the Digital Production Partnership guidelines for completed programmes being delivered by file to all the major UK broadcasters says that a clock or slate can be used:
Quote:
Where a moving clock is used, it must provide a clear countdown of at least 7 seconds, including a hand moving in 1 sec steps (i.e. not smooth motion) around a circular clock face. Clocks with only digital countdown are not acceptable.

Obviously this doesn't apply to VT inserts, but I'd imagine post production houses would just apply the same rule to everything they churn out.

Most shows DO apply that rule to inserts if they use clocks. The use of sweeping second hands is the work of the devil - if you've ever tried cueing one...

Clocks are very useful if you need to mark an in on an ingested server clip in a hurry. Find the -5" point exactly (easy with a non-sweep clock), stripe it as 09.59.55.00 and you have a perfect 10:00:00:00 in point available... Much, much more useful than a slate.

Watchdog was prerecorded? News to me Surprised

It was pre-recorded when it was in the tent, but only earlier that day (I think).

I didn't know that.

It was pre-recorded, but the day before, not on-the-day.

Main BBC News bulletin voiceovers

It's a bit 'pompous voice of God' - so was dropped a LONG time ago. Back in the day the One/Six/Nine bulletins were linked into with a clock and 'It's Nine O'Clock' type announcement without naming presenters, and then a separate 'News' voice over announced who was presenting that bulletin as part of the opening sequence.

That format doesn't really work if you need to name check the regional presenters. I think it's harking back to a byegone era...

Even playing off server you still might get clips incorrect, as the director might not see the playlist or, when they have several playout streams on a monitor wall, they need to know which one is the right one - which a VT clock would have helped ID.

Also - playing out from server doesn't mean you are running a playlist. The server op may just be manually cueing by clip ID. If you aren't running with automation it would be unusual for a director to see a playlist - though many galleries will have the server output WITH status (i.e. timecode, duration left, clip name, notes etc.) superimposed in their stack so the director and PA/Script Sup can see more information.

I thought VT clocks for inserts were a relic of the days of tape having to get up to speed. If everything is a file on a playout system I can't see any need for the clock other than to aid identification of the material.

Nope - unless you are fully automated and using clip codes, clocks or slates (less ideal if working quickly) are still a vital tool for identifiying inserts (even if delivered as files) - particularly if you are updating inserts. The advantage of a clock is that it makes it a LOT quicker to correctly mark ins and outs than a slate. You don't run from the clock usually (you run from first frame) - but it is there as pre-vision before the in-point set on the server to confirm to the server op that they know which clip is which.

Sky News presentation - New studio onwards

Are there ever two ways between the gallery and presenter on air? They occasionally happen over here during morning cable shows (I know Morning Joe does it regularly) when the presenter "makes" who ever is talking in their IFB say it on air. I've noticed a few occasions where during Sunrise on the weekends they make comments of producers ridiculing them (this weekend was Stephen Dixon's shoes).

Unheard of in the UK News industry. Loudspeaker talkback - if present - is usually inhibited by transmission lights (to avoid it being heard on-air) and a producer's or director's mic being present on the sound desk is equally unheard of.

What does happen, occasionally, is a one-sided conversation with the gallery - where you only hear the presenter...

Wouldn't be unusual, during the Nicky Campbell era it came from the production office rather than a studio.

Wasn't the 'production office' basically a studio set though?

For the bulk of that era in White City, and for a shorter period the Media Centre - no - it was the office - and live.

There was one series where a space in The Media Centre was converted into a kind of studio, which was the first series after Anne Robinson's return, and that was pre-recorded. It then returned to a real studio (first at TV Centre, then The Hospital), presented live by Anne Robinson.

MHP and MHP "Redux" discussion

Any decent media player like VLC will also play the Opus files. No version of Windows has Opus file support, you have to "add" it for Media Player (something like K-Lite Codec Pack for example).

Think LAVFilters are a better bet these days.

The 'WIN HOLIDAY HOME & £30K" caption illustrates, in a nutshell, why GMB can't compete with Breakfast. Still treating their audience as a cash cow...

Slightly awkward with that competition sitting above that message on the ticker...

Yep. Having it over a news presenter doesn't exactly add credibility...

Al Jazeera to close?

AlexS posted:
I trust RT more than I trust All Jazeera frankly...

If you are talking about Al Jazeera English - then wow. Just wow.

AJE is pretty journalistically sound - with a strong rosta of trustworthy presenters, producers, reporters etc.

RT? Definitely not. Working there is close to writing a resignation letter for your career in TV News.
