Also interesting that UK Eurosport Player on the Eurosport website (not sure about Amazon Prime) doesn't have the Eurosport 3, 4 and 5 channels - I guess because they are just 'best of' OBS streams and they are available separately within the player?
In Sweden I believe Kanal 9 (which is owned by Discovery and on all pay-TV outlets - including the DTT platform Boxer I think) is taking a lot of the main Winter Olympic events, with Eurosport Sweden taking more minor stuff. Think Kanal 12 is also taking stuff.
Watching the Eurosport 4 I can see, it seems to just be taking OBS feeds (not sure about commentary teams - but suspect world feed) and not putting any Eurosport presentation over the top other than a DOG (so no branded holding slate - just the OBS holding slate and then OBS countdown and titles)
Leaving the audience FX up in the mix was a great decision and added atmosphere - which has been strangely lacking in previous years.
Yep - Melodifestivalen could learn from that this year. The Mello mix this year has been incredibly lifeless - with close to zero audience effects in the mix (and very quiet ambience in the surrounds) for performances.
I am pleased with our song this year. The BBC are taking it more seriously which is nice, but what made my ears p**** up was when they said there'd be no LED Screens this year. What? So no elaborate backdrops? Are they getting back to basics and just focusing on the songs? Unless I've misunderstood.
Correct! Not sure if that’s the “official” reason but I’d guess it’s to stop the style over substance of recent years involving elaborate use of screens.
Yep. Oslo 2010 was the last screen-free show - and all the better for it. More interesting staging, and more intimate shots because you didn't have to shoot for a screen.
Has anyone else noticed that Neighbours seems to look a bit washed out on Channel 5? Whenever I pass by it, it almost looks like there's a grey haze over the picture. It doesn't seem to affect any other programme.
I took that as a grading decision made by the Neighbours team. The switch from 'bright and shiny 50Hz interlaced' to 'desaturated and thin 25Hz progressive film look' did it no favours..
Yep - the 99p Eurosport Player promo adverts are popping up in lots of places I browse. iOS app plays nicely with Chromecast, but streams appear to be limited to poorer quality 25p, not the nice smooth 50p of iPlayer...
(The resolution is OK and the compression isn't bad - it's just a pity the motion is compromised compared to their satellite and cable broadcasts, and compared to the BBC's streaming)
I guess people with MotionFlow or similar enabled on their tellies won't notice...
I noticed on the 1:30 weather today (the first I've seen on an actual telly) that the map includes details like roads, nice touch
But how does that enhance the weather forecast?
They help people place themselves on maps - particularly regional ones where coastline is less helpful. I know exactly where I live on a map if I see the motorway overlaid.
The weather maps from the early 00s also showed the same part of Europe - if you were watching in full widescreen. Less on 14:9 and hardly any in 4:3.
Yes, when the first 16:9 forecasts started they had to put something down the right hand side of the screen!
Plus they've usually included Benelux countries - I've assumed because the BBC provide BBC One and BBC Two to them officially. (BBC UK and EIRE rights and certain freelance contract agreements for BBC One and Two TX used to include - and may still include - a 'cable supplement' to cover this)
The odd morning I happen to be awake and up for a breakfast, and I noticed BBC Breakfast ended quite abruptly for Winterwatch. Is this a new regular thing? If it is, it’s a bit dull to leave without a goodbye.
Do you mean Countryfile : Winter Diaries? If so - if the Breakfast presenters handed directly to it rather than the show ending with a full closing sequence, then that's not unheard of. ISTR that Breakfast handed directly to Rip Off Britain Live (though that was a live show) when that followed them.
I do hope that both programmes get a new set sometime soon. I know the studio is an odd shape, I know the ceiling/lighting grid are low but to me the set itself is really very bland and has been since it was installed. It's not a very natural fit for the curved sofa either, the angles and spacing between the screens always look a bit odd to me.
It'd be nice to see something curved if it's possible in that space - I think it would fit the sofa better and it's more in keeping with recent regional sets. There seems to be a lot of wasted space at the opposite end to the main sofa area as well, where there are currently just lighting boxes.
Indeed, the BBC Spotlight studio is a perfect example of a well laid out studio in a small space.
Eh? The Spotlight studio in Plymouth, like Southampton, is not a small space. It was built in the era when the BBC thought they could make networks shows like 'Question Time' in the English regions. (The idea was that local news would come from the presentation studios that English regions also had back in the day). Spotlight's studio was built as a proper studio - with a full height lighting grid etc.
Spotlight in Plymouth and South Today in Southampton both have much larger studios than most other English regions, including North West Tonight/Breakfast, which these days are usually in converted office space (like Breakfast/NWT are)
(AIUI the Spotlight studio is roughly similar in floor area to Southampton - which is 1900 ft2 or around 180m2.)
Quote:
I believe its the same size at NWT/Breakfast studio but it feels more organised/airy, where as the NWT//Breakfast studio is odd shaped, disorganised and therefore doesn't allow for decent angles.
What gives you the idea they are similar sizes? Seriously - they aren't.
The Breakfast/NWT studio is a lot smaller, and a very awkward shape.

It’s very subtle but it’s clearly shoe horned in promote Three and it’s not editorial driven. It my view it’s cleary a breach. At the same time I don’t care.
If you think that's subtle - I'd hate to see what looked like heavy handed
