Sky News | General Discussion

Trouble is, Sky did hours and hours over a year on Ocean Rescue, but the public credit David Attenborough after an hour on BBC One.

I suspect more people in the UK saw that hour on BBC One than saw any element of Sky's Ocean Rescue campaign. Probably by a significant amount.

Shows that people forget or get lost in time

Channel Five didn't 'produce' those programmes.
They commissioned those programmes.

Big difference.

Splitting hairs though, considering the context of the point being made.

I'm not sure it is. It could entirely mean that C5 are good at commissioning shows from Indies who spot talent, not at spotting talent themselves. C5 don't produce those shows, nor did they own them for any duration longer than the licence period they agreed with the Indies.

The Late Late Gay Byrne Irish Television Thread

Isn't it the case that when TÉ (RTÉ at that point?) launched a TV service in 1961 they initially broadcast in the UK 405/50 line standard because so many people in the areas covered by the first transmitters in Ireland had already bought 405-line sets to watch the BBC (and ITV) ? Presumably these areas launched first because there were already audiences with TV sets ready and waiting to receive Irish television ?

This was an understandable move - but put it slightly at odds with what was becoming the dominant European standard (as by then 625/50 was the agreed pan-European line-standard for new services?)

It was only a year or so later that TÉ introduced 625 broadcasts - presumably to areas where TV was new and people hadn't been able to receive the BBC (and ITV) beforehand?

Did RTÉ initially run in 405/50 internally for the first year or so - or were the 405/50 transmitters always fed via (at that point optical) standards converters? (Multistandard 405/625 studio equipment was feasible at that point I believe)

AIUI RTÉ launched their 625/50 services before BBC Two launched in the UK - so 405/625 dual-standard sets were presumably not widespread at that point.

Sky - Comcast takeover complete

Jeremy Darroch outlines that Sky intends to reduce the volume of niche movies it buys and reduce it lineup of linear entertainment channels. What channels could face the axe? He has to be talking about Sky owned/part-owned channels as Sky can't exactly cut other linear channels as they operate an open EPG
https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/sky-ceo-jeremy-darroch-says-he-intends-to-stick-around-1202993815/

I think you're conflating two different issues here aren't you?

You're correct that Sky can't restrict channels from being in the EPG if they are FTA (or pay Sky to be FTV) - if they pay Sky to be in the EPG, they are in the EPG (subject to slots being available)

However that doesn't mean Pay TV channels can demand to be part of a Sky subscription package. Sky can absolutely decide that they no longer want to pay third party channel operators for their channels included in Sky TV pay-TV packages. Sky are well within their rights to decide that the value added by a third party channel or channels being present in a pay-TV line-up isn't worth the money they are paying the channel operator, and can drop them.

If that channel operator wants to go FTA and be funded by advertising, or be funded via a separate bolt-on subscription (which they'd pay Sky an amount to manage) they could do that - but third party channels don't have an automatic right to be included in Sky's pay-TV line-ups.

Remember when Eurosport were dropped by Sky briefly after they failed to agree terms. This is not really different to that.

Eurovision 2019

So the Mello hosts have been announced. Good timing for Eric Saade publcity - he's got an album out I think (or at least a new single)

SDF is always fantastic - so looking forward to seeing her host.

That's a fairly decent line-up. Shame the arms race of presenters at Eurovision has infiltrated MF.

To be fair - multiple presenters is nothing new in Mello - they've had years like this since the early 00s from memory.

The X Factor 2018

Yes - even at its peak I never took much interest in the auditions stage. I do find it odd considering The Voice launches with full studio produced audition shows that they have stuck with just an empty stage in front of a screen.

Didn't X factor originally have Popstars/Pop Idol style low-key auditions?

They then radically revamped and went for huge, overblown auditions with a large audience in venues bigger than Fountain studios (so the live shows felt smaller?)

They now appear to have downscaled the auditions again?

I think the problem with the big, overblown, auditions on X factor was that it gave the lie to 'just turn up and you could sing in front of the judges' - as there were obviously pre-auditions and backing tracks (I think)

The Voice doesn't have the same 'lots of people queuing in a regional location' conceit that X factor does' and doesn't pretend that it's not a heavily produced show from the start...

International News Presentation: Past and Present

Local morning news for the Spanish capital from TeleMadrid, 2017:

Hmmm....that theme music sounds suspiciously like TV Avsien in Denmark.

It could be the case the DR have licenced it for other broadcasters to use. It' certainly not the first time a broadcaster has used themes from other broadcasters.

Or it could be that DR bought the music from a third party, and haven't licensed it exclusively, globally?

Invisdot Packet Structure

Thanks Noggin.
You're correct Axon does appear to insert the Invisdot data "somewhere" within the the Ancillary data using Operational Practice-47.
I was hoping I could find specifically what data it was carrying and where. It looks like ITV specify it on line 15 but the AXON manual link that you attached implies you can put it on any line you like.
At this stage I'm only interested in knowing which bit or bits change as its turned on or off (although it'd be nice to know if it carries any other flags too). With a Tektronix Scope, an Axon card and on an ITV job I'm sure I could figure it out in a few minutes. Unfortunately I have neither at my disposal.

Looks like it might be carried in Packet 31 of a WST stream?

Top Gear

I wonder if the BBC will go back grovelling, or has that ship sailed now?

I'm not sure that the situation has changed. Clarkson physically assaulted a producer. Time doesn't change that... BBC absolutely shouldn't be revisiting Clarkson on that show - and grovelling would be horrific.

Invisdot Packet Structure

Does anyone have to hand the ANC packet structure for Invisodt. Or know where I can obtain?

http://dpp-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/specs/itv/ProgrammeDeliverySpecificationLiveITV.pdf

Quote:

Out of Vision Cue Dots (Mandated Requirement)
The use of Out of Vision Cue Dots on all live programmes supplied to ITV is now a mandatory requirement. The Out of Vision Cue Dot triggers should be carried within the VANC as OP47 data packets on line 15 (578) using only ITV approved equipment.

OP47 appears to be a standard for carrying teletext/subtitles in VANC? I guess Invisidots are part of this?

https://downloads.axon.tv/downloads/1378106/AN2012-11%20Cue%20encoding%20HSI21.pdf Seems to suggest that teletext packet 31 might be used? But this is a very brief skim reading.
http://www.microvideo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Data-Management-in-Broadcast.pdf

So it looks like Invisidots may well be carried in a form of a teletext data stream carried in VANC? (OP47 being the teletext-in-VANC standard?)

I have no idea if Invisidot is proprietary or standardised? I've seen reference to an Invisidot 'heart beat' so there may be a requirement to send 'I'm still here' type data to confirm the invisidot link is still valid?

Good Morning Britain

Scotland did polarised politics long before the rest of the UK had its Brexit debate, and I imagine many people have complained on a constant basis about bias when they've had absolutely no foundation to do so, so you have to ensure you absolutely know what you're talking about before you crash into a Scottish political debate. In this instance, I'm surprised they only got one complaint, because part of that side of the debate is convinced the entire media is out to get them.

That may say something about GMB's current ratings...
