BBC has revealed the 6 songs that will compete to represent the UK in Kiev. The songs were revealed on the Ken Bruce show this morning. The usual list of X Factors cast-offs dominate the list of participants. Majority of songs have been written by Scandinavian songwriters.

Here's a link to all the songs in full:

Of the Nordic composers, one song has been co-written by ESC-winning performer Emilie De Forrest.

Good Morning Britain

He's made appearances on all of these shows because of how well he knows Trump. And also because he's possibly the only celebrity willing to support him.

Never underestimate the power of Ego either. Being invited on shows like Marr, Sunday Politics and Question Time (and to a degree Peston - though that's linked to his employer) because of his expertise (real or perceived) on a subtject gives him a sense of importance, and definitely will be an ego boost.

It's worth reminding ourselves that Piers was on a cable news channel (which don't rate amazingly, and which he was let go from - actuallly for the right reasons ISTR. He stood on principles in taking on the gun lobby...) in the US, and is on a little-watched morning show here. He was sacked by the Daily Mirror, for publishing fabricated photos too, don't forget. He's not amazingly credible in some areas...

It's not like he's David Dimbleby, Huw Edwards or Graham Norton. He's not got that level of credibility or that size of audience these days - so being invited on shows that are the leaders in what they do (rather than the also-rans he often presents) is presumably quite ego-massaging.

(Life Stories was probably the biggest thing he's done here ?)

If ITV plc takes over ITN.

At one point ITV were specifically precluded, in law, from owning ITN entirely. Is this no longer the case ? (I have a feeling it isn't)

The ban on ITV owning all of ITN was removed by the Communications Act of 2003.

Nice to know I've got my finger on the pulse Smile

Foreign drama thread (BBC4, C4's Walter Pres, Sky Arts etc)

The Tunnel has been recommissioned for it's third and final series by Sky Atlantic and Canal+.

http://www.rapidtvnews.com/2017012145866/sky-atlantic-commissions-new-original-dramas.html

Oh - was just thinking about whether there would be a third series commissioned earlier today. If you ignore comparisons to The Bridge, and watch it standalone it's pretty watchable. Clemencé Poésy is particularly good in the programme. Series 1 and Series 2 are both worth a box-set binge.

UTV rebrand

ttt posted:
Maybe it was a cock-up. Wrong versions loaded on the system. It's not as if anyone is keeping an eye on UTV, are they?

A professional playout outfit would keep the ITV and UTV playout systems logically separated. This sort of thing should not be possible.

But UTV is part of ITV plc now isn't it - just as ITV Wales is? Why would ITV plc want to waste money on a separate playout operation for UTV, when every other ITV plc region is run from common areas?

Running separate operations isn't a sign of professionalism - not making mistakes is. (Though reading this thread it's not clear at all that the ITV branding wasn't entirely intentional. UTV is really 'just another' ITV plc region now...)

BBC One HD still can't broadcast regional news in England.

To go HD, I think the BBC will probably change the way regions work, choosing a more centralised opting structure and possibly also choosing a more centralised approach to equipment. There is a project at the moment to replace ageing local radio station infrastructure with centralised systems controlled remotely from desks in local stations. There are still faders and mics etc in local studios but they're all connected to technical facilities at centralised (and backed up) locations. I wouldn't be at all surprised if a similar approach was taken to tv.

Well if VILOR for TV happens - then soft opting would be a lot cheaper and still an option Smile

Sky's Branding

Interesting. This of course comes off the back of a raft of on-air talent moving from Sky News, so I can imagine quite a few behind the camera would have gone as well.

Actually - the people I know don't work in News.

Sky's Branding

Are the Premier League costs really causing Sky to tighten their belts?

Definitely. Rumblings are that it is not a happy place to work. I know people are trying to get out.

Cancelled Sky sub now reduced to BBC 1 & 2 please help !

There are not many channels left on the sky card for Freesat customers, I think the Sony movie channel was one of them but that's now on Freeview.

It only cost £95 with Freesat.

Freesat is definitely a better bet for DSat these days. You can buy a subscription-free Freesat PVR.

A Sky+ without a subscription will NOT record, even if it has a Freesat-from-Sky card.
