Channel 4 News

JAS84 posted:
Why don't they use the 5.30pm timeslot in this situation? I get that they'd want to avoid clashing with the BBC and ITV news programmes, but putting it on More4 probably means much lower than usual ratings.

People not home from work? Target audience more likely to channel flip at 1900 than watch at 1730 before they'd realised it had moved?

International News Presentation: Past and Present

Yep - Tagesschau has it, and the BBC used some nice jib/crane tracking tech to drive a Viz engine which was projected but generated perspective based on camera position on its referendum coverage.

London 2017 World Athletics

Why was he so poor doing that when he'd done Live & Kicking previously? Too long not doing live telly?

There's a huge difference between presenting structured, reasonably scripted live kids TV and presenting much more free-flowing, frequently changing sport. Both are skilled jobs, and some skills will transfer, but being good at one doesn't automatically make you good at another.

There are some people who made the leap very successfully - like Jake Humphrey - but just because Jake was good at both doesn't mean everyone will be.

Inconsistencies with re-branding?

LOTSW was shot entirely on film wasn't it?

Well, after 1992 it was, before then it was the usual film video mix, bar the 1991 series which was entirely on video (and also the last to be made in front of an audience).

Also interesting noting the 1992-98 editions were clearly not just shot on film, but edited on film too- quite obvious with the credits with their scratches, grain and weave, often independent of the picture behind it (as video credits would be clean and static, as they were on the show from 1999 onwards). Very strange to see a scratchy, weavy optical film version of the 1990s BBC logo copyright dates.

When you see the 90s editions on Gold, it seems to be a mix of some episodes in 4:3 and some in 14:9, seems to be fairly random from one episode to the next. There's quite a lot of 90s 16mm shot shows that are in 14:9- and still go out that way presumably because that's how they are on the master tapes!

The very last series (or couple of series) were shot 25p HD ISTR - using the Thomson Viper camera?

** Yep - thought so : http://www.4rfv.co.uk/industrynews/49694/last_of_the_summer_wine_uses_viper_filmstream **

Inconsistencies with re-branding?

The main reason for the BBC logo having different drop shadow effects etc. is almost certainly a different Aston operator (or editor operating an Aston) did them, or if the drop was added in a vision mixer, the editor chose a different amount of drop to add...

Very true, but even if the editor was the same throughout the series, the likelihood of him/her selecting the same amount/direction of drop on the mixer even twice ever is remote. Particularly with the pissingly annoyingly fiddly knobs on the average GVG.

And the chance of an emem surviving (or even being in the same suite?) would be quite low I'd imagine. Can't image anyone would have saved that kind of a thing to a floppy if you had a GVG200 in the suite...

NOW TV

Makes me wonder if there's a third gen Now TV Box on the horizon for the Christmas market considering they're offering trial slots again to existing customers.

What would the innovation be in a third gen box?

Being able to record programs would be a good addition in my opinion. It's the only thing missing from the smart boxes (well apart from a Netflix app, although I realise there is no chance of that).

Do you mean record shows off-air - or record on-line streams?

New BBC corporate font: BBC Reith

Anyone else still getting the old font on the Sport site while using Google Chrome?

No - Chrome on a Mac is rendering in Reith here.

International Presentation

Yes - SVT - just like the BBC with Reith - has its own typeface - Publik. It relaunched broadcast and online output using it last year I believe.

YouTube for Android TV

What Android TV platform? Could be they are tightening the DRM requirements, or have switched codecs.

Thames strike

I wonder how HTV worked - ie did they have one 'feed' of ITV programmes then opt in with Wales or West programming, or did either region pull its own schedule together from the network.

Depends how far back you are thinking. From the launch of ITV until the early 90s, there weren't really ITV regions as we think of them (and BBC English regions) now and they didn't opt-out because there was no network or sustaining feed to opt-out of.

Each ITV franchise was an entirely separate company with its own in-house presentation and playout operation (including advertising playout). They agreed with each other to show the same shows at the same times in some cases (particularly shows like Corrie) so Granada made the feed of Corrie available to all the other ITV franchises so they could show it at that time (Rather than sending a tape to every station)

So HTV would simply have had playout areas for HTV Wales and HTV West (and possibly multiple splits if they ran advertising sub-regions then). Whether they merged the two at some points I don't know.
