Fountain Studios To Close

I was reading the other day that the redevelopment of Fountain isn't now going ahead. The developers have fallen out or something. The building is staying for now and word is that it might be leased to someone turning it into an arena/theatre

I don't think they had planning permission to convert the site to residential accommodation... There were rumbling that it might operate as a 4-waller with an OB truck to pick up some of the shows that no longer have regular studios. However I think the costs were too high (i.e. they wanted more money than people were prepared to pay)

Foreign drama thread (BBC4, C4's Walter Pres, Sky Arts etc)

dvboy posted:
C4's favoured tactic seems to be just to show the first episode then throw the rest out on All4.

Yes, they do that often except for the Friday night slot on More4. A bit annoying as the series just on All4 aren't available through Sky.

Yes - incredibly annoying that you can only watch the More4 episode via the All4 Catch-up service on Sky. The other episodes are not available for viewing this way, and only on the website and app-based devices, which are poorer quality and a faff to view...

Eurovision 2017

That Sand video is from 22nd March, when the issue came to a head. I'm expecting more from the EBU on Monday, once Deltenre's letter gets a formal response, no such response has afaik been made.

I'm pretty sure that this mire is likely to cost Sand his position in the long run, the acceptance of the Ukrainian entry last year, which as overall supervisor he had the final say, becomes even more naive and less tenable as the days go by. Quite who'll succeed him though is difficult. Both his able deputies, Vladislav Yakovlev and Sietse Bakker have moved on.

An almighty mess.

I'd say Bjorkman will almost certainly get the gig.

I can see why people think this. Personally someone like Martin Österdahl - who Exec Produced 2013 and 2016 alongside Christer - would be a more obvious choice I'd think - if he's still interested in the gig.

If the contest is having to navigate ever-choppier political waters - I'm not sure Christer (who is very much a 'creative' Exec) would be the right choice. You probably need an experienced, political and editorially aware, Exec, with a background based in making tricky and nuanced decisions.

Not that it's relevant right now - but if Australia wins, the contest still has to be held in Europe. They would work with a local broadcaster (e.g. SVT in Sweden) but the Contest would be "hosted" by Australia. Or something.

Yes this was raised when they first competed, I believe I read they would partner with Germany.

Pretty sure this was just rumoured rather than fact.

Yes - I think caused because the SBS entry partnered with Universal Germany (i.e. a German label) for the European track release?

I don't think many people would put Sietse Bakker in the frame to Executive Produce... He's got no TV production background - and went from running a fan website to running the ESC website, to running a PR company that worked for the EBU.

He was very lucky to survive the corruption investigation that caused the resignation of one of his close press-team colleagues (who was discovered to be lobbying against certain entries), and his PR company's role was diluted more recently, with a UK company brought on-board to assume some responsibilities that previous fell to Sietse's company.

He's a huge fan of the ESC - but that doesn't qualify you to Exec it. Recent Execs (Svante, Jon Ola) have usually been execs of a successful contest - though there isn't a high turnover in the role.

Christer would be a more obvious choice, but AIUI the reality is that the other Execs at SVT on MF and the ESC have done most of the heavy lifting. Christer is very much a figurehead figure...

London Live

Too bad they still have that awful presenter, Anythony Baxter. That guy can suck the life out of any broadcast.

Ah - have to differ there. Anthony is probably one of the better aspects of London Live. HIs delivery largely avoids the cliched, autocue driven emphasis that makes so many third-rate news presenters sound so bizarre. He presents far more like a person would speak in every day life.

If Ukraine refuse to let the Russian act in, they should be stripped of the hosting duties. It's not too late is it? The only problem is who the new host would be, since last year's runner up was Australia and thus isn't an option.

I think it is far more complicated than that. Are you saying a country should change its laws because it is hosting Eurovision? If so then Azerbaijan and Russia could have had some fingers pointed at them just as much, as could many other countries, like Israel...

Ironically Ukraine DID change its laws for the 2005 contest, temporarily removing the requirement for Visas for visitors from European countries (though I think this became permanent)

This is transparently a game that Russia is playing, to make itself appear the victim. It's totally in line with the Kremlin propaganda machine... They invaded and occupied Crimea, have funded and supported hostilities in Ukraine, and now chosen a performer they knew fully would not be able to legally perform in Kiev...

To be fair Ukraine have not played this well either - though I'm not sure what else they could have done?

The EBU seem to have been grossly naive in this matter. Have we heard a peep from Jon Ola Sand?

Eurovision 2017

Well it's nearly two months notice really, but agree it's unlikely.

No - less than a month until rehearsals would be expected to start...

Try finding a venue with at least 6 weeks availability (rig, rehearse, broadcast) at this notice...

Challenge - June 2016 onwards

Looks like stretchyvision is back on Challenge Sad

They appear to now no be longer broadcasting 4:3 stuff pillarboxed but instead forcing it to fill a 16:9 frame.

It was only a month since they started pillarboxing.

If this is an SD outlet - are they not using MPEG2 header switching? (Sky HD boxes ignore this on anything but Auto mode, and I hear Sky Q boxes ignore it entirely?)

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

There is, or certainly was, a point in the BBC pension scheme, where by a certain age, if you were offered voluntary redundancy/early retirement, and didn't take it, you ended up effectively paying the BBC to work for them. You were financially better off leaving than staying... Can't remember the precise age, but it was around 55 I think.

Under those circumstances, I can see many BBC staffers (as opposed to freelancers / fixed term contract people) thinking very carefully about leaving, and absolutely understand why they may chose to go.

Operation London Bridge: the death of the Queen

There are two routes to scrolling text I believe:

1. Change the name of the station so that the display on the radio showing the station name changes (and thus appears to scroll). I think this is not really 'the done thing' in the UK (though pirate stations with RDS do it I think) - as it is distracting.

2. There is an additional function on RDS radios called Radio Text. This usually needs to be specifically selected to be viewed - and will scroll on most receivers as it carries many more than the relatively small number of characters on a display. DAB also supports this. It's usually used for 'Now Playing' type information.

The Nightly Show

Are there still colour bars on the beginning of programmes in these days of file delivery?

Yes - I believe so (they still serve a purpose, along with tone sequences) - though I need to double check the rules for parts. I think they can be delivered as separate files or one file with breaks.

However I suspect The Nightly Show is a fast turnaround edit, so won't be a file delivery, and will either be played in as-live from an edit, or played in as a line-feed to a lines-record area.
