BBC One HD still can't broadcast regional news in England.

Now that there is effectively a separate version of PSB3 for each ITV sub region, what are the remaining challenges to getting regional BBC 1 HD onto Freeview?

I guess therel has to be mux kit for each region producing PSB 3, so it's just a case of getting a feed of BBC 1 HD with upscaled local news inserted to that kit.

Would that require the regional studios to have a sustaining HD feed or could the regional opt switch (or mixer GPIs like the old system for digital) trigger a router at the coding and mux centre to switch the BBC one HD input to upscaled (regional) BBC One SD?

Or is the main issue BBC politics and that it couldn't be done on satellite yet?

There's nothing difficult technically, just buy more codecs, upgrade distribution and contribution to and from the English regions to HD circuits, buy some upscallers for the ERs that are still SD, and provide all the associated monitoring and 'glue' at the CCM centres. It's just a case of money, THAT's the primary problem !

Yes - and it is very difficult to justify spending money to upgrade BBC One HD to broadcast SD upscaled content (only Plymouth, Salford and London originate in HD)...

It is on the radar in the new charter period - my gut feeling is that it will happen once they decide how they are going to upgrade SD English regional centres to HD, as the approach taken for this could significantly change the distribution and backhaul requirements, and would inform how the opt-out functionality would be implemented. (Particularly if the broadcast studio output signal isn't actually created in the regional centre building...)

NOW TV

Reading on the NOW TV community forum, the 2nd gen Black streaming boxes have been converted to 50Hz. This was done during the same update to disable the developer mode to stop piracy on the devices.

Seriously? Were they showing Freeview 50Hz stuff at 60Hz before this?!

Eurovision 2017

What's also interesting is the point that NTU can't actually broadcast any footage of Julia singing, period. So they couldn't air their own production in full locally.

If that were the case Ukraine wouldn't be allowed to broadcast the show - or presumably host it. A rule of taking part in the contest is that all entries must be shown. Lebanon were going to send an entry a few years ago, but it became clear they couldn't show Israel's entry, so they were not allowed to continue with their participation.

This feels like Ukraine playing right into Russia's hands if I'm honest...

Eurovision 2017

This is unfortunate news, the Eurovision Song Contest is supposed to be above this kind of stuff. I hope a solution is found, though it's obvious that Russia's participation has been less warmly received in recent years, for many reasons. I still have some doubts that the contest will go ahead in Ukraine, but I'm sure the EBU will do all it can to ensure it does. Any standby country taking over would be the first to do so since NOS did in 1980 following a second Israeli win on the trot.

One wonders whether Russia are quite pleased at this... They will have known - surely - that their performer couldn't legally enter Ukraine...

The Nightly Show

Will Dermot still get 5 episodes? I imagine the guests would already be booked.

Guests are likely to have been booked for specific days in many cases, and Dermot will be paid regardless, so I suspect tonight's show will just be considered written off.

Guests will be apologised to and I'd expect will understand reasons, Dermot will no doubt be paid as if the show went ahead (just as crew, facilities providers etc. will be)

BBC One 1997

The rules clearly got relaxed after a few years- certainly by 2003 when the top of the pops titles had the BBC logo animating on and off letter by letter.

The TOTP animation broke the rules of the time then... They hadn't been relaxed, they just weren't enforced... These days there isn't really anyone who has that responsibility in the corporation on a day-to-day basis...

More recently than TOTP the branding guidelines were revised, allowing the blocks to animate in 3D, and for users to 'play' with the logo a bit more. I think the overall project was called 'Trinity' - but not sure many areas have exploited the opportunities that much. The "On the BBC" trails have a bit of fun I guess.

BBC One 1997

In that case though, doesn't stacked mean rotated 90 degrees? I don't recall seeing one with the letters on top of each other for years after the rebrand.

No - stacked means one above the other - not rotated.

So the stacked version of :

BBC World

would be :

BBC
World

The main thing about the [B][B][C] logo was that you weren't allowed to break up the logo.

[B]
[B]
[C]

was forbidden. You had to rotate all three blocks as a single unit, not individually.

There has been 'some' relaxation - with some degree of animation and the BBC 'trinity' branding taking place (though this doesn't seem to have been pushed anywhere near as much as was envisaged)

Dave's Bottom looks weird

The holy grail is 1080p50, but of course that's twice the bandwidth. Used increasingly pre transmission within the studio/OB truck for maximum production quality, and for upscalling to 4k

1080p50 HEVC is being used for broadcast to homes in Germany on their new DVB-T2 system, which is replacing DVB-T.
UKnews and Markymark gave kudos

All that prevents ITV from abandoning its PSB commitments is that crown jewel of being third from top on the EPG

Don't they still get 1/2 (or just under) of PSB2 as gifted spectrum too? That's got to be worth something...

Axed sky news presenter Mark Longhurst replaces Ian.

Mark Longhurst no stranger to local news with his stint before Sky on Thames News

He also presented BBC South Today for a while too ISTR, after Thames News and before Sky I think. Early-to-mid 90s?

Did anyone notice the artificial sharpness on the recent playback on this piece, or was it just me.

Not just you. I noticed it too. Not sure how they managed to do that...

BBC Oneness - idents and presentation

Look carefully at the foot of the L E S text near the beginning of the playout. Analogue tape dropout. BetaSP copy?

If it was from a CRV (Component Laser Disc) that were used for ident playout - then they suffered from drop-out too. Could well be that the CRVs were dubbed off to DigiBeta for old times sake? I presume the original CRVs were mastered from D1 - though later idents in that era could have been DigiBeta.

(D1 was used from the 80s to the early-to-mid 90s for high end graphics, then DigiBeta replaced it from the mid-90s)
