TV Breakdown Appreciation Thread

I'm guessing the "BBC1" test card at the end was generated by the cable company.

Yes. If they were rebroadcasting off-air UHF BBC One and BBC Two received from the UK then when BBC One and Two closed down, they actually stopped radiating any signal, and the transmitters effectively shut down. I guess the continental cable companies detected the loss of signal and (automatically?) switched to a test signal generated locally.

Channel Television

I think nowadays there is a fibre connection so they work like any other ITV region. Previous to takeover they got a dirty feed of Meridian from Chiswick via fibre which they opted out of, then sent their output back to Arqiva for DSat uplink.

I think they still do use a dirty feed of Meridian (South) fed to them via fibre, and locally playout their pres and the local ads. Their operation is very similar to a mainland BBC English region. Probably too expensive (even as an ITV internal cost) to have their opting and pres done in Chiswick). They return their output back to the mainland, and mux coding and D-Sat uplink is centralised with the other ITV regions. Fremont Point PSB 2 is fed from the same mux farm as the other Southern Britain transmitters

They don't use a dirty feed from Meridian anymore.

This is because when they previously opted out of the network for regional programmes and showed the network programme at another time (e.g. late at night), the end credits included the ECP and voiceover for the original network transmission, which must have been a bit confusing for Channel viewers!

Now when they show network programmes at other times, the end credits are clean (as with Wales and Border Scottish).

If these are pre-recorded shows, then wouldn't they be available as files now shows are delivered file-based rather than tape-based?

You wouldn't have to record them from a dirty-feed for timeshifting, you'd just need to source a copy of the DPP AS11 delivery file (or an SD downconversion) for later playout surely?

If they are live shows - that's different.

I'm not saying that Channel haven't switched to the same model as other ITV plc regions, just that the lack of ECPs doesn't mean they definitely have.

On the subject of Channel, I understand that after they switched to being fed from Rowridge (TVS), they maintained a feed from Stockland Hill (TSW) to use as a backup. I presume this gave them the option of opting out of TVS’s local output if they preferred TSW’s offering, yet it appears they rarely, if ever, did so. I wonder why?

I'm guessing the TVS feed was usually higher quality, so they only used the TSW feed when the quality of the TVS feed dropped. I don't think both were deemed equal quality, so I doubt the IBA would have wanted them to mix-and-match?

BFBS. A question

There is also a Conservative Party PPB right at the end of one of the You Tube clips, which is interesting (why PPBs were broadcast ?)

I guess members of the armed forces and their families serving abroad are able to vote, so are offered the same PPB/PEBs as the rest of the UK (though goodness only knows how devolved that is now...)

This Morning

TLS tried to call their Southbank Studios 'The London Television Centre' but it never really stuck within the industry. They were always 'TLS' or 'LWT'.

Officially, the building is called "London Television Centre"

The London Studios is the name of the company which operated from there.

Yes - but nobody ever called it that in the industry. If you worked in studio production and were working in a studio you referred to the building as " TLS" (or LWT before that)

If someone was working in an office on a production, they'd simply say "I'm working on a show at ITV" or "LWT" and then clarify with Southbank if needed. I don't know a single producer, director, camera op, sound sup or LD who ever used 'London Television Centre' to describe the place in normal conversation.

Whether it's "still the BBC Television Centre" to you is one thing, but actually - it isn't.

I got the impression that to most who worked there it was just The Television Centre.

No - it was variously TV Centre, TC, TVC, Telly Centre, 'The Centre' etc. Not sure many people who worked there called it 'The Television Centre' - it used not to have a definite article other than when described as 'The Centre' (which was usually what OBs called it in my experience)

Quote:

If they were claiming it as "ITV Television Centre" there may be some room for complaint, but that name is already in use in Leeds.

Although there are lots of BBC Broadcasting Houses around the country, I guess.

Yes - there are quite a few BBC Broadcasting Houses, a couple of New Broadcasting Houses and some BBC Broadcast Centres AIUI.

Changes to BBC Parliament & Political Programming

Really liking the new Politics Live set. Feels a lot more spacious, crisper and cleaner. I don't find the number of people around the desk particularly cramped.

Nice graphics package which feels clean and crisp too.

My only issue with the design is the tickering BBC politics live in the LED walls only really works for me on the wide. In the two-shots it is being shot off-axis and thus looks skewiff..

Changes to BBC Parliament & Political Programming

Or wouldn’t they just switch to the News Channel? That seems most cost effective and easiest option.

Why would Marr be treated any differently to any other BBC One OB programme that falls off air?

Because Marr is made differently. Most OB shows are self-contained OBs with everything on-site (graphics, VT inserts etc.).

Marr - and most news / politics OB-based shows - don't work like this. Instead the OB is a minimal, low-cost, cameras-only solution and works into a remote gallery (normally the main gallery used when the show is in a studio) and the gallery plays in graphics, VT inserts etc. rather than the OB. This means it is far easier to provide a 'backup' option - and may be used to justify not putting in place as resilient an OB solution (backup power, backup transmission paths etc.) than might be expected (though as Marr is outside BBC One peak time the resilience requirements are reduced AIUI) All it needs is a local (or resilient remote) presenter to remain available to the gallery. The question is more 'why not'?

The BBC guidelines do also stipulate that where an OB is a source into a studio show, the studio should be able to sustain in the case that the OB is lost. Whether an OB-based Marr falls into this ? Up for discussion.

Jeremy leaves Points of View

It already looked cheap during Vine's era when he sat at a CSO.

When was it shot CSO? I don't recall Jeremy ever presenting the show in that way. It was always PSC links around the Broadcast Centre or New Broadcasting House whenever I saw it. I don't think I ever saw Jeremy presenting with a keyed-in background?

Changes to BBC Parliament & Political Programming

For the regional political programmes will the Andrew Marr team be responsible for opting London and the Breakfast team for North West or do regions either have really long shifts on a Sunday or split it into two?

Is there a suggestion the new show will be live, unlike the previous Sunday Politics opts, which were normally pre-recorded on a Friday? If that's the case only a minimal number of people need to come in to TX the recording.

Extra TV

Thanks all - looks like quality smart TV with Amazon stick is the way to go.

You may not need the Amazon Fire TV stick if the TV has the requisite Smart TV apps.

BFBS. A question

The channel line up I posted above shows they have, BFBS Extra and BFBS Sports and there's Nepal TV which I assume is a BFBS channel

BFBS Extra includes the Forces News bulletin, which is also seen on Forces TV

Schedules here: https://www.forces.net/tv/schedule?ts=1535929200&full=1

Would Nepal TV be for Gurkhas serving in the British armed forces?
