The X Factor 2018

Was it a mic effect for one of the performances just not switched off? Or a proper fault?

Proper fault. Major audio distortion.

Channel 4 headquarters in Leeds

Jon posted:

Totally agree with you. If Channel 4 are being serious about being "4 the UK" they should have some sort of base/hub in each region.

I knew they wouldn't choose Belfast as we're at a disadvantage geographically for a start but it's their loss. Hopefully we'll get more films and tv shows similar to Game Of Thrones coming to us instead.

What would they do in these hubs? Channel Four make no programmes, they are a commissioning operation, and as such have a small workforce of around 800 people. You can only split an operation so far before it ceases to be viable.

Bristol is fairly near to Cardiff and also is better in terms of the South West of England. Belfast might be an ideal location for show but it’s a bit isolated. In terms of spread of locations I think they’ve got it about right.

Yep - but that hasn't really answered my question ? Of the 800-ish people employed by C4, a large chunk of them will be admin, advertising sales, compliance and corporate types - not core programme commissioners and execs.

I'm not sure I see how a split across Nations and English regions happens if it is going to take impact on-screen commissioning teams?

https://www.channel4.com/commissioning/4producers gives you an idea of the groups of commissioning teams, and they aren't huge teams (fewer than 20 people max in each genre team - some as small as 3 people)

Think JamesM was referring to it not being an English-speaking country , which it obviously isn't, despite the proficiency of its natives at English.

Yep - I know - but the sentence described the broadcaster as not speaking English... To be honest I wouldn't describe any of the Nordic nations as a non-English-speaking country... In Finland kids now start English language lessons in their first year of school - aged 7.

Think it was clear what he meant though.

Yep - but I can't think of a worse way of putting it Smile

26th Anniversary of the biggest shake up in ITV

That was just the TV-am news. When the announcement was made that TV-am had lost their franchise, they closed their news service, and for a one off fee, Sky News provided the news bulletins and also some reporters.

No - I don't mean the news outsourcing contract that Sky had with TVam. There was a deal between BSB/BSkyB and Frost ISTR.

Doing a bit of digging it appears that an edit of the TVam 'Frost on Sunday' show was broadcast on BSB Now. I though this continued with Sky - but I think I may be wrong.

When Frost moved to the BBC he brokered a deal that allowed him to sell the show to Sky, who repeated it on Sky News.

The US TV industry does love high chairs doesn't it?

It's not like high chairs haven't been seen in the UK.

Indeed - but they are normally used for secondary areas - and aren't anywhere near as widespread as the US. They are almost always bar stools rather than high chairs too. (The Channel 5 example is a particularly terrible example of staging - who would ever sit like that (needs a table to anchor them) ? The This Morning example is very 'breakfast bar' and works in that vernacular.)

I've hardly ever seen tall directors chairs in the UK - they are (or were) common in the US.

The chairs on Kelly and Ryan are particulary bizarre - like high swivel arm-chairs.
is good example.

London Live

Playout is provided by Comux, paid for by the local television stations.
The license fee money came to the stations by forcing the BBC to buy raw footage/news packages from the locals.

Comux doesn't playout all the local channels ISTR - but I think it does handle distribution (coding and mux etc.) for all of them, including those it does't play out.

https://www.live-production.tv/news/products/london-live-selects-ericsson-broadcast-services-london-dedicated-tv-channel.html

Ericsson, now rebranded back to Red Bee in the UK, handle London Live's Playout. (The same company handles BBC, ITV, C4, UKTV etc. channels)

http://www.comux.co.uk has a list of the channels they handle. I don't know if STV outsourced STV2 to Comux, or if they have only recently assumed responsibility for the Scottish services since they moved to be 'That's' channels.
London Lite and Steve in Pudsey gave kudos

As I said in a thread elsewhere, historically there's only the BBC, RTE and SVT who genuinely try to make an effort to innovate and only one of those three broadcasters are going to deliver a win soon (Clue: they don't speak English!)

Umm - I've yet to meet a Swede who doesn't speak near-perfect English... I doubt you'll find anyone at SVT who doesn't...

26th Anniversary of the biggest shake up in ITV

Frost on Sunday ended in summer 92, it never come back after the summer holls expect for one of speical 28th Dec? Then bbc started screening the series in jan 1993.

Frost only worked 30 to 40 weeks a year on tv am. Other speical included tvam reports, Anne dimond on Sundays etc.

Wasn't there a BSB tie-up at some point too, which also then included BSkyB?

Eurovision 2019

*sigh*

You keep saying that only BBC, RTE & SVT have made innovative productions however you’ve happily ignored the two most innovative productions of their time, 1996 and 2010, both by NRK. The 1996 production in particular set the standard for later years. NRK introduced virtual reality, a massive arena and most importantly humour into the script. The 2010 production was equally streets ahead of anything we’d seen at that point.

I’d also go so far as to highlight 2014 in Copenhagen. Putting aside the financial mismanagement DR put on a visually spectacular show that was truly excellent to watch.

I'd second that re: NRK and - to a degree - DR. ISTR that DR also introduced CuePilot timecode slaved, automatic vision mixing - arguably one of the biggest innovations to hit Eurovision in production terms in recent years. (2013 was the last manually vision mixed show)
