BBC News Channel Presentation - 21/03/16 onwards

Aren't LG pushing their "wallpaper" OLEDs for digital signage? Maybe they're also destined to be on screen?

Yes - be interesting to see how bright OLEDs go.

NOW TV

You're not looking at fast action sports then. The frame rate hobbling kills the experience.

Yep - sport, news and entertainment shows look terrible when reduced from 50Hz to 25p. Drama and movies - and most documentaries - are shot 25Hz, so look fine at 25p.

iPlayer added 720/50p to most (but not all) platforms a couple of years ago. Makes a big difference to stuff shot 50Hz native.

ITV abandons the South Bank

Strictly It Takes Two will be fine, as this runs from September until December 2017.

Yes - but presumably will also run Sep '18-Dec '18 too...

It just seems a bit strange to me that Studio TC3 is being used by ITV for their daytime shows. When you look at Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and This Morning, none of these use studio space of more than 3,000 Sq Ft and with no audience. Only Loose Women have an audience of around 120 at most and generally do not need a 8,000 Sq Ft studio space for their lunchtime show.

TC3 is around 6,300 ft2. It could be they want to leave Loose Women and This Morning as standing sets as they could be in the same studio without reset time?

Quote:

It seems obvious that Studio 2 is perfect for Loose Women. It is nearly the same size as Studio 3 in the London Studios, slightly bigger. Moving Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and This Morning all into Television Centre seems too much.

TC2 is 2,400 ft2. That's a bit tight for an audience of 120...

Quote:

I feel Good Morning Britain and Lorraine will be housed in the newly redeveloped White City building, where the One Show used to be broadcast from before their transfer to New Broadcasting House. This Morning and Loose Women could easily be based in Television Centre.

Wrong building... The One Show was in a different building, which the BBC still occupy on the site. (ITV have leased space in White City, not the Broadcast Centre/Energy Centre)

ITV abandons the South Bank

How many studios are at Riverside? Is it just one that is reopening? Studio 1, 6.500 Sq Ft. Is that all they are opening? On their website they don't mention any others. They say studios.

It is vague, and that's changed.

It says that there will be three studios, 1 large, 1 small and 1 medium but that Riverside TV will be operating Studio 1. So either someone else will run the other two or they aren't dedicated TV studios. I suspect that they'll be used for live shows as well

Riverside has always, historically, been a bit confusing. They aren't able to run the site purely as a TV operation, as the planning permission (I think) also requires some commitment to arts production - so the studio spaces are also used as performance spaces. As a result it doesn't make sense to have dedicated galleries for each one.

ITV abandons the South Bank

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't ITV rent the premises that This Morning uses from a third party? If so, why do This Morning have to relocate? Or was this purchased along with TLS site a few years ago?

Think ITV own the studio space. The This Morning gallery is elsewhere on the site (they only upgraded the studio, not their former gallery and now use the former Daybreak HD gallery facilities I believe)

BBC News Channel Presentation - 21/03/16 onwards

Are the BBC going to fix (replace) the screen in the main studio, it has screen burn. The one with the newsroom behind it on the right.

I'm pretty sure they're aware of things like this, they annoy them just as much, but it's finding budget to replace these things thats more often the hold up. Screens like that aren't cheap and have lasted considerably well if you think they've been on permanently now for over 4 years solid.

They're not hugely expensive these days. I've just bought some destined for the production stack in a UHD OB truck, 600 quid for 40 inch models. You'd want something better than that for 'in vision' ( ironically!) with easy facilities to alter the colour balance, and be nice and bright, and easy to match with others, so perhaps 3k ?

Real problem is finding suitable replacements for in-vision plasmas. LCDs are still dodgy off-axis... (Think the screen in question is an LCD - but the real issue is finding a decent plasma replacement)

ITV abandons the South Bank

The Times are reporting that ITV Daytime are leasing TCs 2 and 3 from BBC Studioworks for ITV Daytime (alongside using TC1 for recording Jonathan Ross).

The Times also reports that they are leasing space for the ITV Daytime production teams in Stanhope's WestWorks site - which is the re-developed BBC White City One (formerly just known as White City) building. It's just up Wood Lane from TV Centre.

AIUI TC2 didn't have a dedicated gallery in the initial TVC re-opening plans - so it may well be TC2 and TC3 will share a gallery for iTV Daytime shows - which makes a huge amount of sense IF they can organise schedules to suit.

This is one report I've read in the Times - though the TC2 rumours had been rumbling for a while.

Sky News presentation - New studio onwards

I take it Channel 4 use a different feed? I wonder what the person was doing (or trying to do) when the wrong button was pressed, something to do with cameras if Sky were controlling them?

I don't think anyone noticed, they were more interested in this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJkCejUl2PE

I'd expect the studio used at Sky in Osterley to have been made available to both Sky News and Channel Four - so both operations would have got a feed of the studio to do with what they wished.

Whether Sky News then routed it through a gallery of their own (to add the ticker) or whether it was routed straight to Sky News presentation (with pres adding the ticker) I can't say.

I suspect both C4 and Sky had the same feed from the studio making the show - you wouldn't expect C4 to be fed the output of a downstream Sky News gallery.

Channel 5 general discussion

dbl posted:
Well Ch5 HD is already on 105 on my Sky HD box

Yes - but only since they ditched the regional advertising on their SD service. You can only put the HD variant of your channel in the prime EPG slot if it is identical to the SD service it replaces.

This is why BBC One SD is on 101 in England, but BBC One HD is on 101 in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. (As in England BBC One HD doesn't carry regional variations, but there are national versions), whilst the reverse is true for BBC Two HD.

Yes, the problem was that TC8 was located on the far side of the complex. TC1, TC2 and TC3 are all said by side, and so would TC4 if they bothered to keep it. TC8 however would be far away from that area, the BBC wanted to locate themselves in one small area of the complex and leave the rest to Stanhope.

Yes - and the South Hall was a nice simple 'break line' - with TC4 the wrong side of it...

Quote:

If TC8 had been retained, it would mean TC1, TC2 and TC3 all based in one area, with TC8 left on its own on the other side of the complex. That is why they did not retain it.

Yes - though there were suggestions at one point it could have been used as a 4-waller and exhibition space.

It must be slightly weird for him to be doing the UK only opt-outs. But he did pronounce Nicola Sturgeon without any hesitation.

Wouldn't have thought Nicola Sturgeon was a tricky name to pronounce. Her christian name is pretty normal and her surname is a widely known type of fish. If you read it as it is written you won't have any problems.

Broadcasting House, Salford Quays & TVC

The three studios at Television Centre were purpose built for television. Studio TC2 and TC3 both opened in 1960 when the Television Centre became fully operational. The largest studio TC1 opened in 1964. It is such a shame that the remaining studios had to be knocked down. There was hope that TC4 could have remained, sadly money played an important part and TC4 was no more along with the remaining studios.

There was also a hope that TC8 (very popular with sit coms) could have been retained. But that also wasn't to be.
