Good Morning Britain

Whatever the decisions, they'd need to have studio space, scene docks, galleries, booths, etc. production offices, news gathering offices, competition office, dressing rooms, make up and wardrobe. I'd imagine that using studios already in place would be cheaper, though production offices may be located away from the studio space.

I suppose an alternative to the options above would be to see if they could relocate if there are any small studio facilities that are due to closed down at a similar time.

Fountain Studios are empty of equipment but not being demolished in the near future so maybe they'll end up there.

Would be odd if ITV moved in there as LWT moved out of those studios when the South Bank ones opened!

From what I hear the owners of the Fountain site want a serious lump of cash from anyone planning to run a facilities operation there.

Good Morning Britain

I guess they'll have to change the opening titles too as the programme won't be coming from ITV studios.

If they build their own temporary studios - or buy out someone elses - there would be no issue calling the new location 'ITV Studios'.

It's not like 'BBC Television Centre' which is a building.

If they'd said 'Live from the ITV Television Centre' (which was the official building name - at least at one point), 'Live from The London Studios' (which is the operating name for the studios) or 'Live from ITV's studios on the South Bank' it would be different.

You may be right - they may decide to keep 'ITV Studios' to refer to the South Bank operation, but given that most of that will be closing (they will only be making the daytime stuff there when they move back, the prestigious shows will no longer have studios on that site) the glamour may have gone anyway.

Ironically, the BBC will be able to say 'Live - from Television Centre' again relatively soon...

UK General Election

dvboy posted:
It seems from Monday it will be on three times a day, are't we lucky,

The Local/Mayoral ones don't get shown on Channel 4, possibly because it's not regional whereas on the BBC and ITV they can get round that by just having normal length regional news in areas they aren't being shown in.

C4 is still regional in advertising terms - but I expect the granularity isn't small enough. They used to operate LEMNUS (London, East and South, Midlands, North, Ulster, Scotland) areas ISTR.

However the HD (and I think +1) services don't follow this - so I suspect it is too complex (and may be difficult to implement securely)

Here's a quote from a thread https://tvforum.uk/forums/post1013182#post-1013182 about LEMNUS
Quote:
Post 1993, C4 sold and played out its own advertising, all from London, to six 'macro' regions

LEMNUS
London
East and South (Anglia, TVS, HTV, Westcountry, CI regions)
Midlands (Central)
North (Granada, YTV, Tyne Tees, English part of Border)
Ulster
Scotland (STV, Grampian, and Scottish part of Border)

The LEMNUS regions still exist to this day on C4's SD (non +1) platforms

This is why C4SD is on 104 on HD Sky boxes, not C4HD (as there are still regional variations on SD that aren't matched in HD) - so as per Ofcom rules, the SD version is on 104. (Ignoring Wales where S4C may muddle EPG numbering)

C5 used to distribute multiple versions of their channel, though not on a regional basis (the feeds could be customised I believe) but stopped around the time C5HD went FTA on DSat. As a result C5HD is now on 105 on HD Sky boxes (as the HD and SD versions supplied are equally regional, so the HD version can have the primary EPG slot on HD boxes)

HOW to record from Sky?

Cheers for that, What I meant was in a throw feed, Sky box - Cable - USB Recorder - TV. how much does one cost for Android USB boxes with HDMI inputs? Google helpful but Im not sure what a decent none over the price is. There is only a small amount of channels I wish to look at mind you. I believe most have clicked its not the programmess Im after...

Ah - I think you mean passthrough. Reality is that to record from most set top boxes you are likely to have to use a splitter anyway (because of HDCP) - so passthrough is probably less of an issue than you might think.

I've no experience of the Android boxes - they are a niche market. This one generated some interest - but it may no longer be available : http://hackaday.com/2016/01/06/android-set-top-box-lets-you-stream-and-record-via-hdmi-input/

HOW to record from Sky?

I m still complexed as to why no one has come up with USB recorder box in which you can you just plug an in a throw feed.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a throw feed?

You can get Android USB boxes with HDMI inputs (some of which have passthrough, though some require a splitter) that let you record from external HDMI sources without using a PC/Mac.

Hauppauge, Elgato and a few others do HDMI / Component / Composite USB capture boxes which will capture and internally compress to H264 or MPEG2 for use with a PC or Mac. If you just want Freeview or Freesat channels (and nothing with encryption) then cheap DVB-T/T2 and DVB-S/S2 USB capture solutions are available (DVB-T/T2 are cheaper and easier to integrate into an existing set-up - as DVB-S/S2 LNB feeds can be trickier to route) Some of these have HDMI passthrough (with no latency to speak of) Hauppauge make one device which is a standalone recorder that records to uSD cards ISTR.

Biggest issue is HDCP copyright protection on the HDMI outputs of many set top boxes (including Sky), but this isn't a total deal-breaker. (As others have pointed out earlier in this thread)

Eurovision 2017

1st rehearsals have begun today.

Today:
- Sweden
- Georgia
- Australia
- Albania
- Belgium
- Montenegro
- Finland
- Azerbaijan
- Portugal

Presumably these are first rehearsals with the performers themselves?

In recent years there are rehearsals of every song that take place before this, with local stand-ins who mimic the staging and mime to track? (This is to allow the TV rehearsals to take place before the performers arrive from each country, and thus saving significant amounts of money in terms of hotel rooms and other expenses incurred when travelling, whilst allowing the creative teams more rehearsal time)

The new NEW Central West and BBC Midlands thread

I think maybe that the larger gap to the left of the time-lapse will be a space for a large screen of some form rather than a view into the newsroom.

My first thought was that it was for a weather / stand-up screen position.

The Nightly Show

Quote:
"The stuff Gordon Ramsay did with John Legend has got such global appeal because they're such big stars in America," says Frances Taylor.

In one segment, which was a hit, Legend was seen at a piano, singing some of the foul-mouthed chef's most famous TV insults.

"If you've got names like that then people all round the world will recognise them, and that means that it probably will go viral, and that's the whole point of shows like this ," Taylor adds.

"Bradley Walsh interviewing Louise Redknapp didn't have quite the same worldwide appeal."

The whole point of shows like this is to get everyone else watching but people in the UK? What's the point of having a UK chat show if we can't have our own spin on it and our own culture? From reading this, it's like we might as well just put James Corden's show on every night.

Yep - that view seemed to come from a particularly 'viral' and 'online' world. Indeed f you can monetise those clips effectively, then yes - they do become the point, and if they generate 'guest booking buzz' (i.e. you get A-listers because it will raise their profile significantly) that may also be useful.

However, currently, the core aim of the show is to give ITV eyeballs on adverts... Doesn't matter how many people outside the UK share a viral of Gordon Ramsay, if the advertisers in the UK don't get their numbers, the show won't be seen as a major success.

The other big issue the show had was that it wasn't seen as a 'must be on this show' appointment for visiting talent. A-listers (or their PRs) coming to the UK know that Norton is the most popular, late evening chat show in the UK, and that The One Show is the highest rated show you can currently appear on. Pretty much everyone else is playing catch-up.

Increase in U.K. children's productions?

I do think the reality of todays market means this needs to go beyond the PSBs - it's arguably more important that the commercial childrens channels are producing UK content than the main five terrestrials, and just a couple of series a year would actually significantly increase the commercial childrens content. Based on the figures above a target of an hour a week for ITV and C5 isn't unreasonable at all.

I think it's important that high quality content for kids should be on FTA/FTV channels, and not behind a pay wall, though.
